First off, a little about me...Im male, 25 years old, 5'8, and currently 170 pounds. I started working out about 5 weeks ago. I was in great shape up until I was about 15 years old. So 10 years of bad health choices.

5 weeks ago I was at 190 pounds. Before I started working out and eating healthier, I couldn't tell you what my calorie intake was...but it was a lot, and not good food either, pop, chips, cheese burgers and donuts. Not healthy at all. Oh yeah, lots of beer too. I would say 2500-3000 calories a day easily. I work in a office type environment, so exercise was something I wasnt getting a lot of. So, do that math, and you'd see man boobs, beer belly, and zero stamina. For the last 5 weeks my total calorie intake has been 1000-1300.

Its not that im eating less food, its the food im eating is healthier...healthy food tends to have less calories than unhealthy food. My typical day of eating is

Breakfast/Lunch: A 6" Subway sandwich, no cheese, brown bread, lots of veggies, (with mayo...im only human lol) meat varies from chicken, ham, turkey and tuna.

Dinner: Another 6" Subway sandwich.

After dinner: either some soup, or a can of tuna with Franks hot sauce. Always a piece of fruint, orange, apple, banana..sometimes baby carrot sticks. Always make sure not to eat anything 4 hours before going to bed.

After eating, I workout for 1 hour. 30 minutes on a bike, rest for 10 minutes, then do 30 more minutes on the bike. Little bits of freeweights, but nothing serious. In the evening, I go back to the gym, and repeat the same workout. 30 minutes on the bike, 10 minute break, 30 more minutes on the bike. Each 30 minutes on the bike, I go approx 8.5km(about 5 miles) and the "calorie counter", which I know isnt 100% accurate, says around 280 calories. So when the day is done, ive biked 2 hours for 34km(about 20 miles) and burned off 1120 calories. I drink tons of water throughout the day as well, atleast 2 liters a day, if not more. I dont drink much of anything else other than water. Ocassional cranberry juice, v8 juice or orange juice...no pop.

According to what i've been reading, this is called a starvation diet. The thing is...im not starving, I cant force myself to eat more than that. My stamina is way way up from when I first started. When I first started 5 weeks ago, it was 30 minutes for the whole day at 6km and 200ish calories. Now, I don't feel tired or drained at all, in fact, this is the best i've felt in 10 years.

So, that about sums it up, i've lost 20 pounds in 5 weeks. I know I should be asking my doctor about this, but unless im bleeding, you'd have to drag me into the hospital kicking and screaming. Thanks for reading this massively long post.

what have you been reading that says you should be sick after 5 weeks of a low calorie diet?

What's your question? Is this diet healthy?

Why low calorie diets aren't good for you long term - and there's no one size fits all "starvation" zone... is that it's realy not sustainable long term-you're not looking at this as alifestyle change but a short term fix - what happens when you get to your goal?

I'd spend a lot less time on the bike and spend more time on weights... and spend some time reading the stickied threads around the forum.

Also get yourself an account at and keep track of your calories and other nutrients...
