did i stump my growth

ok here's my problem i've been weight training for about 6 months and i stoped about a week ago i wanted to know did i stump my growth. i was about 5 foot tall when i started and now i'm 5'2 so am i stuck or will i grow some more please help thanks.

You were born in 1991, which makes you 13 (14 later this year). It has been shown in numerous studies that if you weight lift too early, you can damage the growth plates of your bones. This only really occurs if you do maximal lifting -- that is, if you lifted as much as you possibly could or did any kind of powerlifting.

It's fairly safe for someone your age to lift as long as the weight is moderate and doesn't load your bone structure to heavily. If you lifted weights that were as heavy as you could possibly lift, yes, you may have HURT your growth ("stunted" it) though it's unlikely that you've stopped it entirely.

Look on the bright side... shorter people have more strength-per-pound than tall people - so you'll still be able to hold your own in a fight.

At 13-14, you should be lifting for toning and indurance, not trying to gain mass. You're growing too quickly at that age to be able to put on much mass since your calories are going to be diverted to growing taller, increasing bone density, and pushing you through puberty.

Actually, lifting will not only "stump" your growth, it will also cause you to shrink in size. You've already set in motion a series of devastating events that will eventually cause you to lose 3-4 inches in height.

You'd probably be better of sticking to the Ab Lounge, Windsor Pilates, and Cortislim.

um..i dont know about all that genius.

and fil, you could be right. ive never read about what you said, ive only seen people on forums say it. but i have read in many places that weight lifting doesnt stump your growth. ( is it stunt? i always thought it was )

but where and what the hell are these growth plates?

Here's an orthopoedic website about growth plates and growth plate fractures:

It's not a uniquely weightlifting problem.

so what your saying is that i might have stumped my growth but i will still may grow a little. i pray that i make it to 5'8 that would be great because i have bad genetics (sorry about that spelling). i did lift heavey for i think a day and i did'ent even finish that workout to hard but i did check my max alot so did i hurt my growth right there? thanks for the help.

Robert13,
It hard to say if it will effect you or not. My brother and I both started weight lifting along with friends around your age and we are all now in the 5’7” to 6’3” height range. Everyone hits their growth spurts at their own time and the lifting you did IMO did nothing to hinder your growth but that is only based on my own experiences. My younger brother did not hit his growing spurt until 17 where he went from 5’3” to 5’10” over one summer. I hit mine at 14, and am now 5’11”. Your best bet is to look at your family and it will give you an idea of what height you may average. My mom is 5’2” may Dad is 6’3”.

Okay, that's enough of this. My post earlier was all sarcasm. This is a myth. Weight training will not alter your growth (except for muscle growth, that is).

Many bone experts (from what I've read on the topic) seem to disagree. Lifting too heavy, esp. "high impact" weight lifting (power cleans, etc.) can cause microfractures to the segments of the bone that elongate during growth. With the worse of these fragments, the bone will be prevented from growing, or growth will be impaired.

Lots of very tall athletes started weightlifting when they were young, and you can weightlift safely when you're young -- but be especially careful and work with someone who knows what they're doing.

malkore i know i can't put much on mass i just don't want to be lazy. see every since i started lifting my face got really skinny and my stomect like and girl's started looking at me for a change. so what your saying is keep it light with high reps is that ok. and i don't know how to look at my family to tell how tall i will be so help me out. my dad i think is 5'7 and my mom is like 4'11 then all my uncles are about 5'9 to 5'11 and my cusins are monsters there like 6'1 to 6'5 so what do you think i will be so thanks for the help you guys rock.

Both of your parents are a little short of the nat'l average but your already are at 5'2" and I'm guessing you having hit your growth spurt yet. I won't worry to much about it for now. Best thing you can do is to have a well rounded diet.

70% of your height is from your genetics and 30% is from nutreints, rest, etc.
I dont weight lifting will effect your height. if your worry about it before and after you lift weights, stretch and stretch good then after you hit the weights and stretched, start jump roping
