disordered eating vs. eating disorder

A few words from a counsellor, Janice. "Disordered eating refers to an irregular, chaotic eating pattern, ...when a person has disordered eating he/she is not listening to the normal hunger and satiety signals from his/her body. Instead the person uses external controls to decide what and when to eat. It is usual for a person with disordered eating to have a negative view of his/her body and to be preoccupied with appearance, food and weight.

On the other hand, eating disorders come under the medical model and are medical diagnoses used when a person has severe weight and shape concerns and demonstrates weight control behaviours that are extreme. Disordered eating precedes and is an aspect of an eating disorder.

that describes me. 2 weeks ago i lost 10lbs and got down to 9st. Then on one sunday i reached out for cadbury fingers and continued to eat and eat for hours non stop. God i hate myself for that. Its not even like im craving the food, I just eat. i put on 15lbs in 2 weeks. really down now. I need help. I feel too low about myself to step out the house.

If there is something psychological going on, that is one thing.

However, assuming there is not, planning your eating schedule can do wondrous things. I, for instance, have pages and pages of spread sheets with meals written out on them. There is a column for the food that the meal will contain, another for each of the macronutrients that are found in the food, calories, servings, etc.

Then, each Saturday, I go through my meal options and decide what and when I am going to eat this week. From there, I head to the grocery store and buy what I need. There is no guess work, and I am set in stone with the schedule. I would never even think to eat outside of the schedule, not because I am crazy.... but because my subconscious mind automatically adheres to the schedule I have laid out.

Food planning and preparation is the key to dietary adherence IMO.

yea food planning does really help alot, if you have all your meals planned it doesnt leave junk food as any sort of option

Hi, Steve! Do you have a digital version of your light recipes. I am very interested.

Thanks in advance!

kanjoos86 putting 15lbs on in 2 weeks suggests you have been binging - is this an eating pattern you have used before?

At 9 stone you do not appear to have a significant weight problem - even with plus 15lbs unless you are 4 ft tall you are not obese. So the question then becomes what caused you to start eating the cadburys fingers and even more interestingly what kept you eating??

What purpose is the food serving for you?

Meal plans are very useful but I suggest that no meal plan would have prevented you from this binge because the binge was serving a purpose. Please don't feel you have to answer these questions on the forum but I do urge you to think about them because it will help you to understand your behaviour. Once you understand it you can start to work on changing it. I have found that hypnotherapy and or psychotherapy really help our clients to address these issues - you might like to look into trying these therapies - practitioners can be found almost everywhere so some local ones to you should be easy to find.

Finally you say you feel too low to leave the house. You need to grasp some control back. Force yourself to go to the shop to buy a healthy meal - you may not eat it but if you have it then your chances of choosing to eat it suddenly improve.

You're in a tough place right now....wishing you all positive things to help you get out of it.

Good post.

Interesting thread. Something I have noticed since beginning to lose weight is that I no longer eat out of boredom. If I was watching TV I would have a snack in the evening even if I was not hungry.

This has kind of gone to extremes now where I am completely forgetting to eat. It is certainly not a conscious decision to not eat but my mind seems to have shifted in to a place where I do not get any satisfaction from eating anymore. I think it might be due to what I now buy at the supermarket. There is nothing in my fridge that is easy to snack on... maybe apples but everything else requires some preparation and there is nothing that is processed.

I have made it very difficult for myself to eat and as a consequence I either dont have the time to or I dont crave anything that is in my fridge. It is a weird feeling sitting here knowing that there is nothing in my house that I want to eat... usually my fridge would be bulging with all sorts of badness.

I always have something in the morning, usually a frozen banana blended with some fresh strawberries, non fat natural yogurt and whey protein. In the afternoon if work is not too hectic I will go grab a subway or something like that. In the evening I might have another smoothy like the morning meal or if I am feeling hungry I will cook something like fish and a sweet potato.

I feel like I have gone from one extreme to another... I just dont enjoy food anymore and dont have any cravings for anything. I used to plan out all of my meals for the week and then shop accordingly but I find it difficult now to eat unless I am hungry so I would be cooking dinner or lunch and forcing myself to eat it which I couldnt do.

I dont think its psychological as if I get hungry I certainly do eat but I am probably not eating as much as I should be right now to be honest. I am sure it is just a phase and will pass.
