difference between lifting at home, and at a gym.

I have a bench at home, and it seems like i dont have as much intensity and strength as I do in a gym...my benching is about 10 pounds difference, so is my overall strength. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Yep, it's pretty much psychological. It's harder to phyche myself up at home than it is at the gym, plus, there's no one around that's putting you to shame, so there's no additional motivaion as far as competition goes.

What I find myself doing at home is doing a set or two, then going and getting lost at the comp or around doing chores...while at the gym all I can do is sit around and wait till it's my turn again.

It's easy enough to defeat. Just sit down, block everything else out, and focus.

I disagree. It's alot easier at home you can use the equipment whenever you want and take the proper/your preferred rest periods in between sets. I don't find it hard getting myself in a mindset for lifting.

RandyRhoads -
Whats your bench like? Is it the same quality as at the gym. Does your bar weight the same, and have your weighed your weights???

I like working out at home...since my gym has no bumper plates, I can drop the weights in the backyard and not worry about getting evil eyes from dropping a snatch...of course considering my gym is on teh second floor of the Welness Center.

no gyms around here. there are those "health spa" type places with tanning booths and hair salons inside. nah, not for me cause thats not a gym. plus the time it takes to get over there would screw with my schedule

i lift in a very small room in the house plus do some stuff out in the yard.

Randy - I think you answered your own question. you put more weight on at home, cos the bar is lighter, so your lifting the same.

I like going to the gym. My gym in inbetween work and home so its easy to go every day.
Its nice to have somewhere away from home and work where you go to train. And you do nothing else there so your not destracted. I think I'd get misdirected if I worked out at home. Plus its nice to have a spotter.

heres a Q. How much money hav you guys spent on home equipment?

do you buy more stuff as you go, or do you have what you need and thats that?

I do wonder about buying my own stuff. I have to room but there is so much I want. When I add up all the equipment I feel i need, it would end up costing 3years gym membership.

Well all i got is Dumbells and a bench (the bench has a leg curl on it) and that's all i need. Plus a treadmill. I didn't pay for any of this btw but the final cost would be somewhere around 1000 - $1500

I buy and accumulate throughout the years. That cost was adding in things like resistance bands, weight equipment, punching bag, other various weights, etc.

It depends if you think it's worth it. I have most of this stuff because I don't have a gym membership, a martial arts school, or enough time when I do get around weights. If you get enough of what you need from the gym and your school, then I don't see why you would need any of this, but if you are insatiable in your quest for iron and things to hit/practice on, then by all means.

Well, I work out at home. I ewas going to go to the gym at my school, but I got scared and sorta....embarassed and decided that I couldn't go.

i have a power rack ($299), a bench($149) and an olympic bar(???). plus a treadmill, a stationary bike and a smith machine. i just bought a trap bar ($190) and i'm gonna buy some farmers walk bars later on.

i have a couple 45 pound weights, some 25 pounders and of course 5's, 10's, 2.5's and some 1 pound collars

I haven't spent much. I collected my tractor tire for free. I was given my keg. My cement plates were given to me. Oh, I did pay for the bench, it was about $40. I have some paint buckets converted to farmers walks that were left here from previous maintenence done on the house.

I used to own health clubs and even still do partner in some, but I workout at home. The basics
Changeable Dumbbells up to 250lbs each. Heavy bench, abs ball for some ab work, chinning bar, weight vests, grippers (adjustable) rubber mats, concept 2 rower, a few sandbags, one 100lbs. the other 180lbs., concrete balls and a few odds and ends. We are lucky as we live on a farm and in the summer take the equipment outside to workout. I have a power rack in back (outdoors) and olympic set in a pit for clean and presses (thats where the sandbags and concrete balls are as well)

Now, why would I workout at home even when I owned clubs? Far better environment, no disturbances and no one asking questions all the time. Basically... privacy! LOL

The martial arts I study is also done outside of a dojo, usually outside but at homes when need be to.

Cheers

wow, you guy seem pretty old school whit your training equipment. I worked out what I needed and I made a list of the very basics, and then things that I wanted on top of that.

my basic list was, heavy bench with ajustable rack for squating, must be able to incline and decline - £500 (£1000)
Olimpic bar bell - £110 ($200)
set of dumbells and rack 4k, 6k, 8k, 10k - £40
set of olimpic dumbbells (so i can use same weights for bar and dumbbells) £30
Set of weights, with hand grips 2x2.5k, 2x5k, 2x10, 2x15, 4x20k = 145K =320lbs - £100
rubber drop matts £?
EZ bar - £40
A cable pully system that i'd prob have to make. - £30
chin up bar - would make at work £free

thats just the essential stuff which is £900 ($1800), and im sure I was skimping on the prices
