Drinking?

So those of yall who have lost weight .. did you stop drinking completely? I'm only 24 and i LOVE going out to drink with friends :) I do cardio from 45min to 1hr 4-5 days a week and eat healthy but then it feels like i ruin it by going out drinking!! I drink Michelob Ultra or Miller Lite which is only 100 calories and 3 carbs but after 6 that ruins my diet for the week it seems like. Is there a better drink with less calories?? I've heard rum and Diet Coke? I dont drink caffeine either though ... I dont want to quit drinking really, i need to learn some control though i guess and just have 2-3 when we go out i guess?

I've lost 15+ pounds the last 3 months and have improved my muscle mass and i drink a lot. Eventhou, i try to not eat much when i do and i am cutting down. Once a week. If you want to hit under %10 BF i believe you won't be able to drink very often,

I used to drink 4-5 bottles of beer every day and sometimes more on a weekend if i went out. I've lost 25 pounds since mid April and I've drank on four seperate occaisions, totalling 12 pints of beer, since then. I used to drink because I loved the taste of beer I didnt do it to get p*ssed or anything like that, but I don't miss it because I love waking up with a clear head on a morning and being without that "my god my gut is huge" feeling.

As far as other drinks go, rum or vodka and diet coke would be a good one but as you said you don't drink caffeine give rum or vodka and fresh orange a go, or even just neat rum or vodka :D.

what do u drink newf?

Iffy - ya sounds like i can only drink beer then ... cant drink OJ or acidic fruits, etc :(
U must be a guy since u've lost that much weight so quickly! why do guys loose weight SO much faster than women!?! I'm been working out and eating healthy since April as well and have lost like 2lbs but my clothes do fit better ... but i drink like 3 days a week so i guess thats the problem, need to quit drinking beer i guess? Doesnt seem like it would make Happy Hour very fun!! I switched to low carb beer which pretty much cuts the calories in half so guess that'll help for when i do go out and drink ...

The guidline I followed (from Tom Venuto) is 2-3 drinks max / 1-2 times a week. So a 6 pack split up over at least 2 days was the absolute max. I drank less than this however. Just remember that the calories still count, so if your gonna drink be sure to skip some of your food with an equal amount of calories. That's why I rarely drank, I did NOT wanna give up ANY of my food lol. Also as Iffy said rum or vodka, I've heard these are better choices than beer...

To quote Venuto...
Beer and other alcoholic beverages can be enjoyed on occasion, but only in moderation. My definition of moderation would be one or two drinks (three at the very most) per day and only occasionally (like on the weekends). Some studies have shown protective health benefits from drinking small amounts of alcohol, particularly red wine. However, drinking excessively will definitely interfere with your muscular gains, decrease your energy and contribute to fat storage.

The primary problem with all alcohol, regardless of what form it's in...

Are you liftin those weights kb? That may be one reason as guys usually put a lot of emphasis on weight training.

I do weight training with my husband, then we do cardio for at least 30 mins (treadmill). Three days a week we do karate, and every now and then go to an hour long cardio class put on by our dojo. We've cut down on calories a lot and I've given up wine (used to have a glass every other night or so)..mostly :) Wine tends to have less calories and maybe a little less carbs than beer, so maybe try that? Unfortunately we haven't lost much weight in the past two months, but I'm down about an inch or so waist-wise. I don't think giving up the alcohol has helped that much!

I drink %95 achlcol, most people water it down 2 to 1. One sixty is about 4000 calories watered down 2 to 1.

I mix it again with water has a usual drink.

Don't ask where i get this stuff but its not homemade :)

I have had success losing weight and i drink usually every weekend... im a big miller light fan so i drink that... its usually pretty cheap too... but when i get ready for the beach its no beer for me!! i can lose about 3-4% bf in a few weeks of not drinking that way... of course i drink when im at the beach so i gain most of it back... but its worth not drinking for a few weeks...

I have a Beck's lite when I come home from work once or twice a week. Then I have 2-3 miller lites on Friday, but none on Saturday or Sunday. The beck's is nice because I guess it contains half the alchohol (2.6% ?). I love the taste of beer, so it works for me. I also homebrew... but since I started running and working out, I feel really guilty every time I have one of my own beers because I am drinking about 200 calories of "liquid fat". I have not had one in over a month. Anyway, I am not trying to rationalize drinking by mentioning Becks... but for those of you who mentioned you liked beer for the taste, it definately works (though like all lite beers it has the watered down taste).

I am brewing another batch this weekend... my friends and relatives are cleaning house on it, so I need to keep up the supply :D . I am actually not sure how many calories are in it. I there there are less in this batch than my first, since I used a mini mash method instead of a whole container of malt extract. I know it hovers around 6% alcohol.

Do you use beersmith or Promash? Those programs tell you calories per 12 oz

*official thread hijack*

what are you brewing? I'm finishing off what was supposed to be a milk stout (turned into a milk brown ale, but its still pretty good :D) and an IPA thats WAY out of balance, good hoppiness, just needs more malty flavor.

Just wanted to jump in and answer someone's question from above- men lose weight faster than women because they have a higher percentage of lean muscle mass. That's just the way it is :(

For every pound of lean muscle mass someone has, they burn 35-50 calories per day. That is in addition to all the exercise they may do. That is for men or women.

But men have more testosterone and therefore able to build lean muscle quicker...AKA- lose weight faster.

Never knew about them and never thought to look. Thanks for the heads up.

I just started and only finished my second batch. Both times I used my local homebrew shop's "West Coast Pale Ale" recipe, since they said it was the easiest. The first was pure malt extract mix and the second was a mini mash.

Also, I had some "Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale" the other day and I think I may mess around with trying to duplicate it next . I see a really BAD batch on the horizon :p Oh well, live and learn. How long have you been homebrewing? I think I may randomly pick a recipe after my pumpkin / pale ale experiment unless you have any recommendations.

Ive been brewing for 3 years. Mostly extract/specialty grains but I have done a little mini-mashing and all-grain. I couldn't tell much of a difference between my extract and AG, so I just stuck with extract..

West coast pale eh, sounds like a Sierra Nevada clone, which is a good thing (my favorite beer to try to recreate, haven't got it quite right yet hehe).

Talk to your homebrew store for some recipes, try making a good hefeweizen or a milk stout for experimentation.
