DCarr10760's Weight loss diary

Hahaha! I am a Yankee hater..lol. I'm from Michigan, so Tigers all the way, of course. And nothing made me happier then when the Tigers beat the Yankees in the playoffs last year when everyone and their dog thought that we would get our asses whupped. Nah nah:jump: Actually, I don't give a rat's ass about baseball, I just like to see the cocky Yankee bastards lose...lmao..:D Ooops! I guess I just got myself banned from your diary! lol:pumpkin:

Dont hate girl..you know they're an awesome team!

Another week, another 2 lbs! Yay!

So since July 16 I've lost 24lbs. About 7 weeks or 3.42 lbs per week on average. Not bad! 2 lbs a week is fine with me.

Last night the boy was grumpy, SWMBO was grumpy and I was grumpy! So instead of inviting trouble I went downstairs for some cardio! I did 24 minutes, level 5, random course on my lifecycle. It is ancient but has an interval training program which I did. Improved my mood considerably.

This AM I decided to add some interval training to my walk so I sprinted for 3 telephone poles and then walked or jogged until I caught my breath and repeated. I think I did 10 or 11 cycles (I lost track).

Previously my "interval" training consisted of walking with intervals of fast walking, and this was enough to leave me breathless. So I am definitely becoming fitter.

Valerie

I will be lifting weights, don't you worry. I am in a preliminary phase now. One thing that I have noticed is that my "core" (back in the day we called them "trunk muscles") are way out of shape.

My suspicion is that when we age and become less active, our core muscles become slack and this causes postural problems and sleeping problems (aches and pains). Along with this because of inactivity, connective tissue (tendons, ligaments etc.) become stiff and tight. This makes it less comfortable to exercise. So I believe that what many consider the inevitable signs of aging, are really the result to decades of comparative inactivity starting in your mid 30's (for most people) and going on in a gradual descent to old age and death. Toss in obesity to make matters worse and there you have many Americans, at least me.

My strategy, in the face of all of this is to begin strengthening my core. Reading Steve's posts and other luminaries about the web, I am working on squats primarily. But at the moment I am concentrating on flexibility through stretching. When I was your age I could bend over straight legged and rest my palms on the floor. Now I can just touch the floor with my fingertips.

So I am doing a lot of squatting just concentrating on my breathing and good form. Soon I'll add some resistance, but I am really afraid of injuring myself. Not that I am a wimp or crybaby, but if I get hurt, and cannot exercise for a time it is that much easier to fall down completely and lose much that I've sweated for.

I say that I'll start on my Birthday (October 7) it isn't an arbitrary date. We get our (fiscal) year-end bonus then, so I'll have some $$$ to build a home gym with. That gets me set up for the winter too, in case we have a bad one and it is hard to get out regularly to run.

Have a great day!

David C

Hey David,

Sorry I havn't been around.. I've been dealing with my family... certainly is not an easy task. I need a vacation after their vacation.

You're doing soo well. Your intervals are getting better and your shrinking like crazy. You are having amazing weight loss.

Its great to see your feeling better...keep up your great work!

~Jenna

Today is a rest day, I shoot for two a week. I was intending to rest on Sunday but worked out as a stress reliever.

SWMBO is totally stressed out because she is working with her supervisor today so she has been prepping for that since Friday. Makes her kinda preoccupied and grumpy. I've learned to just give her a wide berth. Do some extra with Davy etc. Tonight she'll be fine.

I'm a bit sore from the jogging and sprinting so later today I'll do some stretching and that's about it.

3 more workdays to vacation!!! Yay!! By then Hurricane Felix will have reformed and gathered strength over the Atlantic and will make landfall on the Jersey Shore, three houses away from my vacation house. So we will spend the week huddled in the basement!! Which is still better than going to work!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a great day all!!!

Never lose that. :D Anyways, congrats with the amount of weight you've lost so far. Sheesh.. 24 lbs already? Oh yah.. I feel a WLF National Guinness Chug in honor of your reaching your goal soon. haha! Also, wicked job with the interval training jogging!

Sheryl,

I can't wait! I miss Guinness more than any other food item that I am avoiding. Of course I might've had one or twelve as part of a business function, but only because it was socially appropriate!

Well, today wasn't my best day of eating, but I did manage to come in at 2600 calories, 100 cals over target, but not bad.

Today was a good day and tomorrow will be better. That is a good thought to bring to bed.

Gnite all!

David

Yesterday, I rested, today I walked. It wasn't torture...but it was work. I felt heavy and awkward like I wading through pudding with every step. Funny thing is, I've felt like this before after a day of rest. Particularly if I really pushed it prior.

