Does anyone question their reasons for trying to lose weight?

I was just posting on about my motivation to lose weight.

I was saying that a few years back when I was just dabbling in getting fit and healthy my reasons for losing weight were pretty poor, i.e. they had little personal impact. That resulted in pretty bad willpower and we all know how much willpower it takes to lose any weight.

Then I turned a corner, realised that I really wanted to change and that made my reasoning a lot more personal to me. it wasn't that I was trying to bend to societies expectations anymore it was that I'd now started setting my own expectations. As a result the willpower that I've built on this foundation of reasoning has got much better and I'm starting to see the weight come off.

I've still got a long way to go but I just thought I'd pop on and share. Maybe it's a good thing to look at why your trying to lose so that you can get things into better perspective.

1) How nice is it to be able to do simple things, like run for a bus without breaking into a sweat and having your chest bounce like a pair of DDs ?
2) I'm just shy of 18
3) "Sooo... You've lost weight oO" Great to hear :)
4) I only started losing after I met a girl, enough said ?

It's hard sometimes, but there are so many reasons :)

LOL....

I look at it this way, the young 'uns are losing it because of vanity, and the old 'uns are losing it cuz of health.

Vanity - Definitely

I must say, I started off with vanity but as my weight comes off I'm realising theres a whole load more advantages.

You've got to find them for yourself though. I'll not spoil the surprise!

Pretty much it, but to I'm actually sticking to a healthy lifestyle now, I meant to stop by this point originally and just back to old habits.
17 by the way.
Vanity is important to us :) I do find myself a bit condasending, even if I don't say it outloud, to people now, it's one of the easiest things I've done to lose weight, but some people just flat out deny they have a problem even...

Easy?

Pink roses - losing weight easy! I wish.

It's all about the vanity. But then I do wonder about the baggy skin!

I suppose there's always a little nip and tuck available!

It's easy, when you think about it and do it whole heartely :)
Yeah I'm scared about my stomach :( But I'll start trying to pack on some muscle after my holiday, hope that helps :)

I kinda of agree with you. Once you get down to it it's a simple matter of eating well and burning more calories than you eat.

The difficult part is getting over what I call the "activation barrier". That's the bit where you have to motivate yourself to drag your sorry backside to the gym or to prevent yourself from reaching for the snacks etc etc.

Once you are over that and have a good focus on what you're are trying to acheive it does get easier. The next problem comes when you stumble and you have to get back over that activation barrier again!

As for the baggy skin, I've kind of accepted that I may have to have some surgical help to get to the "finished product" but it'll be worth it. Now that definitely is driven by vanity! :)

Exactly :) If we had the motivation to begin with, we would've never been overweight. Now I've been doing it for a few months I'm not eating any junk (Not even a question of willpower now, just habit) and for the next two week HIIT daily, I can't complain since I love it.
Shame some people never feel like this :( It's an amazing feeling!

My entire immediate family.....father, mother and 2 YOUNGER brothers all died from abusing/neglecting their health. Bad diet, smoking, too much alcohol, drugs, etc.......it (ie heart attacks, diabetes, cancer) finally caught up to them in the end. That's enough motivation for me.

That would be enough motivation for me too.

HIIT daily for 2 weeks. I'm thinking your High isn't high enough if you can manage that! Good luck to you though.

Yeah ... It's difficult for me, it really is, I've been trying to do 25mins (5 is a warmup) 30on, 60rest, and I'm failing to feel tired by 25mins, even if I'm dripped in sweat and maxing out the machines for those 30s :s Any idea what to do in that case ?

It's all about the vanity, baby. :rotflmao:
Well, health then vanity. ;)

Until about a month ago, I'd been overweight all my life.
Right now, I'm "healthy" but I'm right at the top end of the scale!
I've never been slim before, ever. I just want to get down there and be healthy while I'm doing it! Change of lifestyle - none of those faddy diets..

My ticker says 130 but, of course, I'd settle for 140. :D

Hugs to all, good luck!

1.) My health
2.) My wedding in three years. I don't want to look like the Mashmellow Puff Girl walking down the aisle.
3.) My self esteem.
4.) Wanted to be able to shop in a store and be able to find my size and look good in what I wear.

To Pinkroses -
Mix it up a bit. If you usually do HIIT on a stationary bike then do it on the rowing machine for a while. Switch it around so that you challenge different parts of the body. Crank up the resistance and speed if you can too. Don't go mad otherwise you'll injure yourself. The other thing is buy a heart rate monitor and figure out your Max HR. If you've already got a HR monitor then use it well. Make sure on you High intensity intervals you a pushing up above the 90% max HR mark.
I'm no athlete but I do 5mins warm up, 30 on, 60 off and I am shattered after 6cycles. I still think that your high is not high enough.

Do I question my reasons?

No, never have. For me it has always been about health and being able to do things like everyone else, from romance to roller coasters.

The biggest thing I question now, is why it took 20 damn years to finally do it.

sirant

Same for me Sirant, I wish I had done this last year when it dawned on me I had the time to devote myself to losing weight *sigh*.
I never do the same machine for HIIT twice in a row ;)

It's a mix of vanity and health but health wins out. I want to eat vegetables instead of being a vegetable.

Vanity is winning out today!

I've just put a pic on and it's definitely vanity that is winning out for me today.
