Fasting Questions...

hello all,

I have been on a diet for 35 days and am down 20 pounds.
I'm 22 years old and my starting weight was 276 and I'm currently 256.

I been switching the diet up frequently looking for best results.
First 10 days or so were lean cuisines and low calorie ( got very sick of it).

And then i did a 5 day NO carbs which i enjoyed until someone scarred me about organ failure etc and said my kidneys can give out, 5 days low cals 2 days fasting then to low carbs where i was eating 20 grams of carbs a day of lettuce and pickles. I had about 5 mess up days during this time all between switch offs etc.

Well, heres the thing....i have a biggest loser weight loss contest and it ends on July 5th and i know I'm trailing the leader right now. I need to really switch gears for good and lose some serious weight and i was thinking of fasting.

my game plan is to eat sugar free jell-o ( o calories) eat lettuce and celery and other so called negative calorie foods and drink tons of water and green tea. I know i have the will power to do this and it shouldn't be too horrible even during the hard times because i work at home on my cpu and dont have a schedule of anywhere to be at any giving time lately. So its a great time to do something like this.

i got so upset today when i looked at scale and saw i gained 3 pounds over past 5 days when i have been jogging 2 1/2 miles every day and being strict on the low carb diet. I also lift 2 days during this time and am wondering if i built some muscle which will hurt with the contest because its based just on pounds and not fat %.

I know fasting comes with consequences.
I plan on July 6th when weight loss bet is over to continue to loss weight but i want to move out of the fast slowly by adding protein and eat salads and do a 1000 cal diet a day and then move up to 1100 1200 etc so i don't gain the fast weight right back on. Also at this point i want to start working out more and get back to jogging. To be honest i was feeling great! when working out and really felt like i was losing weight and feeling good about self. But i still do want to win this bet....i have $6500 up for grabs, so its important.

I'm looking for support from people who have done this and advice.
I don't really want to hear the scares and the negativity saying which is more important health or the money? blah blah blah lol

Thanks

Yikes. Whoever set that weight loss contest up is an idiot. A 400-pound person can safely lose a lot faster than a 150 pound person, which is exactly why BL does it as percentage of start weight. Fortunately, you're unlikely to die in attempting to win, which is more than can be said for the "who can drink more water" stupid contests.

Because of the relatively large amount of money involved, I suspect you're likely to ignore any attempts to convince you to switch over to a sustainable plan now. So...

- do a search for PSMF
- knock off the pickles, at least towards the end, because sodium encourages water retention. (Plus low-carb should be all about dark leafy greens, not nutritionally-empty pickles and iceberg lettuce.)
- toss out the scale. Water weight fluctuation is going to make you insane, and none of your intermediate weights are going to matter for your goal

thanks for response

I agree about the contest being set up wrong, but i think i have a great shot at it. We have 20 guys who put up $200 and i have side bets of $500 with 3 people for 1 on 1 comp. I think i have an advantage because of my age. Everyone else is over 35 and we are all about same size. The guy leading isn't too far ahead i don't think. Either way this is a win win for me and i want to do the some good weight training once its over and get in a healthy shape.

I'm wondering if the pickles screwed me up.
and yea...i should just throw the dumb scale out. I was just so proud of myself for all the jogging i have been doing in the heat! and really though it would make my day and i would see a big drop.

i think this very low calorie fast for next 25 days or so should win the contest.
what do you think about my approach when ending the fast? Good idea on moving up in calories slowly. Or will it not matter and i gain weight right away?

You should anticipate putting on about 5 pounds of water weight. That weight wasn't fat when it left, and won't be fat when it comes back. You can put it on slowly (so you don't notice the scale moving up) by increasing calories slowly, or you can put it on fast by increasing calories fast. So whichever you find psychologically easier. But in either case, it's just water. Not some sign that your body has gone into "starvation mode" (oh, noes) or you've screwed up your metabolism or anything like that.

Multivitamin never hurt. Heck if I know what else would be helpful, but Google is probably your friend in that regard.
