The Alcoholics Anonymous program says that the first step to curing an addiction is to convince yourself that you are completely helpless to control yourself and that only the intervention of some sort of invisible sky creature can help. The failure rate for AA is something like 99% so it's clear that this method is less than effective. After all if some sort of deity actually cared then it would not have let you get into this mess in the first place.

So your real first step is to acknowledge that you yourself are responsible for your actions and that you yourself can change them. Once you get past that step then study a bit about nutrition and starting eating healthy.

I wouldn't put it as bluntly as the person above, but I tend to agree. If you want to make a change in your life, you need to make a commitment to making a change. If you want to seek help from a higher power, that's your choice ... but you also need to take action yourself.

The first thing I'd suggest is registering for a free account on FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal or Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate and starting to log your food. This will let you see how many calories you're eating and how your nutrition levels are breaking down. Once you know that, you'll be able to see more clearly where you can make adjustments, cut back, change your nutrition, etc.

The next thing I'd suggest is checking out the various sticky posts in the exercise area of the forum (Weight Loss Through Exercise - Weight Loss Forum). There are some very good posts on exercise, both cardio/aerobic and on incorporating weight lifting into your exercise plans.

I'd also suggest starting a diary in the weight loss diary area (Weight Loss Diary - Weight Loss Forum) as well as reading and participating in other diaries. This is a good way to make updates to your progress and to get support from others. It helps to find the diaries of people who have successfully lost weight (or are losing weight) and reading through them as well. Following the diaries of those who have been successful is both inspiring and informative.

Finally, I'd say you should read as much as you can of the posts on the board, especially anything that's marked "sticky". There is a ton of good information around here and a lot of times questions that new folks have has already been answered very thoroughly - so do take the time to look around and read. :)

Hope that helps you to get started.

I know I am new to the forums here, but I feel like I need to say this. The "invisible sky creature" or "deity" you speak of gave us free will to make life choices on our own. We are accountable for our decisions in life and cannot rely in divine intervention to rescue us when we stray from the right path. I also believe that this site is to help people who are willing to help themselves, it is not a forum for religion and personal belief bashing.

I'm not trying to sound brash, but it seems very immature and ignorant to come into someones cry for help to tell them that God cannot help them, simply because you may not believe in Him.

I personaly believe that God can and will help those who help themselves, and He is as good a support system as any that can be offered by anyone else, this person just needs to be pointed in the right starting direction.

help those who help themselves,
I think that's the key. I guess I didn't feel much of a sense that the OP wanted to help herself ... there was no question about "what can I do" or "how do I do this" .. just "I give up my addiction to Jesus".

If she really is addicted to food, then seeing a doctor or a therapist would be a really good first step.

Agreed. I just felt I had to say something...

On a side note, I appreciated your post. I immediately went to fitday and signed up, hoping I can find out more of what I'm doing wrong with my intake. I'm sure if the TC truly needs help, she will find it here, and if she's willing to help herself, she will check out the links you posted...

Maybe the deity that the poster prayed to directed them towards computer forums.

I firmly believe that God helps those that help themselves. We need to take matters into our own hands. The information is readily (and freely) available - as are people who have been there, know what needs to be done and are willing to help. No money is required - other than the money that we would spend on groceries anyway. While such things as gym fees may help - they are not actually necessary.

Based on the statment given....we are not the ones to help you yet. You need to speak to a professional like a doctor.
