Hi pretty people

I am fairly new to this site (I just joined today) and I came here in search of healthy weight loss. I have been restricting quite low for the last couple of months and I keep messing up and overeating (read: binging) because I simply have felt deprived. I think it's time to actually do this the "correct" way, so I can maintain my weight loss and learn to have a healthy relationship with food again.

I have decided to go for a net intake of 1200 calories per day, starting tomorrow. I'll write daily updates here (when possible), listing what I've eaten and how many calories I've burned through exercise.
I'll update my starting weight tomorrow. I want to have reached my goal by New Years, so I'll need to lose approx. 10 kgs by then. I think that is definitely doable.

Starting weight:
Goal weight: 55 kg / 121.2 lbs

Hi empty & welcome to the forum. How tall are you? 63.3kg seems light to me. I will never be that low. 1200 calories also seems low to me, unless you are very overweight, which you are not. Have you discussed this with a doctor?

Hi Cate :)
I'm 169cm. I used a calculator to determine my ideal weight and overall healthy range.
My ideal weight is around 61 kg and healthy range is between 52.8 kg and 71 kg :)
Which amount of calories would you suggest then?

Hi Empty! 1500 would sound much more manageable to me; 1200 kcal makes it hard to get enough nutrients. 1.69 is not that short :) If you want to increase your deficit you could add some exercise (if you add a lot you will need to eat a bit more again). Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi LaMaria :)
That's what I meant by "net intake", so I'll eat more when/if I exercise. 1200 is not enough for me when I work out :p
Thanks!

Hi and welcome
I agree with my esteemed colleagues (did I even spell that right?) 1500 a day with a bit of activity will be sustainable and will get those scales gradually moving down.

Thanks. I appreciate the suggestions, but my BMR is below 1500 (it's around 1400) so I don't see how I'd lose weight eating so many calories?

All the calculators in the world vary so much I find. We don't know enough about you personally (age etc) but we can go on our experience with weight-loss.
This was in your opening paragraph to your diary, so I know I took it that you have had an unhealthy relationship with food & wanted to change that.-

The answers you have been given reflect what we believe is a healthy approach to sustainable weight-loss. Severe calorie restrictions are neither healthy nor sustainable. When I tried to calculate your BMR it came up with 1647-1667(I put in different ages).
I think if you tried to stick to 1400-1500 calories a day you would lose weight slowly but healthily.
Most of us have had problems with body dysmorphia & unhealthy relationships with food & we don't like seeing others going down the same path. You look young. Now is a good time to develop good healthy habits.

Thank you, that's really nice of you :O
I don't know what to say actually. I have been told so many times that 1200 is the magic number and that I wouldn't lose weight if I ate more than that, so it's difficult for me to suddenly hear something completely different. Please don't take it as me not listening to you guys' advise. Rather, I am trying to understand how I can lose weight eating more, when all I've heard before is the opposite :) I really appreciate all the replies <3

Story time:

I was waiting in line at the airport when I overheard two of the (very young, to my eye) women behind the desks talk about weight loss. One told the other she was trying to get fit for her tropical paradise vacation so they discussed various magazine promises. Then one asked the other how many calories were actually normal for someone who WASN´T trying to lose weight. The answer given was 1200 kcal  I was so shocked I couldn´t keep my mouth shut... So I told them that 1200 kcal/day was low even when losing weight, that 500 kcal/day (which is what one was advising the other based on her magazine "knowledge") is a major health hazard and that they´d need 1800-2000 kcal/day to keep their weight. They looked at me as if I were an alien! The moral of the story is: don´t believe "common knowledge". Even in a time of near-universal internet access people have no idea of what their bodies need.

You can do this, hon, just be sure to focus on giving your body healthy, varied food, try to keep active and be kind to yourself.

Wow, they actually thought 1200 kcal were the norm? :O Good thing you didn't keep your mouth shut! Even if they didn't believe you, I am sure it made them question the diet at least. 500 is very low.. I tried the 5:2 diet once and I couldn't do it, because I felt like crap on fasting days (500 calorie days).

Tried that too :) I could have done it on non-work days but since I'm prone to 4000+ kcal binges I decided finding a healthy average would be more my thing.
