Hi all.

Im a 29 year old male that upto now has not really paid much attention to weight issues, however earlier tonight i went to the doctors to get a refil for some other medication.

Whilst i was there, my weight was taken and i was shocked at the result, apparantly im overweight, i measure 170cm or 5 foot 7, and i weigh 13 stone or 183 pounds or 83kg

According to the doc i am about 6kg heavier than i should be and my ideal weight should be 75kg at the most.

I am now going to try and lose some of the weight but i know that it will be hard and difficault,

I was wondering if you have any advice that you may be able to give me. This is what ive worked on already

1) Im going to cut down on the crisps and snacks that i take for dinner,
2) reduce the sugar in my tea,
3) reduce the amount of tea,
4) drink more water (we live in an area where the tap water is not bad to drink)

and where i work i am 5 minutes walk away from one of the biggest canal basins and networks in the uk, and i am going to start going there for my lunch time.

I have roughly worked out the route on the computer and it comes to about 2-4 miles.

I dont know if this will help but instead of sitting down to do work during the day im standing up more and moving around.

I dont drink or smoke and im not normally very sportive.
Never really had to worry about my weight but now i just want to reduce it and would like advice from people that have actually been able to reduce the pounds and not some article that has been written by some graduate that dosent know what there on about,

Looking forward to your help and advice

Mike

Hi Mickey!

Did your doc measure your body fat %, or did he base his decision on the number on the scale? I say this because you could be 83kg with 10% body fat, or 75kg with 25% bodyfat - I know which I'd rather be. Weight isn't everything.

I assume since you're posting here, you at least think or can tell you have some parts that are squishier than they used to be. Good news is, since you don't have much to lose, and you really aren't THAT overweight, you don't need to make huge drastic changes to try to lose weight. Any changes you do make should be something you could see yourself doing consistently the rest of your life. You don't want to "go on a diet" or an exercise program for a couple months, and then go back to what you were doing before. The changes you've mentioned sound like excellent ideas.

On other suggestion I would make is to try to start up some general weightlifting routine. When you lose weight, you lose muscle as well as fat, but if you're working those muscles through weight lifting, you'll keep more muscle and lose more fat. Like the point I made at the beginning of this post, weight isn't everything. You could conceivably lose a lot of weight without any exercise at all just by cutting calories, but you'd end up losing a lot of muscle mass as well, and if you ever gain weight again, you don't magically gain that muscle back without trying to build it (weightlifting, special diets, etc).

Thinking about it now, she didnt take the body mass number, she looked at the scale, typed on the computer and then made her desicion on that,
Ive noticed myself that "some areas are squisher" and would like to get that reduced. I want to start walking more as that helps with the other health issue that i have, ive got mild asthma so hence the reason why i want to do more, and i also like walking,

I know that im not that overweight compared to some people but i would like to get a little bit off.
