Emotional eating

I have heard a lot about emotional eating- eating for other reasons besides hunger. Today I noticed it as one of my stumbling blocks. I just ate dinner about 2 hours ago, then I sat down to play some video games. I noticed that I felt a bit depressed. I didn't feel like doing anything but just sitting here and felt fairly lousy.

Long story short, I tried to will myself out of making a snack but eventually succumbed. Now I notice just after eating a snack I feel a lot better emotionally. What are some ways to combat this emotional over eating?

I've been accused of emotional eating myself. But I disagree. I only eat when I feel hungry. My problem is that I nearly always feel hungry. I've gotten used to it though. I just put up with the feeling and use steadily increasing willpower to just not eat all the time.

I think I do that. I usually do it when I'm anxious or depressed. I realized I wanted to do it last night. I got all worked up over something (won't bother to elaborate, long story) and the next thing I knew, I was standing in the kitchen and I thought to myself, "What the heck are you doing? You aren't hungry..."

I opened the refrigerator and got out one strawberry which is exactly why I had requested strawberries. I know I'm going to snack until I can get myself emotionally under control. A few fresh strawberries will be a far better vice than, say, chips.

Basically, until I can stop myself from eating because I'm upset, my goal is to replace my bad eating habits with ones that are more forgiving. The water tip is a good one I think. If you can't sit still like I often can't, then drink drink drink. Maybe if you get yourself onto drinking water, maybe you'll get sick of it and stop needing food when upset altogether? Who knows!

I do that too when I am under stress... =( I tend to snack a lot as I work.

So, if i snack a lot, then, i try to cut down on my actual meals. Change it to small meals in between. In this way, I will not be increasing my food consumption. Also, use fruits or salads as snacks. Choose healthy and low fat stuff!

If we can't control our emotional eating, control what we eat!...
