cross trainer vs running

can someone tell me the benefits of the cross trainer? i have been a runner for years and have been told l need to give it up as my back cant take the impact anymore. i have started using the cross trainer at my gym and am worried that i will put on weight from not being able to run...so far (its been 2 weeks) the cross trainer seems to be working in fact i can see definition in my arms and abs which l habe not had before...l just want to make sure this is a good cardio weight loss activity...

Dude, if it's working for you, what else do you need?

If you're losing weight, getting your heart rate up, it's not hurting your back, and it's approved by your doctor, I don't see the problem?

Its supposed to be a really good low impact cardio machine. But, it does burn less calories on average than running. Play with the resistance levels a bit. If you do start gaining weight work a bit harder for a bit longer. It should be ok. :)