My eating has been pretty consistent, I ate a couple hundred more calories yesterday than I typically do, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Weird, huh?

I wonder if one day of rest isn't really enough. That's why I walked today instead of jogging or interval training. We'll see how I feel tomorrow AM.

Now the last time I really lost a bunch of weight I was 42 (almost 5 years ago). I notice that this time things are different from that time and all others before.

For one thing, the weight loss is slower. After the first week or two of water loss I was averaging over 3 lbs a week. This time, just 2 lbs.

The other thing is energy level. Back then, after a month of exercising regularly, I felt great...full of energy, which bolstered the weight loss effort. This time I am tired, and sluggish much of the time, some days are better than others but in general I am pretty low on energy.

So what is going on? Is it my age? Did I get way more out of shape in the intervening four + years? Is my core weak? (it is)...Maybe it is just the cumulative effect of all of the above, coupled with being a middle-aged Dad.

I'm going on vacation next week and will (hopefully) have a chance to relax. I will take it easy, watch my eating and walk every day. With any luck I'll even get some frolicking in ;)

When I get back I think I'll take Valerie's advice and begin resistance training. I have to shake off the lethargy.

Have a good day all!

David C

Well tomorrow I am heading out to the Jersey Shore for vacation!

So I don't think I'll be on much (or at all depending on web access).

I'll also not be logging into FitDay, which I've been doing for that last couple of months. I will also not have access to a scale. So this is like a practice run at life. We'll see how I do on my own recognizance!

I'll be back in week or so, cheers everybody!

David C

Looks like I have time for one more post before heading out. I talked myself out of walking this AM, figuring I'd get some in on the beach later. But I got on the scale upon awakening and it said 240! if I leaned to one side it even flickered 239! So, I'm right on the edge of being the lowest weight I've been in about 5 years!

Steve suggested to Kimberly that she take a diet break, and I suppose that's what I am going to do this week. I'm not going to pig out on crap, just eat nearer to my maintenance level 2500 - 3000 instead of the 2000 - 2500 that I have been eating.

When I get back I think I will start weight training with the equipment I have, (5 - 50lb dumbbells and a utility bench) rather than waiting to buy new stuff (incline/decline bench w/power rack and universal set.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a week of playing with the Little Boy and SWMBO on the beach, hopefully it won't be too rainy, heck we'll bring a deck of cards and when the babe is napping we'll have to find a way to occupy ourselves (whinnney...snort) ;)

Have a nice week all, be good...and if you can't be good, be Nasty!!

David C

Hey David,

Have an awesome, fun, and nasty time at the shore:)

Congrats on your loss so far... you're soo close to the 230's maybe the scale will surprise you when you get home from vacation!

Have a great time :hug2:

We had a great time on Vacation!

The house we rented was beautiful, a gorgeous Gingerbread Victorian two houses from the Boardwalk in the center of Cape May. The weather was perfect, warm, not sweltering- just right. The Hurricane passed to the South so all we got was big surf, so the boogie boarding was great.

Davy had the time of his life, playing in the "big plash" (big splash = surf). He had no fear and would run right into the waves. I held him and let the waves crash into us and he'd laugh. It was really fun.

We brought SWMBO's parents so we had sitters, so we were able to go out to dinner and get some time alone.

It's good to be back though.

I did really well in terms of eating and exercising, I'll know the damage when I weigh in tomorrow, shouldn't be too bad.

Talk to you all soon!

Your vacation sounds wonderful!! Glad you had a great time. I wouldn't be too worried about the scales tomorrow.

Hi everybody!

Well I stepped on the scale this AM expecting a number between 239 and 242 and it said 248!

Now, there's no possible way I put on 8 lbs of fat. Same scale, same time of day etc., etc. So what happened?

My eating was well within my "maintenance range," my activity level was increased if anything as I did my daily walk in the morning plus a bunch of walking during the day as well as swimming and general frolicking in the surf. So I don't believe it had to do with diet or exercise.

The big difference? I forgot to pack my lisinopril HCTZ (Blood pressure meds) which is a "mild diuretic" my Doctor tells me. So could that account for a weight gain of 8 lbs, which is equivalent to a full gallon of water? I suppose so.

I have what's called "White coat hypertension" that is, put me in a Doctor's examinimg room with a cuff on my arm and my BP will rise to 160/100. ten minutes later it will be 140/90. When I get home it will be 125/80, the next morning it will be 120/70.

Everytime I go to a Doctor's office they get alarmed because it's so high, yet when they do bloodwork, it comes out fine, no evidence of the long-term damage that you might expect from continual high BP over a period of 35 years. I was inelligible for high school football in my Sophomore year because of it. That's how long it's been.

