Fat and hair

Alright,

I forget who told me this or how I even found out. But I was once told that overweight/fat/obese men have higher estrogen levels than their average sized male counterparts, and that this can cause more (and weird patterned) back hair.

I am overweight, and have backhair (not to be gross, its not a ton of hair), but there is one part on my back where it grows faster and in a weird pattern, is this because of my obesity/overweight or is this just genetic? Its not really a big deal because its just hair, I just think it would be nice to know if that fact is true or not.

Thanks guys!

That's probably just some old wives tale. I'm a fat piece of crap and I look like a shaved penguin who doesn't have much hair at all.

Actually I'm not sure about that. Women with hormonal imbalances and too many male hormones usually have a problem with too much hair, especially in places where it shouldn't be......not sure if just being overweight would cause the same imbablance and overproduction of testosterone though.

I'd guess it's a mixture of both....if 'hairyness' is in your genes, and you're overweight, you might have a tendency to sprout more stubble than usual....*lol*

Then again, I've seen skinny dudes with back-fur, so......not sure really.

Hormones can play a role in hair growth, but its male hormones (androgens) not estrogen that will effect body hair such as on the back. Estrogen is typically associated with thinning hair.

I've read about weight and hormone changes effecting hirsutism in women, but nothing about men. Genetics is probably the larger factor here, and sorry, but that can't be changed.

Also, ChefChiTown is apparently a pudgy shaved penguin, so that's some pretty strong evidence right there.

I'll add I've dated some rug-backed scrawny guys, and practically hairless big guys, and never known there to be a correlation between weight and hair. It's sort of a like a box of chocolates when the shirts comes off. Only, without the fillings. I guess.

...Nevermind.

Thats very true. Especially women with things like PCOS, because of the hormones you get the wonky hair issue, however, if you lose weight you can also sorta control that to a lesser degree. So in that particular case, being over weight doesn't help but it isn't the root cause, but losing weight can help.

For guys? Beats me...lol.

I think with guys it's just genetic.....lol

As for PCOS....I was told losing weight can help with the hair thing as well, but it hasn't. On the contrary, it actually has made things worse.....go figure!!

Oh no! :( If that happens with me, I'm going to dip myself in wax, wrap myself in a sheet, and have someone yank it off! :D Evil PCOS.

Well now...men can have hormone imbalances too...but its much more rare and like you said, its mostly genetic.

Good input

Thanks for all the input everyone, I really appreciate it. ChefChiTown I was sitting in class reading these and yours made me laugh out loud, causing people to stair at me, thanks, haha.

It was just something that I was curious about, and it seems from the posts that sometimes hormones can play a role in women for the most part, but for men it really may just be genetics.

And on the whole waxing thing PaperPlanes, I've had my back waxed before...totally not worth it, besides the pain, your will most likely end up with a serious case of acne on the back (backne as its been called). Well, thats how it turned out for me anyway...every time...

I use nair now if I'm going to do it, much easier, same results, no pain.

Haha, I LOVE waxing things!

OUCH!! i was a hairy little fellow and tried everything from shaving to waxing. I finally had laser hair removal on my back and love it. I'm all nice and shiny now lol. yes its expensive and YES it hurts like hell but well worth it if u ask me

How much

How much does it cost for laser hair removal? I'm considering that on parts of my back for the future, but I knew it would be an expensive procedure. I mean, if laser hair removal one day will keep PaperAirPlanes away...

Thanks PaperAirPlanes, now when I see your posts all I can think of is an insane person running around with a cup of hot wax snatchin hair off people.

well it takes about 6 sessions becuase your hair grows in cycles. it was 400 per session and prob one of the most painful things ive ever gone through and i say this after going through brain surgery!

I had laser hair removal too (yes, I have hairless armpits). I didn't think it hurt THAT bad, but it was a much smaller area than an entire back. If you have the money or can get it for a christmas/birthday present I definitely recommend it. It was 800 for how ever many sessions it takes to be perfect.

Wow, thats a lotta pain, but it seems like the cost hurts just as much. Well, someday I hope I can afford it, thanks for lettin my know asphaltdiver. Much appreicated!

I can't really vouche for having a ton of body hair, my arms are pretty much hairless and the only place that I have a TON of hair is my head. But I pretty much wax all of the unecessary hair off my body including legs, below the belt, eyebrows, etc...Having a lot of hair weirds me out (so I take it all off) lol. SO i try to keep as smooth as possible. I dont think waxing sucks that much though so I do it myself but Im a little bit of a masachist, where I enjoy pain....so maybe im the wrong person to be taking advice for haha!
