Fat-Loss Specialist - Here if you need me

Hey everyone,

My name is Justin,

I'm a fitness professional originally from the UK but I spend my time between there and Cyprus (I work with clients in both countries).

I mainly specialize in fat-loss and body-toning, more often with women, however I started my career as instructing athletes (mainly MMA and rugby) so I've got some good experience.

If anyone needs help you can ask me anytime and I'll do what I can.

Looking forward to meeting everyone and hearing your success stories!

Justin

Hey Justin,

It is awesome to see that I might actually get some advice from someone who can tell me exercise that might help. I have only a few spots on my body that seem to love my flab. And I need exercises that will help get those areas toned. I'm going on a mild diet right now, I say mild because my doctor told me not to loss to fast or it will all come back like a boomerang. I am currently using a rowing machine. But find this is hurting my bad knee and hips. Do you have any exercises you can recommend for my abdomin lower back and lol chin. My legs are pretty toned still so but I do have a bad knee. Anyways if you can help, great!!!!!!!!

Hey, no problem!

When your doctor says you'll gain the loss back if you lose it too fast, he's thinking along the lines of if you use a crash or very low calorie diet.

In those cases you can regain weight if you have lowered and damaged your metabolism.

However, by following a decent eating plan you can lose plenty of fat and will not gain it back so don't worry too much about that.

(I have nothing against doctors, but I've found that taking exercise and diet advice from them is just as useful as asking ME what pills and medication you should take! - doctors aren't educated in exercise and nutrition)

Can you first tell me a bit more about your bad knee and hips?

Where / when do they hurt?

Is it a long-term pain or is it from an impact injury?

What movements / exercises (aside from the rower) give you pain?

Thanks

AWow, welcome!

I aspire to be a nutritionist/trainer someday. I'm switching majors in college now because of it.

Welcome to the boards! And I'm sure everyone will appreciate your knowledge. :)

Thanks for the welcome!

I've been spending most of my time in the Weight Loss with Exercise section, so you can see some tidbits I've posted about there.

If you are really passionate about helping people and changing lives you should definately do it!

AThanks for the encouragement! I'm gradually changing my life and my ideal self always sported well-toned muscle. I haven't been at it as long as most on here, but seeing the changes in my own body has already inspired me to keep going. I would love to help others realize the potential within themselves and boost one's cown confidence.

I started eating better and dropped 15 lbs, then a little over a month ago started adding exercise and I lost another 5 lbs and am gradually building muscle. I'm prepping for the p90x challenge (my uncle is in great shape and is giving me his copy because his newlywed wife has it too). But I don't want to overdo it so I'm taking it easy and I'm gonna give myself another week or 2 to prep before I try it as my regimen.

I'm going back to school in the fall. So my goal is to continue the way I am going and be actually satisfied by the time I'm back in school and maintain by keeping up my routine. I'm changing my life for the better and although sometimes my patience runs thin I understand nothing happens overnight. I want to help others reap the benefits of being healthy and living a more active lifestyle.

I'm 130lbs now, where I should be for my height (5'6"), but I'm not stopping of course. I'm pushing for well built. Not enough to scare the children but enough to feel like I truly earned it.

With the help of these forums and Jennifer Nicole Lee to motivate me I'm sure I can accomplish my goals. :)

Good for you, you seem like you have your journey well mapped-out and that'll help you get further.

As I always tell my clients, don't focus on the weight too much, its not important - the real numbers to look at are your fitness levels - your weights used and reps done!

Imporve your fitness levels every week and your body has no choice but to strip the fat and tone those muscles!

Good luck

Thanks Justin,

Didn't know if you'd actually help me, lol was hoping you would. I was hit by a car when I was about 14 years old. My one knee always acts up cause of it, Xrays didn't show a break or fracture. But I was told to stay off it for 2 weeks and had crutches. I didn't listen, so not sure if its a type of arthritis or that there is something else going on there. Maybe just a weak knee.

My hips started after I had my daughter. It feel's like they want to pop but they can't....... an achy feeling. It was 2 years and a month later I had my son. The pain during labour from him was horrible cause of it. Ever since then, if I sit to long or walk too much they start to ache. I use to be one of those people that could crack about every joint in their body. I've stopped that now.

The exercises i've tried is biking, and walking....so far. Biking is really bad for them, rowing. Walking only irritates my knee. I usually walk about a mile in the summer every second day. But its winter here right now and it gets to be about -40 somedays. Too cold with 2 kids under 4years old. I hope you can help...... i'm 30 years old right now, have 2 kids, and am about 50lbs over weights. It time for a change, and time for me to look after myself before its too late.

heavy mama - do you do swimming?

