I really am excited to find this site. This is my first post, but I have been lurking and checking things out. This forum is awesome and has me stoked! I have spent the past several days reading as many of the posts and stickies and i have found SO much encouragment and great information. The support you have for one another is wonderful too. I have much to learn and it feels good to know there is such a great forum to share ideas and encouragement. Thank you! I am just beginning my new way of life- for the LAST time. No more Yo Yo'ing. I have been overweight most of my adult life and battled with it for many many years. I have made up my mind that I am tired of this extra weight I carry around and I am not going to control me anymore. My children are grown and out of the house so no more excuses for bringing junk into the house, or "waiting untl after the holidays." NOPE, the time is now so 2 weeks ago I began my journey. My frame of mind is good and I am ready to get this done!! This is it!!! I have taken the reins and have gone back to the basics. More fresh fruit and veggies and lean meat and dairy and very mindful of the portion sizes and caloric intake. I have just begun but over the past two weeks I have lost 8 pounds so far and my goal is to loose at lease 2 pounds a week from here on out. In the past, I would have had a "cheat" at this 2 week mark. I am not even tempted right now because I know I have to do this. I realize I have a big job ahead of me and I know I need to be patient and work hard, but I know I am on the right tract. Patience is something I will need more in the coming weeks, months, but I know it will be worth the hard work because I will feel healthier. I am hoping my weight loss helps with some of the medical issues I have, which for now put some limits on works outs and excercise, but that hopefully will change as I drop the weight. I know I have to burn what I take in and for now that is a start.

Anyway, that is a little about me. I will see you around and look forward to learning more and more.

Welcome to the board and it sounds like you're on the right track and have a great attitude.

I figured out that what I really needed was a lifestyle change and not another "diet" It won't be a smooth easy ride, but like anything in life and with even raising kids, you know that there will be bumps in the road, but it'll be great in the end.

Good luck!

Weigh In's ??

Thank you for the welcome Flat Fender. I am totally in the same place as you are. This has got to be a lifestyle change for me too. I have alot to loose and I know there will be bumps in the road, but it will totally be work it. I am in a good place right now as far as sticking to my routine and I hope I can continue as the weeks and months approach. Saturday/tomorrow is my official weekly weight in day. (only my 3rd week) It is hard not to peek but I go nuts with daily weigh-ins. The daily flulucations, be it water or something else, just make me crazy. The only thing I weigh daily is my food portions. LOL Just courious, how often do most people weigh themselves? Daily? Weekly? Monthly?

I'm guessing that most members here weigh themselves weekly. I usually weigh myself every few days just to keep an idea where I am. Weighing yourself every day can become obsessive to some people.

In "The Club" section there's a long thread discussing weighing yourself:

I see you're weighing the food you eat is that is really the best way to do it. That's how I've done it for the past year. I was just measuring with cups and whatnot in the past and wasn't having much success until I bought a digital kitchen scale. Now that can become a obsession too. I've learned proper portions on many foods but I still check it with the scale.

The other tool that really works for me has been using myplate at livestrong to daily keep track of my calories and weight on a chart.

fitday is another good site for the same thing.

Thanks for the info Flatfender. I use the LoseIt app on my Iphone. It records your food intake, excercise and keeps track of your weight loss. I have wanted to get a new phone, but this one app keeps me from getting a different phone. It is really an easy tool and the good thing is, I am able to check nutritional info while I am on the go. There is an online version of it too and it is FREE. I will check out the link you provided. Thanks so much!

Hi and welcome. This is a good place to get support. Losing weight and eating healthier usually lessens a lot of health issues.

Thank you for the welcome Lyn, I knew I had found a great tool when I found this website. Everyone is so nice and supportive of one another. Tons of great info too. Yesterday was a challenge for me (the family went out for Mexican food, my ultimate favorite) I brought half of my dinner home, but I think I made up for it snackin on the chips and salsa. :( I gotta give myself a little slack I guess, but I really was disappointed in myself. Tomorrow is a new day, right? I have learned to pass on the Mexican food for a while, maybe a once a month treat in MODERATION. Moderation being the key word here.
Thanks again for the welcome.

Hello :seeya:
Well done so far! It sounds like you're really motivated, and doing the right things. Don't stress if you have a bit of a slip, but I think it's a perfect idea if you dodge (or have once a month like you mentioned) the things that are a trigger for you.
My fav thing was always chocolate, so I'm staying as far away as I possibly can because I never want to stop once I start!
Anyway, wishing you all the best and I look forward to your updates :)

Thank you for the support Jess. I have chosen Saturdays for my weigh in date as well. I just bought a new digital scale. The one I had been using was not a digital and so hard to really see progress because it moves around with the slighest movement. I think seeing a more accurate weight loss with the digital one will be encourag me to stay focused. I guess I am lucky in that I have not had any issues with craving chocolate. Sure I like it, but it is not one of my triggers, thankfully.
In reguards to excercise being a challenge because of some medical issues, I purchased one of those mini cycles that you use at home. I LOVE IT. I can pedal from a regular chair or put it on a table top and use it to give my arms a workout. The one thing I dont know is how to accurately judge the calories being burned during use. It has a "calorie counter" but just as the reviews has said, I dont think it is accurate at all in tracking the calories burned. So for now, I am just keeping track of my time on it and just tell myself it is good for my muscles and is burning more calories than I would burn if I was not using it. A win win. I can go longer using my arms than I can with my legs, but I guess it is like anything, you have to work up to gain more stamina. I think it was worth the $60 bucks because without it I would not be able to get much excercise in. I really like that I can do it at home. Eventually I hope to get more vigorous excercise but for now I can pedal until my heart's content.
With my new Mini Cycle & new digital scale I am back on track, not even tempted to cheat and that is a GREAT feeling. I am excited again. Iwill keep watch on your progress too Jess. It is always motivating to see other's success.
Keep up the good work everyone, we CAN do this!!!

Hi again!
The mini cycle sounds fantastic! And I know what you mean about the scales, we had one that was so sensitive, if the floor wasn't exactly level it would go retarded. We have wooden floorboards in our house and they're soooo not perfectly flush, so I've ended up throwing it out and now just use the Nintendo Wii Fit to weigh in.

That's so great you weigh in on Saturdays too :) we can definitely encourage each other. :hurray:
