Exercise after back surgery

Newbie here. 7 weeks ago today I got out of my chair to go to bed and couldn't walk. Shooting pain down my left leg left me hobbling. I couldn't stand or even sit up. I couldn't lift my legs 2 inches off the bed with out cringing in pain. I couldn't make it to the doctor by way of the car. My wife had to call an ambulance to take me to the ER.

Two days later I'm being prepped for surgery to a severely ruptured lumbar disc. So many thoughts were going through my head. "When will I be able to work again? How will I support my family? Will I lose my home? My job?" I was pretty depressed about it.

When I woke up from anesthesia, the first thing I did was try to lift my legs. And i did it! It was such a relief. Through a 15 minute non-invasive surgery I'm walking again. From that moment I made a promise to myself to lose weight to relieve the stress on my back.

I'm male 5'6" and my starting weight was 228 lbs. To date I've lost 22 lbs and 2 inches off my waste. I'm fairly pleased with my progress considering I'm doing it without the help of a trainer. I started walking everyday at first but now I'm up to a slow jog of about 2 miles a day. I've also changed my diet and I'm watching my portions.

I've wondered if there are others out there who have gone through back surgery and decided to lose weight. I'd like to here your experiences.

Hey sorry i haven't gone through back surgery, but i would like to say welldone on deciding to lose weight, also to be jogging two miles a day is really good after surgery.. keep at it!

My mom went through back surgey last year as well. She hs metal rods holding her spine in place...... we were in the same boat with not really being sure what she would be able to do after the surgery.

She walks with me to sometimes and she also really liked boxing class. She couldn't hit the bag with full force but there wasn't a lot of twisting or bending (which were the hardest things for her to do)

It's such a tough thing to go through!

A big CONGRATS on your weight loss so far, that is really great!!

Congratulations on being successful. I have had knee issues and surgery in the past, and I know that my weight loss has helped out a lot at relieving pain. I can not imagine the feeling of immobility that you had, I'm sure it was a real eye opener.

It sounds like your plan of starting off slow and ramping up with the exercise is a good idea.

What kind of physical rehab did you go through? Are you still doing any?