I recently had to change Docs because my old one retired and this new one put me on the Meds, despite my objection and after showing him my history. I reluctantly agreed and have been on the above Meds since last November.

I hate the fact that these meds could screw with my system so much that stopping could cause the retention of a gallon of water. Ironically, after 3 months on the meds when I went for my checkups, my BP wasn't affected (still was high and drifted down with subsequent readings). But my Doctor said stay on them anyway. He wanted to go to more agressive drugs, but I refused.

I have a lot of faith in the Human body. I believe that given adequate food, water, rest, exercise, love and freedom from crippling toxins and stress, that the body will fix itself from minor problems.

I know that my eating and lifestyle were the sole cause of my obesity. I know that my obesity and lack of activity contributed to or caused outright my hypertension. So I will no longer look to the medical community to manage my blood pressure. I will first make myself healthy, then (and only then) will I consent to meds if at 185 lbs, 12% body fat and a resting pulse of 50 bpm I still have HBP.

I also need to reduce the total amount of stress in my life. This vacation showed that to me.

If I am right about the water weight, it'll be off quickly as I will become stabilized. This will give me time to find a new Doc who'll be willing to take a wholistic, hands off approach.

It's good to be in control of me again!

Amen to that, brother! My father was the same way with high blood pressure going out of whack when he was in a Dr's office, but his blood work would be fine. His doctor did the same thing: placed him on meds, then realized he wanted to get a stronger medication. Unfortunately my father didn't say anything, because he just wanted his BP to get better. When his physician recommended having my father triple a certain medication, I told his physician "I don't think so, homeboy." (For some reason, physician's don't like being called "homeboy." HA! Like I care...) It's such a pain in the ass to have to become dependent on a drug. Breaks my heart seeing my father doing just that. :(

I just wanted to welcome you back and I'm glad you and the family enjoyed your vacation. You'll get rid of all that water retention, so not frett, doll.. :hug2:

-Sheryl

Welcome back from your vacation... it sounded really wonderful and relaxing. Some of my best memories growing up were going to the ocean with my daddy... although... usually it was in the middle of a huge store admiring the lightening and the churning of the ocean but its wonderful!

Dont' listen to that doc pressuring you to take stronger meds... Doctors really seem to push meds and procedures... and from personal experience they can totally go overboard! You're body and weight will work itself out and be back down before you know it =0)

Thanks Sheryl and Jenna for stopping by and for your encouragement!

I lost a couple of pounds yesterday and this AM was 246, confirming my suspicion that the gain was largely water.

I personally think that most of the fluctuation people see is water. Hydration and how it works is interesting to me, I'd like to do some more research on it. So I will.

Today is a rest day, I have been feeling a bit tired and heavy. I've been going to bed at 9:30 - 10:00 for a couple of weeks now, but am still really tired a lot. I would think I was overtraining or had low blood sugar if I didn't know better.

My friend's test for West Nile Virus came back negative, BTW, so that seems to rule that out (for him at least). All I can think of is that the medication I was on was screwing with me and that once it is flushed from my system, I will feel better. Until then I will carry- on.

I did some searching for Naturopathic or Holistic Practicioners, even Alternative Medicine Physicians, but what I found were just hippy-type, new-agey health practicioners. Now there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm just not really into it.

What I am looking for is an MD more into the promotion of good health rather than the managing of chronic disease state. But there doesn't seem to be a named branch of medicine for that. I'm certain that there are people out there who are like that (my old Doc, (who retired) was one. But how do you find one?

Anywho, I'm rambling. Have a good day all!

David C

Hey David,

I'm glad you saw that 246! Hydration is really really interesting. Lemme know how the research goes.

Its great that the west nile test came back negative. Must have been a huge relief.

As for a doctor.. have you looked into chiropractor type offices. Some are really good like that. Some are exactly what you have described. Its hard to find a great doctor that isn't all pushy with the meds and considers other options. My cats vet is like that and that's the reason I chose him... more doctors should definitly be like that. It would be beneficial to people.

Hey doll,

I'm glad that the water retention is slowly seeping out of your body. However, I hope you start feeling better with the tiredness and whatnot. As for Holistic Practitioners, try checking out I used to be involved in biomedical research at the Uni and part of my research dealt with alternative medicines. (Mainly Hawaiian alternative meds) I was given this site from a few colleagues for research purposes. You can check it out to see if it might be of help.

-Sheryl

PS I'm so happy your friend tested negative. Yikes.

You might want to look at an Osteopath - not 100 percent of what you're looking but might be closer and sicne many of them can't prescribe medication - they focus more on the body... and getting the body to fix itself.