Justin - Hi I am new here. I am so confused on how to actually loose weight because the ways i have done it in the past were using bad coping mechanisms..i.e smoking/not eating/drinking.Now I have major trouble emotionally eating, basically most if not all of the food i eat is to cope with some sort of emotions. I have real difficulty eating anything at all because my body actually needs it, I only very rarely feel pyhsical hunger ( about 3 times in the last 3 years! ) and used to see hunger as a nuisance something that interferes and annoys me and gets me all into a panic.

i know i should eat veg, fruit, protein, good fats etc but i dont know where to begin! do i need to eat protein even though i dont lift weights? And also if I cut out protein completely then would this mean if i lost weight then i would loose a lot of muscle? this really scars me as i have lost weight over and over again in the past (to being underweight, then piling it back to being overweight.) so i prob lost a lot of muscle. Could you give me any advice on what I should be eating, i.e do i just eat fruit and veg to loose weight, or do i need to eat protein or is low carb best? thanks for any info.

Yes I like to swim.... but can get costly. I'm willing to work threw some pains, in my knee and hips. But i'm not sure if exercising is good for them, or if it will cause further damage to my joint... someone said would make them better in the long run. I just need to know different types that will be less painful. No pain no gain, is what people say.

Heavy Mama - Take it from me, "No Pain No Gain" is what INJURED people say.

If it hurts to do an exercise then very simply don't do it. Pain is a signal from your body that you are causin it harm.

I've helped many women with knee problems, including one lady, Liz, 65 yrs, who last year had a knee replacement. She's exercised with me after having the op and we have elimated much of the pain and she can swuat much further pain-free than before, because we've successfuly strengthened and mobilized the joint (she also lost 17lbs and about 4 waist inches in this 2 month period).

So I think there's a good chance the same may happen to you. All you need to do is learn the 'hip-hinge' exercise, or Straight-leg Deadlift as it's often known (you can Google it).

This is basically like a squat with straight legs, which strengthens your hamstrings and glutes. This is turn reduces stress on the knee and builds strength around it.

Then, just perform this exercise in place of a normal squat. I can't promise it will take away the pain, but you'll still be able to burn loads of fat and get a great workout without irritating your knee joint.

I personally beleive you should switch to a free-weights resistance routine, starting with just your bodyweight. These exercises will build your core strength and also the strength in your hips. Running and biking has probably caused you pain following the pregnancy because the muscles were stressed during the term and were not re-strengthened properly afterwards. The q-angle of women's hips makes running a poor exercise choice that can lead to injuries in many females, its not uncommon.

So, my recommendation would be to start with a workout such as this: *Use google for images)

Warm Up:

Go through circuit 2 times with no rest between exercies. Rest up to 30 - 60 seconds between completed circuits.

Lying Glue / Hip Raise x 5

Push Ups on Knees x 5

Lying Straight Leg Hip Extension (lie on back, put legs out straight and rest heels on a steo or low box. Raise hips up and down under control) x 5

Main Fat-Loss Workout:

1a) Lying Glue / Hip Raise x 8

No rest

1b) Plank x 15 seconds

Rest 1 minute and repeat sequence once more

2a) Straight-Leg Squat / Deadlift x 10

No rest

2b) Bird-Dog (put extra padding or a cushion for your knees) x 5 / leg

Rest 1 minute and repeat sequence

3a) Push-ups on knees x 8

No rest

3b) Side Plank x 5 - 10 second holds each side

Rest 1 minute and repeat sequence

Do this every other day (I.e - Mon / Weds / Fr) and on tues, thurs and at least one day on the weekend go for a 30 minute gentle walk (or any other light activity that you have NO pain with)

This workout is simple, basic, will strengthen your week areas and tone your stomach and hips. It'll also have you losing fat steadily as long as your diet is in check (eat natural foods 80% of the time, cheat 20% works without fail). Best of all you can do this workout from home, any time and will take you no longer than 20 minutes to complete.

Give it a go and please let me know how you get on

Hey Tink,

Let me go through your questions,

First, don't worry because you are not alone - 99% of over (or under) eating is due to emotional causes (or boredom).

Yes, you need to eat protien anyway. It has nothing to do with lifting weights, its simply a natural nutrient that makes up the molecules of your muscle, hair skin, teeth, nails and bone. Without it, those things are robbed of strength and health as they cannot be repaired properly (remember your body is constantly breaking itself down and rebuilding, even if you don't lift weights).

If you cut protein out completely then yes you would lose lots of muscle... but that would be the least of your worries...

My advise is to not let the media and so many self-proclaimed 'gurus' make nutrition to be so complicated. Eating for great health and fat loss is very, very, very simple. There are two principles to look at:(Here we go, my nutrition 101!)

1. QUALITY of food (NOT quantity)

Focus on choosing foods that are natural and whole. INCLUDING nuts and any other healthy fats that are high in caloires. I couldn't give a sh*t how many calories are in them. It doesn't matter.

