btw im 18 and my diet usually consists of oily bread and or rice

First of all, gaining that much weight so quickly could be linked to a medical condition, so that's worth looking into.

When faced with an entire overhaul of how you eat/live, people usually respond better to small, gradual changes that don't overwhelm them all at once. I like to recommend that you pick 3 things to change each week. That way, you focus on those things and use the "victories" each week to maintain motivation.
Try a few things like..
1. Cut out the diet sodas (they're full of garbage) and drink more water
2. Try some low impact cardio a few times a week (enough to be "working", but not hurting your knee)
3. If you don't eat fruits and veggies, start off by replacing 2 things a day with them.

Just remember that even the most fit, healthy people had to start somewhere. Choose a few things that you know you can do and commit to them, then add in a few more, and so on.

Also, I would like to comment about your post's title "Depression, fatness, sadness and more sadness"

Depression and weight gain can go hand in hand (trust me I know from personal experience - twice)

They feed on each other - gaining weight makes depression worse, and the more depressed you get the more weight people tend to gain, and back and forth.

If you feel that you may be suffering from clinical depression, I cannot recommend strongly enough that you seek help. I had gained 65 pounds while suffering from clinical depression. When I started getting better, I started being able to lose weight. As I lost weight, it helped my recovery from depression, basically reversing the cycle.

I'm so sorry that you're feeling bad about your weight. The posts above mine make good points that you might want to be checked for a medical condition and that depression can contribute to weight gain.

This is something that you CAN take control of. Trying to make a drastic lifestule change overnight would not be the best idea though. Set small goals for yourself, such as drinking an extra glass of water each day or replacing one serving of pasta with a serving of veggies. Focus on that one goal until you've met it and then start on another.

Please let me know if I can help you more. It sounds like you could use some regular motivation!

you know to be honest, i dont know what i would be depressed about? i mean for 2 years i kept a steady weight then all of a sudden this year all this happens. and im pretty sure its not a medical condition, because my weight fluctuates alot like that, i told my doctor about it, he said everythings normal.

i think my depression is in part due to my butt and thighs how would i get rid of those? any workout routine ideas any help and motivation i can get is appreciated because im tired of living like this
and im tired of being fat and sometimes having trouble getting outa ma car, i mean if you look at me you wouldnt say im fat, yoou would say damn he has a big butt ya know? but the thing is how do i know im depressed? because i dont know if im depressed for sure? you know, and as far as doing lihght cardio what would it be? i mean after surgery and a year after it my mile run was at 6 mins 46 seconds, and now im at like 14 it dropped alot, right after surgery it was 19 i worked alot in high school and got it to like 6 mins and now that im done with hs and in college i seem to have no physical activity. please i feel so sad.

thanks deschain and sarah, and muscle boy maybe i should replace all my meals with tuna and white bread? but i eat alot, i eat to the point where im full, like i can eat 2 feet of subway seafood sandwiches, i dont do it much maybe once a month, but you know i eat alot thats the thing.

I have depression and it sucks. What the above posters said about it and weight gain are certainly true.

Try eating smaller meals. Every 2-3 hours, SMALL meals. I heard once that if you take ur weight and multiply it by 12 that should give u ur daily caloric intake for losing weight. I know when I did it, it was off my only 60 cals. Anyway, if you do that and then divide that # by 5 or 6 (however many meals u will eat) that is how many cals u can have at ea meal. It's a pain at first, but once u start doing it, it will become second nature to you. IT has for me!

I used to drink a 2 liter of Diet Pepsi everyd day or so. omg...Bad bad bad. I started drinking sparkling water and that's all I drink now. I get my water in and I still thave the bubbles that can sometimes fool my body into thinking it's having soda. Now, I drink about 2 liters of water every day.

The only way you are going to reduce the fat from ur butt and thighs is fat loss. Get moving. Take the stairs. Join a gym if that's feasible. If not, take to the road and start running (although with a bad knee that might be difficult). You have to become active in order to achieve weight loss.

Best of luck to you!!!

A doctor will be able to help you understand better if you have depression. The thing about it is, it does not have to be related to anything specific that has happened, in fact, it often isn't. Clinical depression is linked to a chemical imbalance in the brain (usually serotonin). There are many meds available to help balance the levels if that is what your doc thinks is needed.

Also, exercise has been shown to help improve the levels of serotonin. Currently, I am breastfeeding so I can't take any meds unless I quit (some are thought to be safe but the long term effects on baby are unknown, so I'm not taking that chance). Therefore, I started to do things to actively help in my recovery other than taking meds. I started seeing a therapist, starting exercising, taking omega3fatty acids (thought to help serotonin levels, and healthy anyway), praying daily (prayer/meditation also shown to help depression), and some other stuff. My point in all this is, you have to take an active role in your mental health in order to get your physical health in line.

You cannot dictate where your body will burn fat, but burning calories as a whole will start to reduce fat. Start walking outdoors, the exercise will do you good, plus sunlight has also been shown to have a positive effect on the brain chemicals (no surprise there).

Wow. it's pretty horrible you feel that way. Particularly if the reason also involves you increasingly putting your health and what esteem you do have left in jeapordary!..

