Drumming?

Hi...
Wasn't sure where to post this...but hopefully someone out there can help me here...
I'm a drummer in a band...and with practice and playing shows...I'm probably on the drums about four times a week...and for those who don't play...when you're playing live...you're giving it all...it can be painful the next day...
now...my problem is that I've been trying to put weight training into my schedule...but I'm finding that while I can fit it into my schedule...the drumming keeps destroying any progress I'm making with the weights...I'm 6ft 165pounds right now...and I'm trying to put on some more muscle to avoid getting any skinnier...and to improve drumming...but like I said...my intense/cardio/drum sessions keep taking it all out of me...
what can I do to incorporate both drumming and weight lifting to increase my size?...
I hope this makes sense...
any other drummers have the same problem?...

hey hippy,

maybe you should aim at doing more endurance training like pressups and pullups etc. as aiming for bulk will cause your drumming to suffer.

ive been drumming for 10 years now and play every day, and after a few years found i got quite large arms, that is why im aiming to build up my chest and shoulders to get myself back into proportion.
you can still get large from endurance.

just respond if you want to talk or anything man,

Hey, Zan...

So...what kind of workout routine did you have to keep yourself in best drumming shape?...
I do have a heavy bag that I use quite a bit...I find that helps...
but, I'd really like to get faster and stronger...

other than just lots of practice, (i know, i know, borrringgg), i used to play paradiddles and others rudaments on a pillow, because there is no bounce, so you have to pull the stick back up. I used to do that most days if watching tv or something.

I also found that getting some bigger heavier sticks worked wonders, im usually a 5b but when they all broke my mate gave me some old ones, which were massive, after using them until i bought new ones, when i played with 5b's again it seemed much faster and easier. so ive always had the bigger ones just for practice, and using them on the pillow.

i know people always talk about rudiements blah blah, but if you actually do play some your overall drumming will pickup, i used to play paradiddles and ruffs etc, for 5 minutes as fast as i could for as long as i could, you'll notice the world of difference especially for that lagging left (or right) hand.

Other than those, and obviously cardio helps your general fitness and endurance, i never found any other weights or exercise helped or hindered drumming for me, although weights made me quicker at unloading the vans.

keep on truckin'

zan

p.s. twirling your sticks about doesn't really help, but it looks mighty impressive.
