Does anyone else climb up and down stairs for exercise

I do it 1/2 hour a day, five days a week. The stairwell is in my office building, and I exercise after work. I go 4 flights up, 4 flights down, etc., etc. My heart rate remains elevated, and I'm always plenty tired when I'm finished, so I'm thinking this is working for me.

I'm wondering how many calories I'm burning doing this. Also wonder if any of you have done this exercise long term, and experienced any adverse effects (e.g., knee injuries). Any thoughts and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I walk stairs when I go on my walks around the hospital and I hit a friends stairmaster anytime I'm near his house. How many calories? Who knows, it depends on your weight, metabolism, intensity of workout. It does burn a good many. According the rough calculation on the stair machine I use, 30 minutes on level 4 of the fat burner workout burns approx 350 calories for my weight.

Its pretty low impact, so I don't think you would see any more joint problems from walking stairs than just walking. Maybe it stresses your hips a little more? I'm not sure

I do stairs in my house if the weather is bad outside (im a fair weather runner lol)

Its really good as not only are you burning calories but you are building and toning the muscles in your legs/bum.

Although after 30 minutes my legs feel like jelly :D

I've gone up and done the stairs in my house for exercise. But I haven't really kept up with it, do it every once in a while. But it should definitely help with getting or keeping in shape. I know alot of athletes do it. Don't know about the joint problems. But just be careful and don't work yourself too hard. :)

That is an excellent idea! My gym membership is on hold until the first of the year and I have been looking for alternate exercise routines around the house...Thanks for the idea;) .

stairs can be great as with the change in height you are working on conditioning your legs aswell as any weight loss, respiritory and cardiovascular benefits too

i wouldnt worry about your kness unless you are jumping down flights of stairs and landing badly :p

its not a bad start to use stairs, as they are simple enough and u can find them anywhere, if you want to see any serious visible benefits then i suggest increasing the amount you do every so often, either go faster or go further

definately beats the arse off regular walking

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I try to push myself a little harder on MW&F, and I seem to be getting a benefit. Well, sort of, I never had much of a butt to begin with, and now it's completely gone, so I'm dealing with saggy pants. :p

haha great stuff! :D

keep it up :)

I recently started a new job in an old victorian house... it has 6 floors and several staircases lol. And I am up and down them all day... I'm sure the job alone will shed a few pounds.
