I've read some posts from people who think that surgery to remove excess skin from your belly will cost huge amounts of money. It sure can, but it didn't for me. Because my skin was hanging low enough and met certain criteria, my doctor was able to get my health insurance to cover the cost of the panniculectomy (skin removal from my abdomen) surgery, minus my co-pay and the additional $1000 to have my belly button remade and work done on my upper stomach. Yes, $1000 is a lot of money, but it was no where near what I thought I was going to have to pay.
I never would have sought a doctor's advice if someone hadn't mentioned to me that what I had was probably excess skin. I thought I was going to have to exercise it off or be stuck with it. And after years of eating right and exercising, it had gone no where. It was a weight off my shoulders to know that there was nothing I personally could have done (short of not getting it in the first place) to make the problem go away. Even if the surgery had not been approved, that knowledge helped me a lot. I was able to forgive myself.
I've blogged about my journey on if you're interested to see some pictures and learn more about what recovery is like if you are thinking of going through something like this.
