excercise while injured

hi everyone.

just registered and if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

I injured (knee) myself a few months back (then have re-injured twice since then), it is suspected cartilage and lateral ligament damage...im able to walk (limp) on it...but cant really straigthen or bend fully.

Now, this is probably a very stupid question BUT i wanted to know if there was any excercises i could do at home that doesnt involve running or using my legs? Maybe something i can do with my arms, to assist with keeping up fitness/losing weight.

cheers

What sort of equipment do you have a your disposal? (at home or access to a gym?)

There are some body weight exercises you can do and some weight training exercises you can do.

The most important thing is letting the knee heel completely and not putting stress on it (of course).

hey.

i have a home gym here, lots of free weights, bench etc, and a home gym with pec deck etc on it.. boxing bag and thats really about it.

sounds like your more likely to have damaged your meniscus, and possible the ACL ligament. How did you injure it the first time and follwing times?

If it is one of the above which is what i think from what youve said youll need to get an athroscope, becuase neither heals on its own..

yeah ive had the MRI and need to see my specialist again soon to decide what the go is. Iv been to physio and they also said that its most likely ive injured the ACL, lateral and meniscus. My ultr-sound showed fluid under both ligaments.

ok here is a long story...

i injured it, believe it or not...just getting up off the ground. My legs were crossed and i got up with-out using my hands...just sort of pushed up with my legs and heard a pop in my knee, couldnt walk on it...and was in huge amount of pain. Knee swelled up. went to the doctors had an x-ray...no break.

Had an ultra-sound a few days later (after being told wrongly by the doc that the radiologist wasnt in for another 3 days)....they found some fluid on my lateral but other then that there wasnt much there. the doc bandaged it up and told me to keep off it...i wasnt able to move it anyways..i could keep it bent and to straighten it just killed...so i kept it bent...over the next few days of not moving it at all and keeping it bent i developed DVT in my right calf...so things went from bad to worse.

the docs then told me to focus more on the DVT and not to really worry about the leg injury...so for the next few weeks thats what i did. now after about the 5th week my leg had improved heaps and i was able to walk on it with no pain but not fully able to straighten it...the 2nd injury came soon after i was again on the ground..lying down in my lounge room watching tv..when i sort of shifted myself along the ground my knee went again, not as bad as the previous injuiry but still painful and not able to put pressure on it. THIS time it only lasted about a week and a half, and i know this sounds stupid but it was like it had fixed my leg, i was now able to straighten and bend it pretty much the whole way...no pain at all, was almost at 100%.

I went to a specialist (orthopedic) that i had previously booked into see. and told him the story...he did a few tests (mcmurrays test???) and pretty much said that he suspected i did my lateral ligament and that was it. because it had healed he said i could resume normal duties. following weeks i ran on it fine...played football (didnt go full on, just light stuff) and had no problems at all. i was able to hit the gym with some excercise bike work.....then i was out the backyard playing with my dogs when i bent over and my leg just had a sharp pain shoot up the side, much like the first time i injured it....so thats where im at now, ive had the MRI and now waiting on seeing specialist again.

SORRY for the long ass rant....

yeahhhh...wow some pretty poor medical personal :p

Dr pinczewski is the best with knees. Anyway sounds like they didnt and it is quite strange that they didnt test for your ACL. What that do is slide the tibia forward on the femur and if theres no jerk (which indicates the ACL is intact) then they know the problem and you wouldnt need and MRI etc to waste your money on as any other damage such as menisuc tears they could just do while doing the ACL graft.

And by the way just because you can straighten your knee now doesnt mean its healed, the torn flap may have hidden away.

Now that your DVT is taken care off, i would get the diagnosis and work from there, then obviously work up your leg muscles and that.

meanwhile you could ride a bike to keep fit.

Tell me about it. My GP actually sent me to HOSPITAL when he found out i had DVT. after waiting 4-5 hours in the waiting room i got into a bed, waited anothe 2 hours before a doc could see me, she tells me i shouldnt be there and that the GP should have started me on the anti-coagulant meds right then and there and that i shouldnt have been sent to the hospital. Its pretty much been the docs screwing me around for around 2 or more months.

Yeh still cant fully straithen my leg...still a bit sore too, so not sure if i should ride the bike as i dont wanna do further damage.

Yeah the majority of them are hopeless with a capital H.

Yeah i dont know what country your from but you should be seeing a knee surgeon, and hopefully and can tell you what he needs to do. An operation as quick as possible is whats needed ! :)

thennnn you can focus on rehab woo

From the same country and state as you my friend.

Lets say it is ethier menisus and or ACL how long am i looking at doing rehab for? will i ever get back to 100%? in regards to running and playing footy (league)

Oh really, yeah try and see dr pinczewski his the best. Assuming you done either one or both:

meniscus: cheaper, can walk pretty much straight away and probably up and running around 6 weeks. Although if they have to remove some of it things such as long distance running would be best to stop because the prospect of early oestoarthitis, which youll probably get no matter what.

ACL: more expensive and a lot longer to get back to something like soccer, which would be around 9months. You should note that becuase youve torn it before your more liekly to tear it again than someone whos never had it done.

Hopefully its neither or at least the meniscus, let us know how you go.

thanks for your replies mate.

In regards to seeing that DR. How would i go about seeing him? i take it that the orthopedic ive already seen will carry out the surgery if i need it. or can i ask for another Dr etc?

No worries,

well what you would have had to do was just get a referral from the doctor, then see him at crows nest.

A lot depends on if your insured, if you are then the above is easy. If your on medicare then you could probably see him but then i dont think you can choose what hospital, surgeon etc, i dont know.

But if your insured and want the quickest and best professionals to work with his your man!:p

you can check him out here