I understand your cultural eating regime. I several years in china and they similar things.

On your eating plan, If you're into sweet fluids, try to swap your pepsi for cold crip juices..like apple and orange and other mixtures. If you really want something fizzy, you can mix them with soda and it's good!..
Or that's stil not satisfying, you can try to trade some of your drinks for low and no fat flavoured milks. you can drink that stuff by the litre between meals!! and it'll keep you feeling not hungry so you eat less dUring your meals!:)
The thing with all that caffine in your pepsis, is not only does it dehydrate you, and make you retain fluid, meaning you look bigger ands cant eliminate waste properly, it also sends your metabolism into overdrive, but because you're not being nourished properly it think
it's starving and holds onto every ounce of fat it can get.

The thing with eastern eating , so high on flours and breads and rice and even noodles etc, where they're also really ioly, is that only way you can do that and not put on weight is to help it digest with cups and cups of hot water as you're eating. ..Even light non sweet teas will do the same thing. ..and help your body get rid of it!

AS for exercise, I don't think anyopne's suggesting you try to do a marathon workout, but if can muster up enugh desire to look and feel good, set an alarm and wake up earli,er each morning and go for a walk. Even if it's only a few kms but something you do everyday, then you 're starting your day off geared toward feeling good each and every time. ..and if for some reason you miss a day, then just get up the next day and take off from where you lefty off.

it only takes a human 30 days to make and break habits. Commit to feeling good and count it off on a calendar. By the end of the 30 days, you should forget that it was even a struggle or something that you used to not do.

if you get really excited after hat, you can go for a walk before dinner aswell. Nice way to wind up a day. Even at an easy relaxed pace, you 'll feel awesome for having doneit, and increasingly feel better after each time, because you are accomplishing something to improve yourself every single day. Feel good about what you've done and and it should help you to feel good about doing it the net time. One walk at a time, one days goal at time, every day til 30.
Go for it!;)

That's why I said outside oftimes when she( ?)'s eating flour and rice. As long as you seperate them, it's a damed site better than starving or grabbing something worse. I'm not Hitler here! A step forward is a step forward. Go easy.;).

cheers

obviously drinking milk by the litre is a drastic recommendation- however if drinken (drunk?) in reasonable quantities upping your milk in take can help you feel more full (well i guess its depends on the person but i've found so).

did your doctor recommend a diet/eating plan?

also what kind of protein intake do you get? i'm not sure what kind of meats you eat, but eating a high protein diet can make you feel more satisified and is helpful for many in fat loss.

good luck!

See your dr; he may want to check your thyroid.

Most of your calories should come from greens, fruits and grains. Limit the carbs to good ones like whole grains.

Keep us posted; good luck!

Even hyper of slow throid conditions can be corrected with dietary modifications.

AS for the milk, providing its no or low fat, I stand by my recommendation. I am 31, fml, and have never once in my life ( besides when I was pregnant ) gone over 48kgs and usually sit somewhere around 45. (and yes I am short. ) and I myself drink sometimes 2 lts of no fat milk every day! :D  ;) . I do this because of the no fat protein source ( protein being the thing in food that makes us full ) without having to eat all the time , and becaue of the potassium to fuel my heart pump during cardio, which I also alternate with orange juice for te same reasons.

I think you guys missed the part where the young lady asking is living at home with her family and subject to cultural eating style provided by (?) mum and dad, consisting mainly of rice, flour, breads, and hot, sweet and or oily veg, legumes, and meat combos.
What I'm saying to her about that though, is that even under those circumstances, there are still some things she can do to loose weight, feel better, have better health and not comprimise her family standing or have major issues about reorganising her own eating plan in mums kitchen upsetting the household.

Reeally small things she can do, but potentially things`that will make a huge difference for her. I am qualified and studied in nutrition and I also understand her cultural predicament and her family situation.

Anyway, the point is that we're all behind her and all agree there's stuff she can do.

cheers

I'd suggest seeing a medical professional in your area for some guidance/assistance. They should help you much more than an internet forum ever could. Please report back as you discover more info.

that is good advice stingo, however it is not so easy for some one to do so, it really depends on where she lives, and the financial situation...i hope for her sake that she might try this however, since that would really be the proper and personal suggestions to get in better shape.

How do you know if you have thyroid, i wasnt like this last year, i am drinkin slimfast right now. is it possible somebody can make a food routine for me, because i really dont know what to eat and my will power is so low, cuz im so fat. i would l ike to get skinny.

I have hypothyroidism, so I can answer that. I knew my thyroid was underactive when I started gaining weight, my face broke out, my hair was falling out, and I was freezing cold all the time. Here is a list of more symptoms.

Coarse and thinning hair.
Brittle nails.
Dry skin.
A yellowish tint to the skin.
Slow body movements and speech.
Inability to tolerate cold.
Feeling tired, sluggish, or weak.
Memory problems, depression, or difficulty concentrating.
Constipation.
Heavy or irregular menstrual periods that may last longer than 5 to 7 days.
Other, less common symptoms may include an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), modest weight gain, a hoarse voice, muscle aches and cramps, a puffy face, and swelling of the arms, hands, legs, and feet.
