Does this sound healthy? Advice appreciated!

hi there.

i am brand new to the forum, so hello! i would really appreciate some advice.

last wednesday i started a healthy eating / fitness regime. i am a 5 ft 10" male, 26 years old. last wednesday when i weighed myself I was 80.9kg. Today my weigh in showed 79.5kg.

my objective has been to lose excess weight gained from over eating, to tone up, and get fit. i had a kidney transplant in May last year and one of the steroids does make you hungry, therefore I endulged, but am now unhappy with my weight. my body fat was checked and is too high.

to pull it back down I set a goal of losing 2 pounds p/w and myfitnesspal.com gave me a calorie goal of 1500 per day to achieve this.

my questions are:

1) Does this number of calories sound too low/drastic if I am to maintain my ideal weight over time? (70-75kg)? Before this I would say I was eating easily 3000 + since about September last year, without thinking about it.

2) As I lose weight, like I have this week, should I be increasing my daily calorie count gradually?

I should also point out I am exercising now, as of last Wed, 3 times a week in the morning - interval training cardio for 10 mins then a variety of weights - as instructed by my trainer. my calories are also made up pretty much completely of healthy meals and snacks.

would really appreciate any advice as I don't want to get off on the wrong foot.

thank you.

At 5' 10" and 80 kg (160lbs.) you don't seem over weight so if your issue is that you have a high body fat count and low muscle level then I would focus less on what the scale tells you and more on how you look and feel. The cardio and calorie reduction that you mention will help you reduce your body fat and weights will increase your lean muscles. Since muscle weights more than fat, you may actually gain weight but look and feel much better. That's why I suggest a focus on how you look rather than what the scale tells you.
So the balance is eat healthy and in moderation, do cardio for fat loss and weight training for increased muscle. I will say that 1500 calories seems low if you are doing cardio and weights, it's important to have enough fuel and high quality protein to allow you to achieve your goals. Adjust your calories if you feel tired or are not gaining the muscles that you want, adding a piece of lean meat or a protein shake should do the trick.

1500 cals is too low.
180lbs isnt' that overweight for 5'10" so I suspect you just have low lean muscle mass, and you need to recomposition your body to less fat, more muscle (and possibly a little less total weight).

at 5'10" and your age, you should be able to lose fat eating 2,000-2,200 cals per day, and exercising.
