Hello everyone, this is my first posting,
My name is David, I'm 40, I live in San Francisco and for most of my life I have been overweight. Looking back at school pictures it seems like age 10 was when I started to pick up the weight. With the exception of a couple times in my life where I was thinner I have always had the extra lb's to carry around.
Fast forward to October 2004, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes which in one way was a big relief to put a name to the very strange syptoms I was having; frequent urination, severe thirst. My cholesterol was high as well as my blood pressure so I was put on meds to help bring those down to a healthier range in addition to the meds for my diabetes. At the time of my diagnosis I weighed 262 lbs, 5'10", about a 44" waist and 29" length. My body when overweight tends to get the "Big Belly Syndrome" enough said.
December 2006 I was celebrating Christmas with my family and had a few pictures taken of me and my family. When I saw the picture of myself shortly after I just didn't like what I saw, I remember telling my youngest brother who weighed the same as I did, that I was going to do something about this. I was 40 years old, severely overweight, by most weight tables I was obese (how'd that happen?) Diabetic, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. What's 50 going to be like?
I've been on enough diets and joined enough gyms to know I needed to do an activity I enjoyed;that was walking. Fortunately, I live in a beautiful, pedestrian friendly city that has lots of challenging hills; San Francisco.
I started off slowly, got winded quickly but persevered eventually building up my distance to 3-5miles daily. I also knew that I needed to do something about my diet but I couldn't do anything crazy like starve myself or omit a certain type of food from my diet because I'm a diabetic so I decided to watch my portion control. I decided to divide everything I ate in half and when/if I became hungry in between meals I had a piece of fruit. I also got into the habit of drinking a large glass of water first thing in the morning and about 8 large glasses throughout the day, especially before each meal. Oh yeah, more roughage with the diet, salads with lunch and dinner, piece of fruit with breakfast.
The weight started to come off, at first I'd think I saw my face looking thinner but it was confirmed when my friends started to comment on how I was looking, "Hey, did you get a haircut or something?". Next positive sign was my pants were fitting more loosely.
I won't bore you with my monthly progress but I will say I'm happy to have found this site, I've been looking for a place to share my progress with others who are going through the same thing.
To date I have gone from a 44waist to 36, I have gone from 262lbs to 208lbs, I am currently going to a gym and working out daily and swimming laps for 30 minutes nightly. I seem to have hit a plateau for awhile; I was stuck at 210lb for over a month but just this week lost another two lbs. My current goal is to get out of the 200's and into 100's (199, here I come!)and to get into a pair of 34" jeans that I purchased in January 2006, I call them "MY GOAL JEANS".
Oh, my diabetes is under control, my doctors can't believe what I have done (smile) and I am no longer on BP and Cholesterol meds, wooo hooo!
Ideally, I would like to find other like minded men/women on here to chat with, give/get advice and basically be helpful. I know how difficult this is because I am going through it myself.
I think that's enough of Chapter 1, thankyou for listening and please feel free to say hello.
