Dead Lift Question

I see people doing dead lifts and it seems to be everything anyone ever told me about the WRONG way to lift something heavy (ie. lift with your legs not your back).

Can someone please explain to me (a) what muscle(s) a dead lift works, (b) whether it is safe and (c) what the propre form for not blowing out your back is?

TIA

huh how are they doing them?? your back should not come into play. i do them thay are the same way i lift my patients and my back is a okay and i have passed every single lift test i have ever done. and believe me they watch your back - its an automatic fail if you lift without proper mechanics. :s . so if you could eaplain wha it is they are doing that may help.??

aahh i see stiff legs. well its a great compound exercise as long as you do them right, use proper form. this is one of my fav's, it feels oh so good. i don't see what the problems is as far as mechanics go, the spine is straight and the movement is kept to the hip flexers so you don't stress out your back. i like it for the hams. think about the load you are lifting as far as regular lifting outside of the gym. i lift pt.s using my legs, from the ground up, i can't think of anything to compare this type of lift to, my brain isn't functioning at top prformance at the moment.

It's not likely as your only using your abs to stablise your body, its your back thats doing the work.
Your more likely to get a hernia with a back squat.

Straight leg deadlifts seem to help my back more than any exercise I've ever done. I think it is one of those things you never want to max out or go to exhaustion (because your back is constantly worked), but I think it's a great exercise.
