Don't know much about how often/what exercises to do

Hiya,

I'm looking at starting some regular cardio in order to supplement my dieting and weight loss. I live in an apartment that has a very basic gym - treadmill, stairmaster thing, exercise bike, etc.

My problem is, I have very serious pain issues in my left foot as a result of many surgeries. (Details here). I don't swim, so I was thinking the exercise bike might be my best bet. Walking/Jogging on a treadmill is going to be WAY too painful.

My problem is I don't know what kind of time commitment to make to this. I have the time availability to spend 4 hours every single day devoted to this, but I gather one can over-exercise.

I'm 21, I'm 5'3" and I'm currently at 195lbs. Can I get any recommendation as to what kind of time commitment I should make to cardio on the exercise bike?

This isn't hard...

Start somewhere...

Start where you can manage and progress from there -whether it be 5 minutes a day or 20 minutes.. the key is to start... and start with what you CAN and WILL be able to do...

Why on earth do you think 4 hours a day is a good idea?

I never said I thought 4 hours a day was a good idea, I said I had that kind of time. This is why I am asking. I want to know where a healthy limit is. I have the time and the willpower to do 4 hours a day, but I know that isn't a good idea.

So I was hoping someone here could help me draw a line. I want to spend the maximum amount of time -that is reasonable- doing cardio every week. But Ive seen post after post on here with posters telling people they are over-exercising. I don't know where that line is, and I have a buddy in the military telling me 4 hours is fine (I think he's full of shit).

Ive started doing 1 hour every day, simply because I don't have any clue where to start. I am very much capable of doing more. I want input on what is healthy.

Although it is possible to ride a bike for four hours straight... that's not a starting point. You have to find you're starting point. There is no right or wrong with time when you're first starting out. For example, my 323lb friend wanted to jog on the treadmill for 10 minutes. He attempted to do this, and got quite winded 2 minutes in. You've got to find your pace, once you do, and you're exercising regularly, you'll be able to bump it up as you become more fit.
