do upright rows hurt?

is doing upright rows bad for me. someone told me that they are bad for your shoulders. i hope not because they are great mass builders for me.

The jury is still out on the upright row.

Some coaches never do them while others prescribe them if the trainee doesn't experience any discomfort.

They are a very good excercise for body composition but i would tread lightly with them. Personally i stopped using them due to shoulder strains from heavy lifting in general.

I've been told by orthopedists and physical therapist to not do them. It puts the rotator cuff at a bad angle which when loaded is damaging to the tendons.

i'd say its based on form, if u start to feel aching, u must be doing it wrong, &
u need to be aware if your body is hurting. thats bout it.

Upright rows are an extreme internal rotation of the humerus. Every rep brings the shoulder into the risk of impingment.

However, it's up to you to decide if you want to do them or not.

i always get an uncomfortable pain on the inner part of the bicep, ive been considering stopping them and i think i now will.

what are the best alternatives to this?

I came up with the best idea for you people with bad shoulders.

Do upright rows... on the SMITH MACHINE!!!

I've been doing this for some time now. I first started off doing upright rows on the smith until i got used to them, then i started doing them FREEWEIGHT.

This is a very good way to do upright rows, but NOTE**:

When switching from smith to freeweight, CUT OFF AT LEAST 25% of the normal weight that you do. For ex. if you do 12 pounds usually on the smith, start off at 5 pounds on freeweight and gradually go up to 10. If not, your shoulder will pop out and your babies will be deformed.

thats probley why i have been injured for the past 5weeks with shoulder/trap injury and havnt been able to weight train in those 5weeks. when i return i wnt be doing upright rows no more thats for sure!

An upright row is an upright row regardless of whether it's on a machine or with a barbell. They're still bad for the shoulders. So, again...an upright row=an upright row.

But on the smith machine, you don't even get a natural plane of movement.
