ex-biggest looser fan, sounding off

I enjoy watching the show with my family; it makes for great amusement. They've learned quite a lot not only about fitness/exercise but also marketing/drama/angst (as if we didn't have enough of that in our family :) ).

I was so mad that they did not show the last persons weight in. But I love watching the show it def gives me a boost to see that if they can do it I can too.

I will be dying to see what happens next show.

To Be Continued...

Made me feel like I was watching a damn soap opera that's neverending!! lmao. AHH the suspense!! I love the show though, so now i'll be anxious to see what happens next Tuesday.

I just watched the BL for maybe the second time last night.

I definitely found myself having a lot of conflicting feelings. Watching the players workout did help motivate me to get up and actively pursue exercise. But the routine on the program is completely unrealistic, and, as many other posters have already stated, unhealthy. I was also disappointed to see the show marketing it's own brand of weight loss product. Not shocked, but disappointed.

I don't watch a lot of TV, and reality shows in general turn me off. They sensationalize human experiences to the point that they no longer resemble real experiences. The BL is no exception. Viewers who have no experience with real weight loss and maintenance will watch the program and glamorize the process in their heads – thereby removing themselves from it. Of course, everyone is different, and we all have the choice to not watch.

Also, the side conversation about old fat clothes is awesome! I donated four or five bags when I first lost weight. But I kept my leather jacket from high school. It NEVER fit me; even when I bought it I could never get it all buttoned up. Every once in a while I take it out and wrap it around me – almost twice – just to remember.

Oh, and for craftsy folks, using your old clothes to make new ones (skirts and dresses are easy) is fun!

That reminds me of a funny story - back in college, I had designed the Rutgers University Math t-shirts and 20 years later, I still have several of them. I wore one to our karate demo practice and was explaining to other karate moms the background of it, and one mom responded, I don't know what's worse, the fact you have clothing that's 20 years old or the fact you can still fit into them. :)

This week's episode made me soooo MAD!

I used to love Biggest Loser (it was a major motivation when I first decided to lose weight and started my walking routine)... however, this week's episode really made me MAD :cuss: I can't stand shows that leave you hanging so you'll come back next week. I think it's unfair and horribly anticlimactic :icon_bs:

I'm sorry to hear it (if it's true that the contestants are gaining their weight back) because the contestants are obviously looking to make big changes and when they get back into the real world it must hurt for the weight loss to slow down dramatically because they aren't able to work out for hours and at the same intensity.

Three times I have participated in 12 week body transformation challenges. The first two times I did the Bill Phillips EAS Body For Life Contest. I had some success the first time in 1999 when I did it by myself. I had a lot of success the second time in 2000 when I did it with my GF at the time, wife now. The first time I went back to my old ways within a week or two of the contest ending. No one to blame but myself. For some reason I thought 12 weeks was enough and then I could be lazy for a while. The second time I continued to do well for another month but then I got into a car accident and sprained my ankle and wrist. I couldn't lift weights for months. Instead of continuing to eat healthy and swim or bike, I quit altogether once again. I weighed 192.5 lbs in May of 2000. From that point on I gained weight until I got all the way up to 251 lbs in May of 2008.

That is when I started my newest journey. Almost 10 months later now and I am still losing weight. I am down to 196.5 and getting closer and closer to my goal of 189. I really believe in my brain and heart that this time is different because I also believe that 10 months is enough to change your brain.

Ironically, I am currently participating in the Gold's Gym 12 week Challenge. Not to win anything. I was 208 when I decided to do the challenge and I had 19 lbs left to lose. I figured the last 19 lbs would be difficult so what better way of doing it than participating in some competition. For me, that was just what I needed. I went from being stuck around 205 to 208 for 6 weeks to losing 9 lbs in the first 6 weeks of the challenge. I hope to lose another 9 lbs the last 6 weeks. Personally though, I would love to see a 6 month challenge or even better, a 1 year challenge.

Ok, so I've watched every season of Biggest Looser and have always just loved it! However, this year, my opinion of the show has really changed. I saw the contestants, when they went home...crying b/c they couldn't excersize in "real life" as much, or even close to, as much as they do on the show. I mean, 6/8 hr workouts! can you imagine? Its just not realistic. NOW my newest disapointment is hearing how so many of the old contestants are regaining their weight...Ryan, Matt and now I heard that Eric has gained back over 100 pds...I dunno....its just disapointing to me. I didnt even watch the show at all the last 2 episodes.

Has your opinion of the show changed at all or are you all still lovin' it???

I don't watch that show at all. I think they are regaining weight because they go back to their former habits instead of keeping a healthy and active lifestyle.

Congratulations, Derrick, on trying again and again til you get it right!!!

