Decreasing BF%

I'm 5'10" and 151 lbs., so that would put me at an "ideal" weight. However, I am in no way toned and recently found out that my body fat is 19%. How do I decrease this? Do I run and diet, and decrease overall weight? If so, would'nt that put me below my ideal weight.

Weight: 151 lbs.................../..................151 lbs.
BF%:.. x.19_____________/_____________-29 lbs.
Equals:.. 29 lbs....../....Lean Muscle Mass = 122 lbs.

So, that puts my lean muscle mass at 122 lbs., which then means that if I were to shoot for 10% body fat, I would have to weigh 135lbs. The problem is, weighing 135 pounds would make me very underweight.

My solution is to gain however many lbs. of muscle and then cut my weight until I'm to that 10%. Is this how it is done? Is decreasing body fat as simple as shedding weight?

Sorry, I did'nt realize that the forum was broken into male and female sections, I am a male.

In order to decrease your body fat percentage you have to cut your fat, not your weight. Weight composes of your total body including your muscles. You want to lose your fat and keep the strength of your muscles. Otherwise you will lose weight by catobolism which will make you lose weight but yet you will have more body fat %. To cut your body fat percentage you need to

- Just Eat Right
- Lots of cardio, Do High Intensity interval Training http://www.fitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10666
- Lift Weights (build muscle, and cut some fat)
*All the above will cut your fat , reducing your body fat percentage and increasing your metabolism to help out more.

Hope this helps.!

Not quite. Reducing your weight does not mean anything. In fact you may end up gaining weight BUT your body fat % will go down. Forget "Ideal Weight" calculations. They are just VERY general suggestions.

To decrease your body fat you have to eat often and workout regularly. I HIGHLY recommend you check out by Tom Venuto. It's awesome and is geared towards exactly what you are looking to do.
