Dad makin me quit lifting :-(

I had a great time doing it in my year and a half of training. Unfortunatley, my dad orders that I stop because he says my upper body is too bulky for soccer and it slows me down, and he says if im not lifting for a sport then I'm a moron because morons only lift to weight train. I know, its bull**** but i dont make the decisions.

I'd like to talk to your dad, since evidently I'm a moron.

Get him to buy you this book - The Ultimate Guide To Weight Training For Soccer by Robert G Price.

Ive not read it, so I dont know whats its like, but it doesnt matter, just get him to buy you the book, and tell him that you are following it. But really your just doing your own thing.

Yes...all those women should quit lifting weights to combat problems like osteoporosis. Have you tried writing him an essay on the benefits of weight training or presenting your side in a point by point, well thought out argument?

If nothing else, there's always bodyweight workouts until you hit 16, can get a job, and buy some weights or join a gym.

Also, have you timed yourself on a 40 or 100 yards?
You can always join another sport

I run a 1.10 400 m... i use to be able to do a 56 sec 400 m.

body weight exerices are awsum, if all else fails, he cant stop you from doing push ups, sit ups, pull ups, etc. my friend is ripped and thats all he does.

You get ripped from diet, you cant put on any real size from body weight.
And if you stopped weight training, even with body weight you would loose a lot of your mass.

Man that's gotta suck. Well, unless if you're gonna be a pro than what's ya dad worried about? And besides, not ALL soccer players have a slim build. Just look at someone like Julio Baptista! Seriously, if i were you i would be doing EVERYTHING i possibly can to convince him that it's a good idea to continue lifting.

why not just tell him you can make a routine for sports, like Cynic suggested.
And like Mreik said, do some pylos.

Out of curiousity, does your dad expect you to lay off strength training for a year and then start all over again when soccer season starts again? That'd be a horrible waste of time.

One point-you should've decreased your time since you've gained muscle rather than increasing like you did.

Tell your dad Zidane lifts weights 5 times a week when he trained for soccer season and he's the greatest French soccer player of all time.

There's no reason for you to quit lifting dude. All the professionals in europe now do weight training 12 months a year. their normal training, which is a shed load of HIIT and diet means they don't get "bulky".

All you need to do is adjust your diet and you won't bulk. You'd be at a disadvantage if you stop weight training. Weight training helps prevent injuries, improves you core strength, improves balance, improves coordination, helps with explosiveness over the first few yards which makes you quicker to the ball or helps you jump above an opponent to win a header. The benefits are endless.

it depends how big you are getting, your dad could have a point, wayne rooney is a big strong lad and most if not all footballers nowadays do weights.
but you dont see many 16stone guys running round the pitch its just to much weight to carry for 90mins.
tell him you are focusing more on legs but want to carry on doing upperbody but maybe not using as much weight (more circuit type)
footballers are a lot bigger and fitter than they were a few years ago.

So wait...how old are you again? 15, 16?

do you love soccer, or just enjoy it, but your dad forces you to play?

i'm not a fan of parents living vicariously through their damn kids. if you are 16, then its time to tell dad to 'get bent' and start making your own decisions.

This does present a problem if said teenager is living in said parents house and subject to said parent's rules.

Can't you take weightlifting as a class at school?

Lower your volume and increase your strength. Many altheltes stay the same weight but still weight train to get stronger.
