Fasting

Hi there. Long post...

I need some advice here, and hope you will give me some :)
I've decided NOW that I want a better lifestyle, I weigh about 145..Better late than never!

In about 3 and half weeks, I will be fasting, which is abstaining from food, water, smoking(which I don't), and drinking(which I don't). This is part of my religion, which I follow, and I can't ignore it. The fasting will last about 30 days, where I can't do the things listed above, from approx. about 6am til 8pm..which is about 14hrs?! When I am able to eat, at 8pm..there is a table full of food with either sugar, fat or salt or all of them in it, how are you supposed to control the hunger?

How do I deal with the exercising and dieting, when I know I can't drink after running or anything active? .. Or should I just take it easy on that and worry about my nutrition more?

Please help, and thanks in advance.

Hi redalimajel,

I don't have any experience with fasting...but here are a few ideas that might help.

Exercise wise, perhaps trying exercising at about 7pm. That way when you're done you'll be ready for dinner and your body will be able to re-energize.

When you do eat, resist the urge to scoff the food. You'll find that after an entire day without eating your stomach will feel fuller quicker so eating too fast will just make you feel uncomfortable.

Don't worry if the foods are high in fat. Just make sure you're getting a good mix of proteins, carbs and vegetables. Because you haven't eaten all day your calorie intake will be much lower, even if you dinner is high calorie. If you eat slowly and really focus on everything you eat you are likely to stop eating once you reach the point where your body knows you've had enough - where as if you eat fast it's your head that's in control and you'll be more likely to over eat.

I hope that's helpful!

Hi there. I can see how that could be a problem. I've fasted before, both for religious and personal reasons, but not for 30 days at a stretch.

I pretty much agree with the advice above. Really focus on eating slowly when you break your fast in the evenings. Start with fruit if you can and then move on to heavier things. Try to make the best choices you can from what is available, but I wouldn't worry too much about controlling fat and sugar for this period. I'm not saying go super crazy, but don't freak out about it. :)

It is hard, especially the first few days, but after that you should be in a better place to deal with it.

again on the exercise front i agree, low intensity is going to be best so you dont overdo it so just try walk as much as you can, use stairs in buildings instead of lifts etc.
