Dismal and discouraged...

Warning: Feminine issues!! (Just putting that out there for squeamish guys...)

So anyway, I'm PMSing and I've gained roughly five pounds since I started, even though I've been to the gym almost every day for at least half an hour, doing both intense cardio and weight training.

I can tell I'm still losing weight in my face, stomach, and hips (not to mention gaining nice new biceps) but the scale has jumped back up from 179 to 183, and I'm not losing any inches, either.

I did skip going to the gym on Saturday and Sunday (because I was pretty miserably ill), but I've still been pretty good about watching what I eat. Haven't been as good on drinking water this weekend, though.

Has anyone else experienced sudden weight gain during PMS? PLEASE tell me this crap is temporary, because I'm temporarily discouraged. :(

It's pretty normal...

What you might want to do (and there are online programs that will do this for you as well ) but keep a spreadsheet with your daily weight and you'll see how it does fluctuate based on your menstrual cycle...

Maverick:

I like you, ive read your posts for the last few months.

So I'm a bit boggled by the post.

Here's the skinny. Humans aren't just fat deposits. I know you know this scientifically.

People carry and retain water/waste that can fluctuate your weight anywhere from 4-10 lbs.

If you think youve gained 5 lbs of fat during a cycle...and let's assume it's been 5 days...that means youve been eating in excess of 3500 calories a day. In the real world due to carb conversion, it would really have to be 4000.

Have you been eating 6500-7000 calories a day for the last 5 days? I doubt it.

So you know it is water and/or colon/intestine weight. More the former 9 out of 10. Why sweat it?

Michael

Thanks, guys.

I do understand that it's probably just a fluctuation (water retention, like you said, is probably the culprit--I've felt pretty bloated the last few days), but it's still rough on a girl to really, really bust her butt in the gym almost every single day and see a steady weight gain instead of a loss.

I think maybe I just lost too much weight too quickly in the beginning of my program, and it set me up for a knockdown.

I have to lose about twenty-five to thirty pounds by next May, as well as reach a pretty serious level of physical training. And I'm a lazy ass who is still relatively out of shape, so it's pretty intimidating. I know that's a LONG time to work on a fitness regiment and I should be able to reach my goals no problem, but I'm putting a LOT of faith in myself to be able to do this.

I'm not filling out scholarships for grad school, or the Peace Corps, or doing any other preparations for when I leave college in the spring. This military thing is pretty much do or die, so I guess I kind of panicked when I saw that I'm inching closer and closer to my starting weight. If I don't hit at LEAST 160, I don't get in.

So chalk the dismayed post up to hormones and a sudden bout of end-of-university panic, I guess. Life-altering decisions make me irrational. It must be the female in me. :D

I know it'll turn around eventually. Thanks for the support in the meantime.

That's b/c you are using a flawed metric to measure success.
