Just wanted to know what people's thoughts were on the Fat TV shows, like "biggest loser" and "OverHaul".

Now, I'm talking only from anecdotal (and advertising) position, as I can't stand these shows so much that I can't watch them (or I get angry).

I find them degrading, and whilst it's possible that they do motivate a very small percentage of the community to lose weight, I feel the main thing they serve to do is further villify those who are overweight.

Also, I hate the fact that they seem to do everything wrong, from the point of view that they drive people beyond their endurance levels, and seem to say that 'excercise is the be-all and end-all of weight loss' where us cohenites know that simply isn't true.

My jury is still out on shows like 'honey we're killing the kids', as that seems to promote lifestyle change rather than a ridiculous programme. Again, I haven't seen this one, just speaking anecdotally.

What do you all think?

Am I wrong?

I don't mind these shows and surely, as some of these shows are into their second or third series, people must know what they are putting their hands up for.

The biggest loser can be inspiring although I couldn't possibly sustain that kind of exercise.

I would love to see a Cohen's diet show with recipes, tracking someone's progress etc.

I love The Biggest Loser. It totally motivates me.

As far as this goes, Biggest Loser actually goes far beyond just exercise. They put a major focus on what they eat. Pushing yourself just beyond that endurance level is what strengthens you. They are very well monitered - they are safe. Just look at how their health is improving! Biggest Loser is not JUST about weight loss...it is about so much more.

If you don't like them, you don't have to watch them. But I think more people than you realize find them motivating.

I love the shows for the inspiration and transformation (not necessarily the content, ie the weight loss strategies). I couldn't never do that much exersice. Cohen's is the only plan that will reshape your body. In the past I have worked out 2 hours a day 7 days a week and never got the same results as on Cohens.

I guess it's a matter of opinion but I love these shows to!
Motivates and I learn like a new exersice or food dish and
the people look simply amazing at the end! Tammy:)

They have "fat tv" shows in Japan as well, but more specials than series.

Do they achieve the first and primary aim of commerical TV, "Entertainment and watchabilty", yes.

Do they achieve any educational value and help people who are overweight: In my opinion an unequivical "No"

As for motivation, I love self help books and that kind of stuff Jim Rohn, Covey, Hanna even a little Brian Tracy. But the true test of motivation is does it get you to take planned consistent action; intelligent action, over a period of time do you get up and exercise like they do on the TV, eat what they do etc. Naturally anyone can do it one day or two or even a week, but real life creeps back in, kids get sick, its raining, work is a nightmare etc.

I have tried "exercise" and it doesnt work, it doesnt work because...it doesnt work. Just have a think about how many stairs you would need to climb to lose 1KG, what about 10KG then 50KG you would need to be on that stairmaster 24*7 for a year.

My plan is to "keep active", I ride my bike, go swimming, walking I do active "activies" that are part of my lifestyle, if it raining...it's raining

My point is that as far as creating lasting weight loss that normal people can keep to these program fail do deliver a model that normal "fat" people can copy, introduce into their daily lives and achieve results.

How boring a TV program for Cohen typical daily action plan.
  • Eat yogurt and fruit breakfast
  • Eat a chicken salad for lunch that you prepared at home.
  • Eat steak and vegetable stir "fry" (dry fry) for dinner.
Other than that it is normal life, exercising if you wish or not if you wish. Only the results of Cohen are exciting, the doing is boring boring boring. It's hardly the TV stuff of making fat people run up mountains and sit in cold water until the turn blue, have leaches suck their blood, the stuff of Japanese tv shows.

Thankfully Oz versions dont have anything involving leeches. I can appreciate that these routines would be very time-consuming and plain hard work to sustain, especially in modern day society. Afterall, previous generations, and in other parts of the world, manual labour just to provide for the family on a day to day basis was a neccessity, where we are much more sedentary and used to "instant" satisfaction. Also today, we have lots of other health related issues, eg. contamination of food etc. through chemicals, and these things in themselves wreak havoc. Having said that, I do appreciate on biggest loser in particular, the trainers efforts to reach the hearts of the contestants, and get them in touch with what they are feeling and where these things originate from (like some bad experience in the past) afterall, they say knowledge is power. Lets face it, most of us recognize the impact these things have made in our lives, and are dealing with it, but there are many who have blocked things out, and their memory has even shut down (in some cases its their body's way of coping) and they are not aware of the impact. These are motivation shows for some but not others, guess its courses for horses.

LessFatty, That's the point I was trying to make.

