Dizzy and kind of scared, please advice?

Hi everyone, I have not been on my diet very long but I have been having some nasty dizzy spells. Seems like I have some experts here so I would like some advice.

Let me give you my SPECS. I am 30 years old 6'2 and started at 311 LBS, (weight last thursday).

My diet started this last thursday I have cut down to around 1600-1800 calories a day and work out very hard for about 30 minutes a day. I have been trying to keep up with water by doing about 8 glasses a day... by the looks of my shirt after working out I get rid of that pretty quick.

After my workout on Saturday I weighed 301.. thats 10 LBS in 3 days... water weight but still, is that too much?

I am having bouts of random dizziness that come up like a wave. Usually after standing up or bending over to pick something up. Did I cut to many calories? I had to grab the wall awhile ago because I felt like the room was spinning. I had a yogurt and feel a little better... could I be having blood sugar issues?

Will my body eventually adjust to this?

need a little help

Hi Big Guy :)

How many calories are you eating? It's hard to say without knowing whether you're getting enough food.

As for dizziness, that can be an array of causes and it's best to just see a doctor about it.

But if you get better by eating something, maybe you're a little bit anemic. I know that I get dizzy sometimes and it's because of my anemia. I eat something and feel better.

But again, go see a doctor, to be absolutely sure.

Hope this helps.

EDIT, oops, oh sorry, I read pretty fast and didn't see your calories.

It's hard to pinpoint because every person is different.

If I get dizzy, it's normally because I'm dehydrated, my sugar is low, or because I haven't eaten in awhile...or sometimes a combination of all three. So I drink lots of water, eat a small piece of candy, or grab a snack to eat...that usually fixes it.

But that's just me...

At 311 lbs, your maintenance calories should be around 4600.

And let's see .. you say you cut down to 1600? So you cut almost 70% off your daily intake? Yeah, I'd be dizzy and sick, too, if I cut out 70% of my eating then started working out very hard.

Ideally you only want to reduce your calories by 20% to 30% at a time. So right now, you should probably be eating at LEAST 3200 calories in order to lose weight. AS you lose more weight, you can begin lowering that amount by 10% here and 10% there.

But starving yourself, as I think you're finding out, is not the healthy way to do this.

Hi Big Guy
I would advise you to go to the doctor to ask about the cause of dizziness you feel would be better for you
I wish you good health

I agree with Kara - I'd say a possible reason that you're dizzy is that you aren't eating enough.

I started at 311 lbs too, and initially set myself on a calorie budget of 2600. Later I dropped that to 2200, once I was on track and had a good handle on things. I'm also older and shorter than you are, so you probably need even more calories than me just to keep yourself going.

The trick is not to starve yourself, but actually to eat as much as you can while still losing weight.

It could also be other things, like blood sugar levels (are you hypoglycemic?), or maybe you have cut something out of your diet and your body is adjusting to its absence. For instance, a lot of people who cut out caffeine will feel that way until their body adjusts.

It might also be a reaction to unaccustomed levels of exercise. I don't know what you mean by "working out very hard for 30 minutes", but maybe you are starting off too intense? I am merely speculating.

I would suggest increasing your food intake and see if the dizziness goes away. If it doesn't - go to the doctor.

Thanks for your replys :)

I am going to up my caloric intake... to a healthy range 2000-2200 or so. Hopefully that will help. I am going to make sure that absolutely everything that I eat is of benefit to my energy and well being to.

The dizziness goes away when I eat something, even small it seems. I want to listen to my body and do this the right way.

Live Well,

Really, you need to see a doctor if you haven't dizziness or not. Anybody should who begins an exercise program. You don't want random guesses to be your guiding light, I don't think.

Up your water intake to a minimum of 1/2 your body weight in ounces. Exercising is releasing toxins in your body and they are obviously (you say by the look of your shirt) being released when you exercise. If you are releasing more toxins than your current water intake can handle then you will definitely feel the effects of the toxins staying in your body. Any time you start a new program you will feel the effects. A check up is always a good idea to be sure your heart can handle the exercise. Don't forget, that if you have been seditary for a while, your circulation is catching up with you. Give it time. Balance your water and add some potassium so your body can process the water. You set big goals for yourself and your body is resisting change. Here's to your health!:cheers2:

hey big guy. i admire your take on weight loss (life gain) is just as much about your mentality as it is about your diet/exercise. If it were as easy as changing your eating habits (sounds simple) obesity wouldn't be such a problem. You sound to me like your so in control, like you have a very healthy mindset. I admire that and strive to adopt it within myself.

Getting dizzy is probably not a good thing. Perhaps you are overly-motivated? A bigger person+being a man means that you need more calories. Try adding more healthy fat/calories to your diet. For somone your size you may need like 2500 or so, but I'm not an expert. As for losing 10 pounds in three days, I'm almost 100 pounds less and I've done that in a week but in a very unhealthy way. Like you said, it may just be water weight. Good for you and it sounds like you have all the tools to succeed in your, um, life gain :) -Miriam
