Expanding chest

After hearing my grandpa talk about this a couple years back i have just started trying it. I guess by expanding ones diaphram/ lungs one can increase their chest size a number of inches. I read an article by a doctor online( seemed to be the only one) on this. He said that the largest breath someone ever takes is from a smoker. The point is to breath in and hold it for 6 seconds with good posture. This is all i realy know, So my question is, Is this true? can this be done?

sorry i had this in the wrong section before.

I've got to check my "Bodybuilding Encyclopedia", but I believe that there is an entire section on ribcage expansion, which is basically the only way I know to expand one's chest circumference. I do remember that it says that this is more possible when younger, as it has to do with some bone and/or tendon growth, but I want to reference it correctly so I'm not 'blowing smoke'.

I'll check, and get back to you.

This is actually an old vedic (ancient Indian - as in from India) breathing technique used for meditation, circulation of energies, and awareness of the spirit. If nothing else, it's going to be good for you :)

I know that pearl divers off Pago Pago used techiniques like this to allow themselves to expand their lungs quite a bit more and hold their breath longer.

Breathing techniques are an important part of fitness. Most people do it naturally, but runners for example, get a very specific rhythm of deep breathing. Deep breathing of course means breathing down into your lower lungs, nearer your stomach - whereas shallow breathers and quite a few bodybuilders fill their chests with air instead.

When weightlifting, I believe you want to inhale on the eccentric motion (lowering the weights), and exhale on the concetric motion (lifting the weights) for the best results.
