eating after workout

i heard somewhere that after working out, you should wait at least 2 hours before eating anything substantial.. like a meal. is this correct? if so, why?

Within 90min preferly before that, you want to get some simple sugars in you and protein right after your training. Most people use whey protien and dextose but i never bought any dextose so i just eat some fruit (frutcose). Also some complex carbs, oats (This is usually in a shake). After a few hours you would then have a soild meal. This is one popualar approach of course there's different ones.

I eat right after. With 4 cups of milk. The only reason I could think not to, would be that maybe absorption of protein from solid foods is slower than that of liquid.

Eat 60 to 75min before a workout.

Try to get some simple carbs into yourself too right after your workout with your whey.

Good luck.

You just want the food to be digested. If you squats or deadlift on a full stomach you'll know what i'm talking about. Besides you want the energy from the food.

Yeah overloading the stomach before a workout really fatigues you absorbtion and the uptake of food nutrients. The food will sit there longer and you get heart burn from it. And as for eating straight after a workout if you trained hard enough you would probably spew up!

exactly. deadlifts or squats right after a meal equals puking on the gym floor and making an ass of yourself.

If you're doing a cardio workout, that is the time when you wanna wait about 1 hour after you finish before consuming food. Post cardio, the body will still continue burning energy, and as long as the stomach is empty, you'll be burning off extra fat for most of that 60 mins.

the only problem with eating before exercise is just discomfort, some people are effected while others are not, this is because when you eat somthing the blood flow to the stomach is increased to help with digestion, when you exercise your muscles become the primary concern and digestion is slowed.
It's the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption or (EPOC) that is responsible for calorie consumption after an exercise which generally takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 48 hours for the body to fully recover to a resting state. at which EPOC's effects stop. Also it's exercise intensity and duration that mainly influencing EPOC. Not eating after an exercise seems to increase EPOC by around 12%.

Yup. Mainly cramping. You need to eat and drink fluids well in advance, especially for cardio or anything involving your core- anything endurance is also out. Same rules for swimming! Swimming is just another exercise, no?

Lot of people abuse water that way before a long run... Drinking a gallon of water could wind up preventing you from exercising when you start to cramp up 10 minutes into the run.

Thats the only reason you wouldn't want to.. and theres no reason you'd want to since undigested food isn't giving you energy to burn (ie, exercising isn't do anything with that food). But if you don't cramp or feel sick from it... eat away. But I can't imagine anyone comfortably jogging or weight training 10 minutes after completely stuffing themselves. I do sometimes eat light right before I work-out because I don't have the time to give myself that hour or two. Better than a completely empty stomach.

is it right to conclude... ?

Posted the question because concerned maily with effects of eating after workout.. If burning more/less fat is the only issue, as a few people suggested, i'm guessing there shouldn't be anything to worry about.. in terms of harming the body. correct me if this conclusion is wrong..

Post workout shake/meal is the most important meal along with breakfest for people looking to improve lean body mass.

I don't understand your question frankly.

NO there is no health issues with eating before, after or during for that matter when exercising, and a very small diffence with weight loss.

Eating after a weights workout should not consist only of protein, you must digerst 40 grammes of carbs minimum e.g 2 bananans folllowed by 40 grms protein, then eat 1 hour later. As the the whey protein is digested in 1 hour you are then able to eat and provide your body the nutrients.

In my opinion, or more accurately someone else's opinion that i just read in men's health and am going to pass off as my own, it's more or less impossible to eat too much in the 2 hours following a workout. But yeah, as people have said, straight after your workout it's all about protein and simple sugars (whey shake and a banana for me), and then you want to go into some complex carbs after that.

While a banana is better than most things frutose does nothing to increase the blood sugar levels in the muscles but instead the liver. Your better off getting a bag of corn sugar (dextose) at the local grocery store and putting it in your whey protein shake.