I am a big "Biggest Loser" fan!! My 13 year-old son and I watch it like it is our religion!! Each season seems to be getting a little more dramatic, and I have to wonder if any of it is staged???

It has to be hard for the contestants when they go home, because on the ranch losing weight it their ONLY responsibility. There they workout 6-8 hours each day, don't have to deal with bills, hubby's underwear on the floor, the kids snacks, etc.--no distractions.

The recommendation as far as losing weight goes is 1-2 pounds per week. These guys are losing WAY more than that. I believe in "slow and steady wins the race." For $500,000, I'd starve myself, too. You have to have more than money as your motivator, and I think they are losing that.

I usually watch The Biggest Loser. I didn't like it at first, though, for many of the reasons already mentioned (it's not a realistic plan for everyday folks, etc.). It wasn't until this season that I learned how much they are exercising (like the OP said, 6-8 hours a day).

I've come to see it as part entertainment and part motivation for dieters. (These contestants are like the superheroes of weight loss.) The show sure does motivate me to exercise - if those contestants can keep on trucking, then so can I!

I'm saddened to hear that some of the past contestants are gaining their lost weight back, but it's not too surprising. It can definitely be a challenge to not fall back into old eating habits when everyday life's stressors kick in. I hope they can find their way back to a healthy lifestyle.

I think this last week's episode was a good testimony to how difficult it can be to keep going with your good habits. The black team won a 24 hour vacation to a resort, and they pigged out on food and drank tequila and Helen even smoked a few cigarettes. What pissed me off though is that even with this, they still won the weigh in. The women on the black team suffered - they either gained weight or didn't lose any - yet the men still lost good weight. Mike seemed like the only one who didn't pig out and of course because he's only 18 he couldn't drink. I really don't understand how Sione and Filipe still lost weight when it seemed like they pigged out and drank just as much as the girls did.

I didn't see that episode. The one where they all got to go home and also had to jog a half marathon made me cry about 5 times though. Man I am such a wuss. :blush5:

I can't believe I watched this show again...

Last week's episode really bummed me out. The part where the former model got screwed out of the prize because the older lady ate the cookie was really disheartening.

Having missed the last three weeks and only remembering it was on at 9:50, I switched over to get up to speed. I gotta say, Sione's last five minutes of the show was mighty powerful. Maybe the best ending I ever saw in BL history.

It's hard to root against a show that slaps ya up side the head with a moment like that.

Good game, Producers.

Love, love, love this show! I am very surprised that Laura voted Sione off, because I think Helen is going to bite her in the butt. They are too close in weight/stature. In my opinion, Sione and his cousin were the best part of the show this season! I love that they want to have a healthy impact on their Tongan community. Those boys are too much fun!

Game play is definitely on now, though they did manage to keep it to a minimum until the last few weeks. I think too many people were pi**ed off last season by the skanky women contestants with all their nasty attitudes.

The only thing that really annoys me (besides Jillian) is all of the "promo spots" in the show, whether they are for Extra gum or a Sleep Number bed!!! Sheesh! Very cheesy.

Happy losing:party:
ABBA

I love the Biggest Loser! I love Sione and Felipe because they have the same values as I do (i.e. LDS) and really carry themselves well! I think the weight loss they are doing is realistic in the sense that they are at fat loss boot camp. It's their job right now.. whether or not they can transition into real life is solely on them and the help they are getting while they are there. They are given the tools to succeed, if they choose to use them, is up to that individual. I'll always be a fan!

I'm a new fan of the show, as I only started watching it this season. However, I have watched every episode of it and absolutely love it. I was shocked and disappointed to see Sione go home. At least we still have Filipe. Another person who I think has done an admirable job on the show is Ron. For his age and health, he has done a tremendous job of losing weight. It was great to see him knock off another 9 last night.

Can't stand the show, personally, although if I am visiting someone and the TV is showing it I get hooked to the screen.

It really bothers me that they take something as important as people's health and turn it into a survivor-style, winner-take-all competition. But I guess that's American TV for you.

In Canada there was a much, MUCH better show called Taking It Off, that ran until 2005 or thereabouts. In that, the people on the show were actually supportive of each other, and the only winning was each person's weight loss. Everybody could win (by improving their health), and in fact the ideal goal was that _everyone_ would win.

I can't stand this "You're not losing as much weight as everyone else. You're a failure. Go home, loser." thing, which is what BL looks like to me.

Sometimes they ran friendly team competitions, but the only thing at stake was bragging rights. It was a very good show, I thought, and looked into nutrition, diet, exercise and lifestyle much more than I have seen on BL.

Probably the reason I hate BL so much is that it falls far short of the show I used to watch.
Good thing I don't have TV anymore.
