Dragonfly09's Diary

I just noticed this diary section and thought I'd take the time to start one of my own.

I just wrote an introduction in the introduction area, but I'll go ahead and introduce myself again. My name's Jessica and I'm 17 years old. I'm currently 5'4 and approximatly 150 lbs. My goal weight, as of now, is 130 lbs. So, all in all, I'd like to lose 20 lbs by eating healthy, and being as active as I can.

So, that's the basics right there. For anyone daring enough to read on, here's a bit more 'detailed' of an introduction, including some background information:

I've struggled with my weight since a fairely young age. Unfortunatly, eating became a comfort for me growing up. So, when the going got tough, I ran to the refrigerator. My weight's never been very stable. I've had times in my life where I've been at a normal weight, time where I was a bit too thin, and times where I really needed to lose some weight.

I have hardly an self confidence, and am very uncomfortable with my weight. So, this is a step that I need to take. It's not necessarily about losing weight, but more so learning to take care of myself. By eating healthy, and being healthy, I hope to boost my self confidence and hopefully make changes so that I can like the way I look.

All in all, I just need to take some time right now to focus some energy on myself. Hopefully, by keeping this diary, I'll be able to look at the progress I make, and keep myself on track.

I think that's all I have to share for now, as it's getting late, and I'd hate for the first post of my diary to turn into an incoherent mess!

Welcome!

Hi Dragonfly!

Welcome to the forum! I love your rainbow/pot of gold ticker. It's very cute!

I was really happy to read what you said about wanting to take care of yourself more than just lose weight. That's really really important.

You can do this, and you should do this.

Way to go on making the decision to take care of yourself. You're worth it!

Beth

Hi Beth. :)

Thanks for the supportive post. I am worth taking care of myself, just like everyone else is.

Thanks to all three of you for taking the time to leave a comment. It was nice to wake up to some encouraging comments.

Just thought I'd answer some of these questions:

1. What is your current height and weight? I'm currently about 5'4, maybe 5'4 1/2. I weigh 150 lbs.

2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be? 120 lbs-130 lbs. For my frame, etc that weight range is probably best for me.

3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now? I'd like to be at 130 lbs, possibly a bit lower.

4. Why do you want to lose weight? Well, I'm trying not to focus entirely on weightloss, but more so bettering myself as a person by becoming healthier. To answer the question though, I'd like to lose weight o become healthier and feel more confident about the way I look.

5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event? No specific event.

6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals? A few things I suppose. My biggest threat, is just general sadness. Food is a coping mechanism for me.

7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem? I don't think I have a weight problem. Yes, I'm a bit overweight, but I don't consider myself having a weight problem anymore.

8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight? Becoming a bit more active, and eating better would definatly help me with losing weight.

9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight? Yes, I've lost quite a bit in the past. Healthy eating was the thing that worked the best.

10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back? I gained the weight back due to poor eating habits that hadn't been addressed.

11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work? Well, quite a few things didn't work. Fad diets definatly weren't much help.

12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time? I actualy plan on doing that.

13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook? I do. I adore cooking. For the most part, I also tend to cook rather healthy meals.

14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go? Not that often. I tend to have McDonalds about once a month, and chinese food every few months.

15.What are your three favorite foods? Cantaloupe, toast, and pizza. Those are the three that come to mind as of now.

16. What are your three favorite restaurants? Truthfully, I don't really have a favorite restaurant.

17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food? Eat smaller portions, of better foods, more frequently throughout the day.

18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different? Nothing. I'd be the same person, with the same bad eating habits, and the same issues. Without having to actualy work for the body, none of the things I want to change would change.

19. Do you eat when you are not hungry? Not as often as I use to, but yes.

20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)? Again, not as often/bad as before, but sometimes, yes.

21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret? No.

22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed? Yes.

23. Do you eat as a reward? Definatly.

24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer? Again... yes.

25. What do you normally eat for a meal? When I eat meals, it's usualy a protein, vegetable and starch. I snack more than I have meals though.

