David1965's Diary, Chapter 1 (I'm new)

Hello everyone, this is my first posting,

My name is David, I'm 40, I live in San Francisco and for most of my life I have been overweight. Looking back at school pictures it seems like age 10 was when I started to pick up the weight. With the exception of a couple times in my life where I was thinner I have always had the extra lb's to carry around.

Fast forward to October 2004, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes which in one way was a big relief to put a name to the very strange syptoms I was having; frequent urination, severe thirst. My cholesterol was high as well as my blood pressure so I was put on meds to help bring those down to a healthier range in addition to the meds for my diabetes. At the time of my diagnosis I weighed 262 lbs, 5'10", about a 44" waist and 29" length. My body when overweight tends to get the "Big Belly Syndrome" enough said.

December 2006 I was celebrating Christmas with my family and had a few pictures taken of me and my family. When I saw the picture of myself shortly after I just didn't like what I saw, I remember telling my youngest brother who weighed the same as I did, that I was going to do something about this. I was 40 years old, severely overweight, by most weight tables I was obese (how'd that happen?) Diabetic, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. What's 50 going to be like?

I've been on enough diets and joined enough gyms to know I needed to do an activity I enjoyed;that was walking. Fortunately, I live in a beautiful, pedestrian friendly city that has lots of challenging hills; San Francisco.

I started off slowly, got winded quickly but persevered eventually building up my distance to 3-5miles daily. I also knew that I needed to do something about my diet but I couldn't do anything crazy like starve myself or omit a certain type of food from my diet because I'm a diabetic so I decided to watch my portion control. I decided to divide everything I ate in half and when/if I became hungry in between meals I had a piece of fruit. I also got into the habit of drinking a large glass of water first thing in the morning and about 8 large glasses throughout the day, especially before each meal. Oh yeah, more roughage with the diet, salads with lunch and dinner, piece of fruit with breakfast.

The weight started to come off, at first I'd think I saw my face looking thinner but it was confirmed when my friends started to comment on how I was looking, "Hey, did you get a haircut or something?". Next positive sign was my pants were fitting more loosely.

I won't bore you with my monthly progress but I will say I'm happy to have found this site, I've been looking for a place to share my progress with others who are going through the same thing.

To date I have gone from a 44waist to 36, I have gone from 262lbs to 208lbs, I am currently going to a gym and working out daily and swimming laps for 30 minutes nightly. I seem to have hit a plateau for awhile; I was stuck at 210lb for over a month but just this week lost another two lbs. My current goal is to get out of the 200's and into 100's (199, here I come!)and to get into a pair of 34" jeans that I purchased in January 2006, I call them "MY GOAL JEANS".

Oh, my diabetes is under control, my doctors can't believe what I have done (smile) and I am no longer on BP and Cholesterol meds, wooo hooo!

Ideally, I would like to find other like minded men/women on here to chat with, give/get advice and basically be helpful. I know how difficult this is because I am going through it myself.

I think that's enough of Chapter 1, thankyou for listening and please feel free to say hello.

Weight Loss Tv Shows, are you addicted?

I'm curious, is anyone else out there addicted to weight loss TV shows like "The Biggest Loser" or "Celebrity Fit Club"? Now "Queer Eye for the Strait Guy" is getting in on this too.

I really enjoy watching the progress of these people and admire them for being brave enough to strip down to a bathing suit on National TV. I will admit they have inspired me to move forward with my weight loss plan.

I am getting ready for my morning workout with my workout buddy, we encourage each other to do more especially when the weight we are trying to lift is challenging. I spend about two hours at the gym every morning always starting with stretching (so important to avoid any injury) then 20-30 minutes of cardio and then weights both free weights and machines alternating arms, chest, legs, shoulders so I don't work out any body part more than two days in a row. I always treat myself to a steam/sauna afterwards just to relax the muscles. I just joined my gym two months ago and already I'm amazed at the change in my body. At first it was just little things like tiny definition on the arms but now my biceps have grown from 13" to 14", stomach is definitely going down (from all those crunches) and my chest is building up. My legs are well defined from all the walking I have done since I started my weight loss plan in January. Believe it or not, I'm actually looking forward to going on a cruise and wearing a swim suit next month; I have always avoided the pool even though I love to swim.

