eating after cardio

is it better to eat straight after 45 minutes on the threadmill..or to wait an 1 hour or whatever length of time..

iv heard that if you eat straight after cardio..your raised metabolism will just burn your food instead of body fat..

is that true

please give me a full explanation

i can't give you a full explanation, but i'll tell you what i've heard.
- it is recommended for weight lifters to eat 10-15 minutes after a workout of high protein to avoid any muscle from being broken down for energy and it also aids in speading up muscle recovery
- i have recently started reading a book called "ready, set, go!", which talks about what foods are good after a cardio workout to maximize your body's ability to burn fat after a workout. Apparently, your body will continue to burn fat up to 2 hours after a workout if you don't interrupt it by eating the wrong foods. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten far enough to know what those foods are. Maybe someone else on here has some ideas.

that's a good question ... i know your heart slows down considerably when sleeping, and that may impede it a bit, but i'm not really sure

I read somewhere that they say you're not as hungry after you've just finished your workout?

Might not be true for everyone, but it is true for me, heh.

i think that's because your body is focused on recovering ... but, i could be way off.

but, at any rate, i'm the same. I have to remember to eat right away to get the maximum benefit from my workout.

If you eat after a hard workout I would suggest a power shake...They are packed with protein to help your muscle recover as well as provide the carbs you need for energy to continue with your day. What is also good afterwards is lean protein like baked chicken, tuna, turkey...ect with salad or veggies.....it is complexed and makes your body work to burn it off and use what it needs to recover. :D

I agree....Before I changed jobs my schedule allowed me to run/walk to the gym, work out and the run/walk back home....I did this every morning around 6am...I'd have a piece of fruit and a cup of green tea before I worked out and then a protein shake or protein bar and a bottle of water when I got back. I lost weight...so I guess it worked!

A whey protein shake and powdered gatorade right after workout are very good things to have right after a workout. the sugar will help you not feel worn out after a workout and protein is best absorbed right after a workout. I would suggest a good portion of your daily carbs be eaten right after a workout too. Oh and the body does burn calories for 2 hours after, while weights work for like 6 or 8 hours. so make sure weightlifting is in there somewhere!