26. What type of snacks do you eat? Alot of granola bars, crackers, etc.

27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing? Pilates and daily walking.

28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home? School, just out and about.

29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?I like playing sports like basketball, soccer, and I also enjoy pilates.

30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals? My monthly goal is 5 lbs loss. I'm sure for the first month or so I may lose a tad more than that, but I'll leave it at 5 lbs a month.

31. Do you have rewards for certain goals? I actualy haven't considered any rewards yet. It's a good idea though. Maybe I'll consider some rewards.

Today wasn't the best day. I woke up feeling fine, but was sick for most of the day. I'm feeling ok now, but a bit disappointed that this threw my first day of trying to eat healthy off.

I'd take the time to post what I ate, but I honestly haven't had much, and nothing overly nutritional. So, hopefully this stomach bug or whatever I've caught'll have passed by tomorrow and I can get some more food in.

What I've eaten today:

  • 1 cup grapes - 68 cals
  • 1 packet of oatmeal - 120 cals
  • 1 cup 2% milk - 130 cals
  • 30 olives - 120 cals
  • Large apple - 110 cals
  • Steak - 202 cals
  • Mixed vegetables - 75 cals
  • Potato - 161 cals

Total calorie consumption= 926 calories

Now, before someone mentions the low calorie consumption, allow me to explain. I'm trying my best to keep my calorie consumption between 1200 and 1400 calories. It may take me some time to get my calorie consumption up to that amount. I'm not really use to eating a large amount of food. I'm use to eating junk food though, which adds up quicker than healthy foods.

So, expect a few days or so of me trying to up my calorie count. :)

Also, I weighed 148 lbs this morning. Obviously water weight, but it was encouraging to see a lower number on the scale anyways.

Good attitude. I don't think i had thought about it that way.

Hope you're feeling better. Sounds like you were feeling pretty rough the other day.

I hope you feel better soon! I hate being sick. :(

Also, good luck with the food intake! I'm not a nutritionist or anything but I think you're doing well thus far and you'll only build upon that.

What do you plan on doing for exercise? :)

Hi Sweetie
Just one small thing that I hope may be helpful. I noticed you like to snack on granola bars and crackers. Both of these can be very sneaky about adding to weight gain/preventing loss as the first is often loaded with sugar and the second with salt (think water retention, among other things)! So I suggest that you stick to truly *healthy* snacks like fruit, low fat cheese or low fat cottage cheese, count out some almonds, etc.

Best wishes on your journey! :auto:

Thanks BethR. :) Luckily, I just seemed to be sick from something I ate because it only lasted about 12 hours.

And, I'm not too big on exervising. Lol. I do pilates a couple of times a week, and my daily walking.

Thanks for the tip ABBA. Luckily, after reading the nurtition information on the granola bars, etc. I've realised they're no good. Can't say I'll stay away from them 100%, but I'm definatly going to look at them more as a food I eat every so often as a 'treat' rather than a daily part of my diet.

Thanks again you three. :) I really appreciate the comments/support.

Monday, such a lovely day! Can you sense the sarcasm?

I didn't post yesterday because I was rushing around getting homework put together and finished up before class started back up this morning. Yes, I tend to procratinate things. Not all the time, but fairely often.

Todays food intake:

  • Packet of oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup 2% milk
  • 2 whole wheat peices of bread
  • 2 tbsp Jam
  • A salad from McDonalds (the safest option)

I'll skip out on counting the calories for now. I'm trying to avoid getting to caught up in nutrition facts, etc. Like, I'd like to know the basics and everything but I don't want to make it so that I watch what I consume really closely. I'd like to be healthy, and eat healthy. But I'd also like to enjoy 'bad food' every so often.

I don't have much else to say as of right now. I might post again later, or tomorrow.

Oh, and I'll weight myself again tomorrow to see if anything's changed. I don't expect much but even sut a pound'd be nice (even though it may still be water weight).