2. WHEN you eat - which is broken into 3 rules

Rule 1: Always have breakfast - a mix of fibre-containing carbs, protein and healthy fat.

My fave choices are poached eggs with a slice of brown toast, or egg on a fried steak (that sounds strange for breakfast at first but when you get used to it you'll feel so much better and more energetic!)

Another option is some scrambled egg or an ommellete with mixed salad thrown in.

Rule 2: Eat before you exercise. A small snack, at least an hour before.

Rule 3: ALWAYS eat after your workout. This is the most important, as it is right now that your body needs fuel to repair. Again, here you want a mix of fibrous carbs, healthy fat and protien (the same as every other meal). Just choose a source of each food and put em together on a plate. Keep it simple.

Focus on quality natural foods and the calories will take care of themselves. You can't overeat on salad.

Eat foods close to nature. Avoid foods that are processed.

So, at least 80% of the time you should be eating a mixture of:

Lean meats

Poultry

Fish

Eggs

Fruits

Vegetables

Nuts

Seeds

Legumes

Beans

Water

The other 20% you can indulge and probably keep your fat-burning results going. If not, then up your good eating to 90%.

That's pretty much all you need to know to get started. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise or make it more complicated than it needs to be!!

Don't hestiate to ask if there's anything you want explaned further.

Thank you soooo much Justin, you are sooooo awesome. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. I thought I might get an exercises or two. But wow, I'm speechless and kind over whelmed. Never thought you'd help me with a really good workout curcuit. Keep up the outstanding work. Wish you were here in winnipeg to see my progress as it's happening. But I'll put pictures up as often as I can and keep you informed about these exercises and how they work for me. I figured out earlier that I can do them around my 4 year old.... so cute she was trying to do it with me. And told me good job after, but my 2 year old thought I was playing horsey and kept trying to get on top me. Little brat!!! LOL WOW thanks again..........

Hey, thats great, when it comes to the point where you need to lift extra weight, stick her on your back lol!

Its no problem. I see a lot of poor information floating around the internet, most of it from people who aren't even fitness trainers, and have never helped a single client in thier lives.

So I have no problem putting my best information out there and giving my best secrets away.

Keep us updated and with your results (get body fat % and waist / hip measurements too if possible, these are more reliable idicators of progress than weight).

Justin

thanks Justin.

I could pretty much stick to that list of foods actually as I do like healthy foods, ( excpet on special occasions.) however its the quantity of them due to the emotional eating/binge eating....for instance if i got a packet of nuts i would eat the whole bag in one sitting....however i think im just guna try not to be so hard on myself and stick to eating healthy for my first step. It does help to know im not alone with emotional eating...because most of the time I always think its just me!! everyone else eats completely normally! Another quick ques - What would you say about skimmed milk? I drink a lot of milk about 1 to 2 litres a day and worried about the carbs in milk. Thanks

Y'know what, I'd rather you ate a whole bag of healthy fat and protien-rich nuts than overeat on jam donuts!

But because of the fibre content of natural foods such as nuts it'll be hard to keep snacking on them as you'll get full up after some time, wheras with sugary snacks you can keep going and going and going!

I actually tell my clients to eat healthy fats freely. A whole bag of nuts would be the healthiest thing a lot of people have ever eaten lol!

The only way to combat emotional eating is to overcome the actual situations (or thoughts / perceptions) that are leading you to feel those feelings in the first place.

For example, if you were stressed due to a hectic, demanding job and eat to console yourself over that then the best thing would be to reduce the stress in your job.

If its down to negative emotion due to a family / close relationship, then you'd need to get to the bottom of that.

If the netagive feelings are down to issues with your own self-esteem or confidence, then likewise you need to get to the bottom of that. Try some positivity exercises (such as The Secret - Ive never read it but apparently its helped a lot of people).

Not to mention that just getting a goal set and sticking to that plan with a coach or mentor on your side will start you feeling better immediately, and when you start seeing results from your weight loss program your confidence will keep increasing.

There are some other tactics to curb emotional eating - such as RIDDING your house of junk food so that you can't do it, or having lots of pre-prepared healthy snacks on hand - but that's just like taking painkillers for a broken leg. It treats the symptoms, not the cause.

Lol about the nuts and jam donuts! But that is a good point to make. I try not to have junk food in, i only tend to get junk if i panic and want to binge eat, although I will try get things such as dried fruit or brown bread if i feel like a junk binge ( but again I end up eating the whole loaf of bread. DOH. ) or if I bake, because i bake quite a lot for people and end up eating a lot of the mixture and things i make ( cookies and cakes ), but left over sugar after a baking session I have to throw out. I don't have a coach or mentor, however might look into getting some help for some self esteem issues. I will look up that book. Thanks for all your advice.