Hang in there everyone!

Hi David!
Nice to meet you and welcome to the family. I am soo addicted to Celebrity Fit Club! I admire their courage...I wouldn't have been willing to go on national television and publicize my weight. So, hats off to them and to you and all of us as well! Keep up the good work!

Hi David - I'm not into those shows, but then I don't watch TV - I have it, but when you turn it on, all you get is Blue Screen ;) I don't even have basic cable!

We do netflix and watch movies, but not often.

I did a stint of house sitting a couple of weeks ago - and I was like a drug addict! I had the TV on in every room I was in! I was absolutely amazed to find FIT-TV a whole channel devoted to fitness! Who would have thought ;)

I even did the Belly Dancing Work out!

That said, I'm still not compelled to call up the local cable company and go through THAT again! (We used to have digital cable, all the channels, and the only thing that got watched regularly was Scooby Doo) ;)

It sounds like your exercise routine is fabulous!! Good for you for taking such control in your life!

I too woke up one morning in '06 and realized I was 40 and almost 260, so I can completely relate to the shock of thinking 'what's it going to be like when I'm 50???'

What a motivator we both had!

Welcome to the forum!!!!!!!*Hugs*

Congrats so far on your progress. YAY!!!!!! You are doing such an amazing job. I just love SF wheather. Always t-shirt wheather. I am from San Jose,C.A. but now I live in Texas, way different. Wheather that is.:D

Thanks for making me feel welcome.

To all who have responded, THANKYOU for making me feel like I found my cyber home!
My "wakeup" call came when I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I wanted to find a group that I could chat with, ask for advice, give advice with folks that are in a similar situation. I joined the American Diabetes Association and tried to meet others through their website; just didn't happen, not sure why.
Then I started to work out so I thought wouldn't it be great to meet others who are beginning to exercise, maybe are even diabetic who I can chat with? Joined another online group, still didn't happen, not sure why.
Then I found this place, by chance really, just popped into my head, "Do a google search for weight loss forums" and here you guys are.

I hope this is the beginning of a fun but educational relationship, please continue to say hello when you see me out there.

Take care,

David

i'm glad you decided on that google string ... :D we're very happy to make this a nice home for ya... we don't bite... well unless you ask us nicely anyhow.. :D

Diabetes is some bad stuff take care of yourself. I have been lucky so far and hopefully ill get this weight off before it takes hold. My mother in law has it and doesn't really watch what she eats and we aren't expecting good things for her. I found this group the same way except it was mamma instead of google lol. welcome again.........

Hi David just dropping in to say well done on your progress so far. Yes I would have to say im pretty much addicted to all the weight loss shows. Hope your having an excellent week.

Diabetes.

Again, thanks for the well wishes, Diabetes is certainly something you don't want to play with because it will catch up to you if you don't take care of yourself. My mother was just diagnosed with Type2 Diabetes about a month ago, I was shocked because up until then I assumed it ran on my father's side only; I am helping her deal with this, teaching her the wonderful world of carbs, how to use the glucometer, I call her almost daily now to see what she has eaten, encourage her to walk/exercise. She's starting to do a good job.

Another milestone for me!

Went to Costco yesterday afternoon to buy some groceries (Any Costco addicts in here?) I always swing through the clothes section and just happened to see some dress slacks for a great price. Now, let me just say that before when I was at 262lbs or lets just say for mosts of my life I have always had to buy pants based on my waist size then have the length taken in. As a child I had to shop in the "Husky" boys section.
Yesterday, I found two pair of slack with a 36" waist and 29" length (there is a God!). You have no idea how excited I got over this, it makes all the hard work worth it. Just wanted to share this with everyone. One more thing, got on the scale this morning and dropped one more lb, down to 207lbs now.

Keep up the great work everyone!
