Do You Do Pullups?

do "assisted" pullups/chinups. Either find a low bar, use a chair, or they have machines that can help you.

be careful hanging there for too long, it's not good on your shoulders, or wrists, if the muscles aren't developed. when you feel the stress point- like grip,, stop and work to develop that element.

actually-- some females will respond....

take care of your body,, don't sacrifice it to do pullups.......

Try:
1. weighted negatives;
2. assisted pull-ups;
3. light lat pulldown.

Remember to also work on strengthening your: lats, chest, biceps, triceps, forearms and shoulders and you will be doing them in no time.

I forget what the figure is, but for every so many pounds you lose you can do an additional amount of pull-ups. So, if you are trying to lose weight, this is a good opportunity to work harder at it.

What would you suggest for a person who is new for pull ups/chin ups if they can't even do one full one!?

DW guys, i got confused on something. I do over hand chin - ups in my workout and yes, do the negative phase slowly, the slower the negative, the greater the hypertrophy. When you know that you won't be able to get yourself up for any more, do the eccentric phase of the last one as slow as you can.

I disagree with you on this one, streamline. If i'm not mistaken, it has been proven that along with concentrics, the eccentric phase has to be performed fast for maximal motor unit recruitment. Of coarse this phase has to be controlled, but it also has to be quick.

so what do i do? my legs are against my bum and my grip is narrow and my finger nails are facing towards me, is that is chin up? i find this alot easier than i wide grip were my nails are facing the other way, i can only manage to do about 3 of them.

Nails pointed away from you is a PULLUP.

Watch your arm muscles when you're pulling yourself up. Then you can tell what muscles you're really working. But yes, pull-ups work your shoulders, triceps and forearms, and a little bicep as well.

Chin ups work your biceps, forearms, and a few others (i mostly do pullups, not chin ups, although I may start doing them...pullups on every workout for weeks on end gets a little boring:))

During a long period of contraction, the motor units are activated on a rotating basis, that is, some of them will be contracting and some of them will be resting and then it cycles through again. This happens because the muscle fibres have used up their available energy. So, yes what you're saying is correct in that if you do it fast then more motor units will be recruited simultaneously, but doing it slowly will still stimulate all of the motor units.

Good post.

That's the reason the guys that knock out 40 chins in the weight room are all 6' and 130 pounds soaking wet lol

Pullups is my least favourite exercise.
Chinups is my most favourite exercise.

I do 3x7 chinups.
I do 3x6 pullups, but never finish the last 3 reps of the last set ><

Because I do them in really good form, and go down ALL the way, unlike 99% of people (nobody here I'm sure, but go on youtube and....), and hence I find the most difficult part of the pull-up, is when you need to start the next rep, and you have to pull yourself up from scratch all over again. Not going down the full way would make it a hell of a lot easier, but that's cheating.

i do 8x3 for pullups with added weight

Bastard!!! :yelrotflmao:

Mind sharing some knowledge of how to improve in pullups? I never get any improvement in pullups....like none. I get better at everything else, get better at chinups - but never pullups. I just hate that exercise so much ><

I totally understand this feeling. I got a hint from Men's fitness a couple of months ago that helped start gettign more reps, and feeling better about the exercise. at the top hold for a few seconds, and squeeze the blades to gether. I can actually feel the heat build back there.

thank you for making the full hang comment. it is true and I also have tried to keep them that way.

yes. At the up end,,, all the way up... think squeeze, spell it in your mind, s.q.u.e.e.z.e. and then release to full hang,,, it got me from being able to do 4 or 5 FULL pull-ups to 17 as a PR. I just wanna get 25 good ones one day.