These programmes make people think that the way to lose weight is to push your body beyond it's endurance levels. It's not, that's the way to have a heart attack.

The people on the show may well be supervised, but Joe Bloggs who tried to emulate the show isn't.

I must confess to being a Biggest Loser addict...... Interestingly, I would always watch it with icecream and snacks close by!! (before starting Cohen's).
and I think I always put on weight while I was watching a series, so I think they have had the opposite effect than desired.

But one thing I have found really helpful is to see the contestants weights..... like someone else mentioned "reverse anorexia" means I have no idea how big or small I look to others. So, when I saw ladies who were 100kg, and I thought they look huge, then I had to admit to myself that I was in fact bigger than them. So, its helped me to gain a more realistic picture of myself. There aren't many other places on TV that you get to see people who weigh over 100kg.

Now that's a bloody good point.

It is always confronting when you see a photo of yourself THIS big.

I know I have RUN from out of in front of cameras this last couple of years...

I have, too, seen other people in the street and thought, shit, s/he's HUGE, only to realise that I'm no smaller.

Takes a while for the penny to drop.

I watched Shockdoc last night and there was a lady that had a stomach that weighed about 70 kgs  and she was bed ridden....it was just terrible to see how some people live. I think if these shows are done tastefully it helps kids to see what can happen....because some of these people never get out (so we are shocked when we see someone that large) and we see advertising that shows how much weight people can loose on this or that diet, I think alot have the mind set that "eat today...diet tomorrow'' and of couse tomorrow never comes.:D

Height 5.10
SW 159 lbs :(
CW 144 lbs:cool:
GW 140 lbs:D

I saw that too..... revolting!! But I think thats probably where I was headed, cause I was finding increasingly difficult to do any exercise etc, at 117kg... I just don't know how people move at much higher weights than that. My body was giving out.

I love celebrity fit club........mostly cuz it's tv i can relate too..........and yaeh i find it motivating as well, I think if ya don't like em......don't watch em:confused: I get some good ideas and stuff from them but mostly just entertainment :p :p

I'm not saying I don't like them, and It's trite to say 'if you don't like them don't watch them'.

I wanted to discus whether people thought they were good or bad.

Am inspired by the motivation of the Biggest Loser contestants and find Overhaul educational. Combine the two shows together and there'd be a very good balance.

Totally agree with you on this one, heavenlylamb. I couldn't walk up the stairs before I started Cohens the first time (I weighed 112kgs) without being able to breathe. Years of smoking could also have helped (I quit 6 years ago but I think the damage is done). I find when my weight goes up I have a lot of trouble breathing with any movement, so when I put on weight I tend to do less. There would be no way I could keep up the levels of exercise that these people are expected to do.
Quick question.... Has anyone seen any of the contestants from the last series lately. I would be interested to see if they have kept the weight off.

I as a 16 year old, LOVE Biggest Loser - Celebrity Fit Club - Shows about Overweight people losing weight. It shows that it can happen and it shows reality. These are the only shows that show REALITY...You never see Big people on other shows....RARELY on Tv anymore..and if they're big then they have either been skinny before, or they are very VERY famous. Do you ever see overweight people on Reality Shows? Not really....and if you do theyre always off the show like the first week because theyre overweight. Biggest Loser Celeb Fit Club..ETC, are such a great inspiration for me. Actually Biggest Loser last night told my brain I need to get back on my diet, because I was slacking. I really love this show, and would love to be on it myself.

I find the transformations amazing. Australian Biggest Loser was incredibly popular here and I know a lot of people who joined the free program they had going that was in conjunction with the show. Had exercises and a meal program on it. But me personally would be far too shy to ever go on one of those shows.

I used to be a big Biggest Loser fan, and I am watching the current series, but i think that's mainly cos I have a crush on Bob :)

But I do think it's horribly unfair that they kick people off. I think the majority of these people are motivated by money, sure they spout things like "I need to get my health back, Gotta do it for my kids, blah blah blah", but deep down I reckon they're thinking about the prize money.

That is where Overhaul becomes a better show than TBL, at least the professionals stick with them for the entire 3 months, and those participants really are motivated by the health aspects of losing weight.

Personally my favourite FAT TV show is You Are What You Eat, and I hate Channel 9 for taking it off. I liked it because it showed the damage that is done to the inside of the bodies by a bad diet filled with excess fats, sugars and calories, and then how it can be reversed by a nutrient rich diet. But even saying that, I'm with ASY, I like Cohen's cos I can 'lose weight sitting on my arse'.

cheers
MrsMc
