Hello to all from Oz
I am a “newbie“ to this forum - 56 yo fem. 5‘2“ and 74kg (11st 6lb) from Melbourne, Australia, and have just recently (27 Jan 09) had a gastric balloon fitted at a private hospital in Melbourne. I investigated lap-banding, etc. but was advised against it by one of the surgeons at an info session, as, with a BMI of 30, and no other co-morbidities, it would not be advisable for me to have surgery. He referred me to another doctor in my local area who specialises in intra-gastric balloons for weight-loss, which he thought I might be a good candidate for, as I only have to lose 16-18kgs, and I have managed to maintain my present weight for several years. All I needed was a drastic kick-start to get the weight off and to help lower my cholesterol.
I had two appointments with my doctor, blood tests, etc. and she tried me on Reductil first, but it had no effect, so she agreed to book me in for the gastric balloon with the resident gastroenterologist. I opted for the air-filled bag rather than the saline-filled balloon due to the greater tolerance, 12 months till removal and less chance of deflation or rupturing. The cost was reasonable - about AUD$3200 (UK 1398) and I got some rebates from Medicare (I did not have private health insurance), and it includes 12 months’ support from doctors and dieticians.
I was convinced that it was the right way to go for me, as I have tried dieting, drugs and other treatments but nothing really worked for the long term. However, I have not put any weight on in the last 2-3 years and generally eat a healthy diet (apart from my habit of having a cake with my coffee in the afternoon - a habit I hope to break post-balloon). The other habit I need to work on is regular exercise to help keep the weight off.
I don’t recall the actual procedure, as after I had my aneasthetic injected, I remember asking the nurse when the balloon was going in, to which she replied that it had been done - it must have only taken about 10 minutes! My main fears had been: 1. That the operation would hurt. 2. That I would experience at least 3 days of nausea, vomiting, heart-burn, etc. 3. That my body would reject the balloon and/or that I wouldn’t lose weight. So far (3 days post-op), I have had some reactions - bloating and some abdominal pain on the 1st day, a little nausea on the 2nd day and just some minor discomfort on 3rd day (for which I took Zofran wafers for nausea and fentanyl patches for pain - both very effective). I’m writing this on the 4th day (30th Jan. 09), and there is no more nausea or pain, I still feel heavy from the balloon, but generally OK. (PS – 5th day – couldn’t get comfortable at night – felt like I had a stitch in my side and slight pain when I take deep breaths and today went to loo, but felt like throwing up while I was on toilet – finally had decent bowel movement and now feel better.) The best thing is that I have lost weight - 1kg so far (in 3 days!) and that I know that I will be able to tolerate it for the next few months to get to my goal weight (with a little help from my dietician and this forum).
Some other reactions - I find it difficult to know if I’m hungry and, as recommended by my doctor, I only had liquids for the 1st day, then tried some mushy food - yoghurt & pureed fruit, vegetable broth & soup and bircher muesli - so far OK, but I will have to have smaller serves to avoid bloating…I’m having 1/3 cup of food for each “meal”, totalling about 1 cup a day (3 meals a day), and no snacks except for liquids. I don’t feel like rich or fatty foods or even cakes! Also I need to get more fibre - only had small bowel movement on 3rd day and better one on 4th day, but don’t want to get constipated…on that note, I am signing off for now, but would be interested to hear from other balloonists about their experiences. I have a follow-up appt with my doctor on 2 Feb – hope she can help with “stitch” and lingering pain in stomach.
