Does all cardio really cut fat?

I see all these late night infomercials for silly looking cardio tapes and accessories, (like people bouncing slightly on a trampoline) does all cardio really cut fat for these women? Or should they really get some weight training in there (and a healthier diet) to lose fat?

Turn the TV off.

Like you, I hardly watch the television - otherwise I would be less shocked by such scams. However, I'd appreciate it if you would give serious answers to a serious question, which was very much a question of cardio versus weight training, (specifically for fatloss), than a joke, or even a question on television as it relates to fitness.

Actually, his statement (while being half way joking) was dead on. The problem is to many people are sitting around thinking about not being over-weight and not doing anything about it.

What more people need is activity, (sure they need resistance training and cardio) but if they'd just get up off teh couch and become more active, it'd make a huge difference.

So, does that cardio burn fat? Maybe, it'd be hard to know without knowing the trainee, the activity, teh time, and etc

My statement was DEAD on serious. You may think it was a joke but it wasn't. Actually my belief is that most misconceptions in the diet/fitness world stems from TV. Most of everything you see on TV is based on something that someone is trying to sell so they are going to tell you anything (true or false) in order for you to purchase whatever it is they are selling.

1. Do not believe anything you watch on TV about diet/fitness without doing your own research on the net or by reading books.

2. If your goal is to burn fat you need to figure out your calorie requirement in order to do so. If you don't know how to figure this out, shoot me an email at admin@itransformed.com and I will be more than happy to provide you with a spreadsheet based on the Benedict formula. This will give you a great place to start.

3. Cardio is optimal for fat loss however if combined with weight training and proper diet, your results will come much more quickly. But this is all based on your goals.

4. Post your current diet (include the time of day the meals are consumed, your stats, and your goals) in the nutrition forum. This will help us get a feel for what your current status is and also assist us in giving you advice on how to get to your goal status.

I hope this elaborates on what I meant in my first post.

Suppose you mainly lay around. Then, you do one of these small activities that you see on an infomercial. You will be adding activity, thereby burning some calories.

Of course, to burn fat and increase muscle, you need to seriously increase the heart rate/resting metabolism. You have to work pretty hard.

If someone wants to do the Urban Rebounder or one of those pedally things, why not? It's not a be all and end all, but it's a start! It's certainly better than lying around and snacking.

the more muscle you have, the more carbs you burn every day without doing anything, but dont rely on just that so do cardio training, you just need to burn more than you eat to loose weight.

also, what i usually say is; dont listen to people who want to sell something. if you are looking for facts about something, see independant stuff, like research articles and these forum threads ;)

Anything that says "According to ONE study..." is a bunch of crap. If it worked, it would work anytime. They just manipulate the variables so that in a certain study their product comes out looking good.

Yeah you guys are right.

When a new (scam) product comes out it always says, "And now for only $99.99 you can get this great machine, it fits in a small box, shapes and tones, builds muscle, burns fat and you only have to use it for 20mins every day!!!!!"

If there was such a magic thing that was $99.99 and burned fat and build muscle well, then there wouldnt be gyms. Everyone in the world would have one of them and they would look great.

On a comical note, there was this swill ball and book on sale on the TV and the advert said that it...
"Tones your shoulders, arms and delts"

I couldnt believe that anyone selling a fitness product could be so very veyr dumb.
For anyone who doesnt know, your delts are your shoulders.

What do you mean?

I thought barbell shrugs while standing on top of a swiss ball works great!

No no no...you lift the ball over your head, and the wide grip it provides really targets your shoulders. Geez

haha

Actually, I think some of you need to do your research about the benefits of rebounding. It is one of the best forms of cardio for fat loss that you can do AND not only do you get a great low impact cardio workout, you get the benefit of building muscle too. Don't knock it until you try it. I do not have an Urban rebounder, but I do rebound. It has actually become my favorite for doing cardio and you will loose fat. However, I do believe that you need to also incorporate diet and weight training. Personally I have lost 25 lbs in 2 months rebounding, but I also eat a healthy diet and weight train.

No not all cardio burns fat. Most cardio does burn fat but some also can eat up valuable muscle. HIIT is a great form of cardio that is more efficient and can more effectivley burn fat. Long steady state cardio tends to eat up your energy reserves and tap into some of that muscle that many people work real hard for.

Ding ding ding. There is what the infomercial doesnt announce. Anything that gets them off the couch will help them lose weight.
