Exercise for the lower stomach?

Miss Charlie

Ok in my family for some reason women always carry weight on their lower stomach - I have no idea what this is called !!!

Now crunches etc are great for my abs at the top but they never really had much of an effect on the lower area.

Does anyone have any good exercises I can do for my lower stomach?!

I swear even when I lost so much weight before that it looked wrong I still had a tyre just there! It drives me mad!!

Thanks Charlie

That depends on a couple of factors, and I know nothing about you, but...

I have heard good things about the Tuppler Technique - but I have no experience with it myself (other than just reading up on it). You can't spot reduce - so ????? I look forward to seeing other posts, as my postpartum body will probably need this advice once I loose my excess fat!

I heard if you do sit ups with your legs up it will help work your lower abdomen more but I'm not convinced it's true!

You are going to hate me for saying this, but doing stomach exercise won't help you get a flatter belly. You need to loose the weight. If all you are doing is sit-up and crunches or whatnot you won't see much of a difference. All crunches do is work the muscle behind the fat which can actually make your stomach look bigger.

Start off by doing cardio two to three times a week and doing weight resistance exercise three times a week. Once you start to build muscle then you will start to throw the pounds off. Having muscle makes you burn more calories.

Say for example while your cleaning the house, you will burn more calories doing that simple activity just because you have more muscle all throughout your body.

Don't focus so much on working out the stomach as much as eating right and working out the entire body. (REMOVED)

Haha i dont hate you but i am already doing all of that and yes i am losing weight and toning - everywhere except there!

Even when my BMI was 21 (it's now 25.3) i still had a bump at my lower stomach. I think that is just where i carry the fat - i cannot diet till i lose it all, i'd look anorexic!

Hi Miss Charlie,
Maybe it could be genetically. Anyhow here are some effective exercises for lower stomach.
Any cardio exercise will be best like walking, jogging, running. You can also use treadmill.
Another exercise is cycling. It is recommended best exercise or stomach and abs.

Unfortunately, it's probably due to genetics that the lower abdomen is shaped the way that it is. The only way to get rid of that is to reduce your body fat % through a clean, healthy diet and exercise. Without doing something drastic, you may have to deal with a little extra fat there, no matter what you do. So the question you need to ask is, are you willing to do the work to reduce your overall body fat, or can you live with a slight imperfection? :)

Thanks this is useful and what i thought after the last time i slimmed down and it didnt go.

The difference is last time i lost weight mainly through diet and some low intensity cardio, this time i am doing it through a more sensible diet, and a mixture of strength training and more intensive cardio. So i am hoping that i can get my muscle mass up and body fat much lower and hopefully it will be better this time.

I guess time will tell - i should really focus on getting that slim that its the only problem area! :)

Thanks for everyone's input.

I was told to work my lower abs & obliques to lose or lessen the "pooch". (I am "lucky" to have it to). My personal trainer said weight lifting & weight bearing exercise will get rid of fat faster then cardio. She used to weigh 200+ & now weighs 115, just won a fitness modeling contract for a suppliment co., and works in a gym as a PT, so i suppose I should believe it to be true!
Just Google Oblique exercises & lower ab exercises to get ideas on the moves you should be doing.

Even if you can't spot exercise the tyre fat you are talking about, its worth simply strengthening your tummy muscles. I haven't done tummy exercises much for years and now i feel they've gone slack and i have a protruding tummy which needs tightening up. I don't even know if its fixable. So far i am rather lazy about exercises. I wouldn't mind trying a core strength pilates type of class though.

First, I am convinced that sit-ups and crunches are horrible for us. Dangerous to the low back, and not as effective. Try integrating planks, mountain climbers and jack-knives into your workout.

The problem is i have damaged shoulders and while i am slowly rebuilding my shoulders and i do a very small amount of planks, these kind of exercises put too much pressure on my shoulders to do regularly or enough to make a real difference.

Have you talked to your doctor or a physiotherapist (physical therapist) about your weak shoulders, and anything you can do to get them closer to "normal"? Although I let it lapse and am building it back up again, I have very weak knees and my physiotherapist a few years ago gave me some tricks so I'm able to run (at this stage very little, but before I saw him I'd thought I was completely unable to run, and when I was working on his program I could run quite a bit. I'm re-implementing what he told me at the moment). The sort of thing he told me made a real difference to my quality of life.

if you don't get people-support to help you achieve your weight loss goals, you'll find it very difficult to lose weight..
Good Luck

I see a lot of girls with a bump there. I think it's just where women tend to carry some extra fat. I see nothing wrong with it (in fact, if you look at pics of Taylor Swift, she's got some extra fat there too) it's nothing to be ashamed of!

If you want to work your lower abs then lie on your back and put your feet together then bring them up to the air so they point to the ceiling if you REALLY want a burn put a medicine ball between your feet or have someone push your legs down everytime you bring them up you 'll love it

Doing reverse crunches help to strengthen the core area which will help suck everything in. Just google 'reverse crunch' and there are plenty of demonstration videos online.

I sympathise with you about this problem as I have it too and it doesn't seem to shift :banghead: Although it does get smaller when my weight is down. I've even thought about lipsosuction but I'm not game enough to do it!

If you get your bodyfat percentage down to about .5% which is hard work but you will start to see abs the reason for this being the last spot you lose fat is because your body takes it from the spots that are easiest for it for me it first takes from my upper body then FINALLY the top of my stomach then i start to get dimples in my belly lol then i start to lose weight there is NO SUCH THING as spot reduction without surgery but with proper diet exercise and patience you'll lose it

Doing weighted barbell squats is a great way to target your core by introducing weight balance on your abs. Naturally, you'll need to lose the fat in coalition with the exercise, but if you want that tight tummy, squats are a good idea. Also, look up deadlifts. They may sound very bodybuilderish, but they're a super effective compound exercise that any gym goer can benefit from.

There is some debate on whether or not you can recruit only the lower portion of the abdominal muscles (I believe it is a myth for most people).
A really good (in my opinion) exercise is 'stir the pot' if you have access to a ball - it is very similar to a plank.
Have you had children? - sometimes women (and men) with diastasis recti have a pooch in the stomach area. If you do have a separation of the abdominals regular 'ab workouts' can actually make it worse.
