Do runners weigh more than non-runners?

I ask because I am sick of BMI's and other measures telling me I am obese. I am 5'3" female and weigh between 134-136lbs. I run 15-25 miles a week on avearage. I wear a size 7 pant and am a 36 C. I can't lose any more. I have tried. I cut calories to less than 1000 but that leaves me dizzy after a few weeks and I still don't lose. I am considering starving off muscle...I should (according to the AMA) weigh about 119. Any suggestions?

First suggestion.... don't put such a heavy emphasis on the BMI tables! Why would you let that dictate how you feel about yourself? If you are physically fit, and it sounds like you are, who cares what you are classified as. The majority of bodybuilders are labeled "obese" by BMI standards.... do you think they are walking around fretting?

Secondly, I bet you could lose some more fat if you dieted properly. Cutting more and more calories is not the answer, at all! The answer is very small caloric deficits coupled with lots of aerobic exercise to burn the fat off and weight training to maintain as much muscle as possible. Of course, the food you are eating really matters too!

I have found that most people who claim that they have tried "everything" usually have not each scratched the surface when it comes to healthy, natural, permanent fat loss.

Do you know you basal metabolic rate. Do you know your maintenance caloric intake. Do you know how many calories you are consuming each day? What are you eating?

what I eat

My BMR is 1390, to maintain it's around 2000, and I eat around 1400 a day. I am a vegetarian, that eats dairy and eggs. I am a very healthy eater, all my #'s at the docs are incredible. I rarely eat anything fried. Mostly whole, raw foods, no butter, no oil. Typical day: 2 egg whites and a piece of multigrain toast, protein bar for snack, cup of soup and salad or vegetable for lunch, rice and vegetables for dinner. I snack on shredded wheat, bananas, and chips and salsa when needed. I try to eat every three hours. I break these things up and don't necessarily eat a whole 'meal' I am a grazer. What do you think?

First off, stroutman81 is right. BMI means nothing. They don't account for muscle mass. A bodybuilder would be considered obese even though he or she may be in unbelievable condition.

What's your bf %? Do you lift weights consistently? Try reading this article for women and weight lifting.

From your posts, you seem to be in great shape. Your diet appears fine to say the least. You're probably given a false consensus of what is healthy by the AMA.

bodyfat

I don't really know how to tell my bodyfat. I don't have access to the cool submersion method, my bodyfat scale says 9-11% but that can't be right because i know that women are supposed to be above 13. HOwever, if you pinch me, there really isn't much anywhere except my chest--I'm pretty solid and my friends always say "your are ripped". I don't want to be a bodybuilder type girl, but I do lift weights and do strength training. I workout with 10 lbs weights and the cool 'ball' that everyone had nowadays. I just want to weigh 115 like normal women my height.

I wouldn't worry about your weight so much, it is simply because of the muscle that you have, and that is not a bad thing. That extra muscle actually helps you keep your weight lower than if you were to starve it off because muscle increases your bodies metabolism which allows you to break down foods and fats faster. If you were to starve off that muscle, it would convert into fat (to be able to use it as energy) and then you would need to work to get that fat off, and your metabolism would be slower.

You sound like you are in prime physical condition, maybe run a few more miles a week and stretch a lot :) But don't worry.

thanks

Thanks for the info
I am going to try to add some miles, I have switched up the weight routine and I am going to have my body fat and my measurements taken. Maybe this is just 'my' weight. I just want to make sure that I am doing everything I can...I gained 50 lbs in college and didn't realize it....I just don't want that to happen again. :)

If your trying your hardest, what else can you ask from yourself. You are what you are. Eat healthy, exercise, and feel good about yourself. And guess what, you sound like someone I would like to run by sometime.:) or all the time:)
