Deadlifting too much...

Well, I was deadlifting a week ago, when I lifted like more than I could 4 times. Well, that same night, I had a sharp pain on my spine, towards the left shoulder blade. It is in the upper back. Well, I did my back exercises again like 4 days later, then it came back and worse, because it went away a little. Then it went away again, only a little pain, and I did rows for my shoulders and it got terribly bad. So I have not worked out for 3 days, and At school, it was getting a little better, I bent over to go through a railing, and it got bad again. Well, how long, and what do you think is wrong with my back. The ICE patches are working good. My 1st time wearing it, have it on now. Do you think its okay to bench and squat, I dont think it is, so, i guess that was a dumb question, because I would have to lift weights, and if I lift anything now it hurts like a mofo. :( I really don't want to postpone all my working out, because I , just don't want to. I love weight lifting. It sucks. I am so depressed.

Mabye JPfitness can post here too to help me :) cuz im laying on a couch right now, when i could be working out......

first, i think deadlifting is sometimes really risky, leading to overworking the muscules, and in your case, its either you're really close or you already have tendinitis

*i know how you feel, we have the same mission*

Well, me and my father decided not to go becuase he said that it will just be a bunch of xrays, and if i can walk and its not killing me, to just let it heal. He had problems like this too. But it only hurts when i move my back. Or run.. So i need help from here. :)

It only hurts when you move your back! Dude, can you even move around without moving your back? I would say see a doc after a week, week and a half if its still hurting bad...

Is your dad a doctor? Dont go hillbilly heal style. No offense to you, but I know a lot of people who refuse to see the doctor and choose to let things heal. Even if it is xrays, at least you know from a professional that you're ok. Your back is not something to ignore, once its messed up, theres no coming back. Theres no point living in pain.

well..... Should I stretch or anything? And how many days should I wait after it stops hurting? please dont say go to the doctor, cuz im prob. not.

Check at your school to see if they have a certified athletic trainer. He shoudl be able to run you through some tests and give you some advice. Asking for injury rehab advice on a forum is not the smartest idea. So, you can either see someone in person qualified to treat you and get better or possible screw yourself up worse.

I just thought people on here would know if it is good to stretch a torn muscle. :) Sorry for the assumption.

There probably is, but they don't read every post. Convince your dad that you need to go to the doctor I'm sure if you fake enough pain he will take you.

Hey Elite. Sorry I didn't catch this earlier. How's the back doing today?

Sounds like a whopping soft tissue injury you got there. I would most certainly recommend laying off for a little while. Rest is essential.

Also try an anti-inflammatory for a few weeks. Alleve (naproxyn sodium) usually does the trick for me.

Stretching it does not sound like it would be effective. Perhaps doing some rolling on a foam roller, or better yet, a few sessions with a good sports massage therapist. That can really speed your recovery if you find a good one. Someone trained in ART (active release therapy) would be best if you have one in your area.

Bill Hartman is the best physical therapist/trainer/art practicioner in the business. If you're not near him, he can definitely guide you to finding someone in your area. Too bad your not coming to my fitness summit since he is my headliner this year, and he is offering his ART services for free for all the attendees.

well, its been one week, and its hurting a little, i think its because I did some good stretches all day today, well, im gonna take another week off. Is 2 good? Are ibeprofens good? They are 800mg. Thanks for the help.

Ibuprofen is fine. Both Aleve and Ibuprofen are NSAIDs which will decrease the inflammation and minimize pain. It has been over a week since your muscle strain so you should switch over to heat instead of ice to increase the blood flow to that area.

Also as JPfitness said. The foam rolling is great! After your strain heals you do not want to get adhesions in the muscle as this will limit your movement and lifting abilities indefinately. Try to maintain the flexibility of that muscle post-healing.

Feel better.

800 mg is the prescription dosage, and should help quite a bit. Take them about 3 times a day.

Give it a rest for now. And don't feel bad, even with all the training experience I have, I still screwed up on my deadlifts a few weeks ago and had back pain for a couple of weeks. Time off won't hurt you in the grand scheme of things.

On the contrary, you should make sure to take time off every 2-3 weeks to restore your body. You can do a restorative week of light training, but your CNS needs a break. I realize that is not what caused this problem for you, but it is something to keep in mind.

I think your probelm is you deadlifted too much weight or didn't keep your back straigth as you went down or up. Because the first time i deadlifted, I did it kinda wrong with my back a little bit curved and the next morning my back hurt. So i guess i am right. ta daa

For the 1st few months I was deadlifting I offen got a few twinges and pains. I just took a week or so till it went, lowered the weight and consentrated on my form.

I found that My form got lazy when I lifted sets of more than 6reps. So now I always stick to 4-5reps. and finish with a single set using half the weight and going half speed, just to work on form.
