Deadlifts back or legs?

After starting a proper leg routine with squats leg press and curls my legs have been really sore. I was going to do my back today and attempt some dead lifts for the first time but should i do them while my legs are still sore because they work both my legs and back don't they but if they mostly are a back exercise then ill do them.

Ther are different variations on deadlifts that will place the emphasis on the back or legs or whatever.

If this is your first time doing deads you shouldn't be doing any crazy weight, you should instead be getting the form down...So I would say, sure, do them.

different forms? well can you explain or show the proper form for placing more emphasis on the back ? i would rather do squats for legs and deadlifts mainly for back if i can help it

There are sumo, rdl, sdl just to name a couple. I think we had quite the discussion similar to this in another post and the general consensus that we all reached was that most people do deadlifts on their leg days however I and some others prefer to do them on the upper day or back day. Im always sore after a leg session and I dont have too many problems.

That'd actually be the standard deadlift. Which you want to look quite a lot like , minus all the plates, in your case, to start. He makes it look so easy. -_-

wow thats heeps for his size...seen huge fellas do like only half that. but dang that gym is nasty!!! everything is bright yellow...but yup thanks for the the linky and help but almost all people i see do it just like this :p

So you never do it with legs and mix it up between upper body workouts ?

But what? It's the answer to your question.

Must say I'm pretty impressed if that's the kind of lifting you see on a regular basis. I'm more accustomed to seeing clowns like .

I dont ever use deadlifts for my legs, its just a matter of preference really. I know alot of people that do but not me. Mainly because I can deadlift high weight and feel it all through my back before I feel it through my legs.

It works both. That's the weakness with body part splits, some lifts are very hard to place. That's why I don't like following slavishly a chest day, back day, leg day, etc, since some exercises will run over. You're just gonna have to figure out where you want to put it and where it's best for you.

So, on that first link by Focus, is that actually good form? I have been trying to work on my form and getting my hips lower, but looking at that, he lifts similar to what I was doing. (high hips) If you pause the video right before the weight comes off the ground his back is getting close to being parallel with the floor.

Deadlift (Hip Dominant exercise) should be done first before any lift during the session your doing it. It's an exercise that needs proper form all the way through and the muscles need no fatique or you are asking for injury. Deadlift works the lower back and the glutes. There are people that recommend doing the Deadlift once a week and not every session. Good form is a must for this exercise.

Afaik, Drex, that's real nice form. That's how I do them. Some people say you should get your hips lower, but then, what's the point of that? His back is already straight and good to go. Lower hips would just turn it into a reverse squat. Some people also say you should use dumbbells instead of a barbell for neutral grip. But once again, how is that any different from a squat?

you shouldn't have your hip as high as in an RDL (which is with back almost parallel to the floor) if you can pull more this way there's a bigger chanse that you'r form is wrong when you drop the hips and you need to correct something than that you're just stronger with the hips tha high.

The vid from that guy was shown from front though, it looked more like he was beding his upper back (which is ok) than having his back almost parallel to the floor.

A deadlift is all about just picking up the weight from the ground. Some people will have stronger quads and want to scoot a little lower. Some people have strong hams and back and will start with higher hips. Either way, just pick the bar off the ground in whatever fashion suits you best.

Smith, your leg workout looks quad and glute dominant. Deadlift variations like Straigh legged dl's, RDLS, etc, work the hamstrings more. Unless you really just don't want to do it, there's really no reason to not DL and squat on the same day. Just make one the emphasised exercise. Like if you want to bring your squat up, just go lighter on the DL or vice versa.

Also, I forgot to say, I don't know where you took geometry, but that looks a good 25 degrees off parallel to me. :p

I pulled out my protractor. It's roughly 24.65 degrees with an error of .03%.

Where's a nerd emote when you need one :D?

I don't know which of us is the bigger nerd, here. You for busting out the protractor, or me for making so accurate an estimation of something I saw yesterday. :beerchug:
