I've been putting off this post........ because... it could get ugly.
When broken down to a scientific formula, food vs. food out..... is true....... but most of the time just knowing that isn't enough, you're completely eliminating the human factor, since people are not machines.
To me.. this is sort of like saying... "just put gas in your car, and it will be fine" not so.....
I believe that taking an ACTIVE part in your weight loss gives you more control over your weight loss plan, you're taking control of your entire physical health, not just your cholesterol levels, etc. IT also not only allows you eat more, exercise also helps regulate your hunger, whether you're overweight or underweight. It gives you the mental edge, everyone loves to have more control over their lives.
Whereas only having the PASSIVE component of weight loss, eating less, makes a lot of people hungry, fidgety for their next meal or snack.
In my personal experience,... when I exercise 1/2 hour a day I cannot help but to lose weight, I might have a HORRIBLE eating binge during that time, but I'm able to quickly return to good eating the next day.
I'm not going to bore you with all of the benefits you derive from exercise, they're out there, but one important one that I feel needs to be mentioned is that you really have an increased energy level during the time you workout. I've heard some students here say they don't have to workout, but when I was in school (a good while ago), I couldn't afford to NOT work out, I needed less sleep, and was more alert during the day, and this is without any caffeine at all.
......
Also.... I feel much more confident during periods of working out.

I agree that exercise is beneficial for weight loss and general health.

I do know, however, several people who lost a lot of weight without ever doing a minute of exercise.

Personally, exercising makes me feel better about myself. Getting my stuff done makes me feel as if I accomplished something and did something good for myself.

But not everybody feels like that, so yes, exercise is certainly good, but it's not impossible to lose weight without it.

yea, i agree, my Bro in law lost like 80 lbs without any exercise. But i'm not going to disagree that exercise is probably a huge help in weight loss and I know it makes me feel strong! so i love to do it!

In my humble opinion it's all about diet and consistency. Then exercise. you need a program you can honestly stick to, whether it be exercise or diet. But if i had to pick I'd say diet > everything else. Just sucks that diet is the hardest one for me :cuss:

i agree with you too that exercise is important, i read somewhere the key to weightloss is 70% diet 30% exercise.?
i think it depends how much weight you have to loose to be honest, the bigger you are the quicker it comes off, but when you get down to the last stone or 2 to get a healthy bmi i really think that you need exercise to shift the last pounds!

p.s good post i love a good debate muahha :)

I have to agree with the previous responses, exercise is wonderful for your health and wellbeing but really if I had to choose either exercise or diet to lose weight I would choose diet.

Easy to decide..which is easier..cutting 1000 calories a day from your diet or burning 1000 calories a day exercising.

Useful? Yes.

The best thing? No. Sorry Monster, not in this case. At least, not for everyone.

I have done it both ways. I lost 100 pounds without lifting a weight or running a yard(outside of normal activity) and I currently have lost 71 pounds dieting with running and boot camp thrown in . The weight loss is the same but my body looks completely different this time. The exercise helps with the loose skin as well.

A few years ago I lost 50 pounds in 3 mos. Through diet alone...and I ate crap I'd never (or hardly ever) eat now: Fat free chips, diet soda, fat free junk alternatives) . Most of that 50 lbs. was giving up soda. back then I drank a 12 pack of pepsi a day. So, it CAN be done.

This time I am eating right, I try to eat whole foods as much as possible. I eat lots more protein that I used to. I don't eat many carbs, and what I do eat are before 5 pm per my nutrionist/personal trainer's advice. What I am doing differently this time is I am exercising. I HATED to exercise before. In fact, I have some severe medical conditions (ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, neuralgia, etc.) & I thought it wasn't even possible! I started slow with 3 mos. of twice a week light water aerobics. Since Jan. I have moved from that class to 6 day a week workouts at the gym. I do 3x a week water aerobics at a mid-level class, and the rest of the week I do weight lifting, squats, lunges, fitness ball w/ dumbell exercises & machine weights.
I can't tell you how much better I feel. I am stronger, and I feel so positive. Everyone at the gym has been very accepting of me ...except one person, (but there's always ONE, right?). I feel so much more personal satisfaction by working out. I never thought I'd say that, it's amazing how something you thought you'd hate is actually very challenging/empowering. Still loathe the treadmill, lol...but my trainer said I can do medicine ball & weight lifting exercises instead & still burn a bunch of cals. Works for me!! :hurray:

yes definately, exercise is helpful for weight loss.there is very rare chance that you can loss weight without exercise.if you want to really weight loss, then you must do exercise.

Complete nonsense. Could you please make sure you've got your facts straight before posting?

I'm still sticking to my guns. Exercise is really, really, great in everything from losing weight, to preventing disease, to increasing your energy and mood. Humans weren't built to go to work and sit on their tushies, no matter how little you eat.

Totally agree with that. I just don't think it's impossible to lose weight without exercise.

That said, it will be easier, probably a bit faster and a lot healthier if exercise is a part of the weight loss.

QFT.

If you had said "Exercise is the best thing for your health. period." I would be more inclined to back you up. But the task of losing weight can be accomplished without exercising, and for those with conditions that would prevent them from exercising it is necessary that this is true.

Exercise is hugely important in the grand scheme of things in terms of getting and staying healthy. It's necessary. And it can be an essential part of someone's weight loss program. But to them. I think it is a wise decision to make it an essential part of your weight loss program, but in the end it is possible without it.

I didn't say exercise is most effective for weight loss, I said it is the BEST for weight loss, since so many other benefits come along with it, INCLUDING better body shape (sexy!), which is one of the reasons many people want to lose weight in the first place! It also promotes proper appetite, which will help healthy, regular weight loss, and reduce the chance of eating disorders.
I also didn't say it was the only option!
