Do you think the Yoga is useful for weight loss?

I have been stretching daily for many years and can even do the splits. And I am a MAN! I am certain that it will have absolutlely no effect on weight loss except some subtle effects on the most extreme cases (over 150 lbs overweight) and even then not much. But it will help recoup from exercise giving you better results faster or make you less prone to injury, possibly even make you more flexable but not drop weight. sorry.

Hi,

I personally enjoy all the benefits to yoga. It's a nice balance on the off days when I'm not training. I first started ashtanga yoga about 2 yrs ago through a class. I liked the instructor, so started making it a habit. She's been practicing various forms of yoga for 10 years and her frame is very petite and muscular, built like a ballerina. Nice, I'd like to eventually get to the same build. She was still doing yoga during her pregnancy and post pregnancy - she went back to her pliable physique in less than 6 weeks.

Anyway, when I first went for yoga, I found it gave me subtle definition on my arms and legs in just a few short weeks, (great for muscle strengthening, toning, and maintanence) but I don't think this would be a pointer for losing fat directly. Indirectly maybe, as you think of any constant fluid movement will burn calories/fat. I don't think yoga is a negative in any way but for ultimate fat loss, I understand now that nutrition is 80-something % of one's success. I'm trying to achieve some visible muscle gain but mostly my aim is to get lean. I use yoga to serve as an enhancer on days I don't lift/run so as to keep my muscles conditioned. I also like yoga because it relaxes my tension. Just remember, the more active muscle tissue you build, such as lifting or resistance training, the more you raise your BMR on the whole. :)

I know an experienced yoga teacher; she's fat. But that's besides the point. The point is it will only help you in the long run. It will also clear your gas bladder, be aware.

Whoops, the question was, "Do you think yoga is useful in weight loss?" Yes, I think it is. It will be very useful when coupled with diet and other various forms of exercise. If you keep to the two methods mentioned, you can either do yoga or do without it-- it will only help, but if you're not feelin it then go ahead and do something else.
