Does anyone do Yoga? Pilates?

I was just wondering if anyone does yoga or pilates frequently and if they've noticed any real benefits to doing them regularly. I've seen infomercials for various yoga and pilates inspired workouts but I was just curious if anyone in real life does either of them and has seen any noticeable results.

I'd love to get into either of them but I wasn't sure about the effect they would have on weightloss, and I'm sorry if I've spelled 'Pilates' horribly, horribly wrong :(

Thanks!
Ellie

Yoga is very good for strength, flexibility and can assist with weight loss but you do need to start slow or risk injury.

I've tried two 90 minute hot yoga classes, and though I found them enjoyable, can't speak to their effectiveness because of the short time frame. However, I can't recommend pilates highly enough. The exercises are very basic and very effective. I bought some DVDs (Windsor Pilates, I think?) years ago and just by doing the 20 minute work out 3x per week saw huge results. My posture is great, my abs are tight and tucked in, everything just seems longer and leaner... and your flexibility will become crazy! They're easy to do from home or in a class.

I think I probably have those same videos! I'll have to start putting them to use then. Good flexibility also sounds like a plus too.
Thanks for your advice!
I'll let you know how it turns out!

Re: yoga

Hello Ellie,
Hope you are doing good.

Yoga is a lifelong beneficial science but just to caution you , if you are looking for any fast and quick way of losing weight then yoga is not the way. Yoga will take months and even a year for you to see results. But Yoga definitely it is the answer to weight loss and many other diseases which otherwise in medical world have no cures for.

Here is a link for you which you might find useful perhaps.

Don't pay attention to some of the claims about cancer and AIDS on the site but otherwise in India , he is a big name and thousands of people follow him. His exercises are very effective.

You can even see his free videos on youtube or metacafe.
Hope you find something useful. :)

Yoga is Great...

for strength, balance and flexibility. It also depends on the type of yoga you practice, some are more focused on flexibility (Hatha) and others are more focused on a faster pace and the flow of the movements (Ashtanga).

For me, it's great to add to your regular workout routine to remain flexible, relaxed, and get rid of the kinks from a gym workout. However, I do agree it should not be the only exercise you engage in if you are seeking to lose weight quickly.

I used to take yoga classes through my gym regularly, but I haven't been in a while. Just this morning I got up 15 mins early and went through the floor stretching routine that is similar to what we used to do in class - I picked it up from online somewhere.

Honestly, it felt GREAT. I'd forgotten how good I feel after finishing a session. I am definitely going to be doing this on a regular basis in the morning. I am not a morning person and getting up early to run or lift isn't going to happen, but I can swing getting out of bed 15 mins early to stretch and wake up.
