Cravings

In your experience, does healthy eating and consistent excercise over time end up diminishing your cravings for all that bad stuff we love...you know, cravings for crunchy, salty snacks, or chocolatey stuff or pastries or ice cream - you get the point.

I mean with a healthy diet of whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and veggies etc...not cutting out certain things like sugar completely....

I'm sorry if I end up asking a lot of questions over the next few weeks, I'm just ecstatic to have found a group like this with so many experienced people willing to support and help out :D

I've found it will greatly dimish cravings but I believe they are just a part of life. They will never go away completely. Sometimes there is just no substiture for a mars bar :p

That's OK though cause the trick is learning to control those cravings. Here's 2 things that really helped me.

When I crave something I do 2 things drink a big glass of water and brush my teeth with a super minty toothpaste. Then I wait about 20 minutes or so. A lot of the time the craving goes away and I'm good for a few more days.

However if the craving remains I do not try to substitute other foods. If you are craving chocolate eating 20 other things to try and fill the void most likely won't do it and the next thing you know you've eaten as many calories as if you'd just gone ahead and had a reasonable chocolate treat.

When you are consistent things get easier but they don't get easy. :(

Good Luck :)

I think the best thing to do is to distract yourself with something else
play a game
take a bike ride
do some kind of sport
even have a nap

i find that substituting for something else works most of the times
instead of having a chocolate bar rich in calories have one with fewer
but STOP AT ONE BAR *warning*

hehe i'm already out of toothpaste and my brush is worn out:rolleyes:
if all the above dont work i suggest shooting yourself in the leg
the trip to the ER and the bloodloss will make you totally forget about the craving
not to mention the pain
oh the pain

keep on working

I think some cravings are just part of life. But...some are our body's way of telling us what is going on inside. For example, most people who crave sugar/carbs have a problem with yeast/candida overgrowth in their body. This candida thrives off of sugar, so the more you eat sugar, the more you are actually feeding the candida. A lot of people find that once they go through a cleansing program (which helps get rid of the yeast), they no longer crave sweets/carbs as much.
The same goes with other foods. If your body isn't getting all the nutrition it needs, it will send a signal to your brain to tell you that you are hungry which also leads to our cravings. If you eat all the minerals, enzymes, good bacteria, vitamins, etc. that your body needs and cleanse your body of toxins/impurities, then you will have much better success with cravings/hunger.
I have just been on a cleansing program for 3 1/2 weeks, and already I am seeing these benefits. I use to crave sweets ALL the time and could not go longer than 3-4 hours without eating. But, I have had great results with this program and have lost 11 pounds! Yeah!!!

Cravings.... ahh.. yummy. I use to crave alot of chocolate.. but I haven't for a while. But right before my period I seem to need it. However, I have found that pitted prunes have an awesome sweetness that takes away my craving for sweets. Water also works wonderful... but my secret is generally gum. I use it to curb both my cravings and my desire to eat eat eat... sometimes just having gum in my mouth allows me to resist snacking! Best thing ever. :)

One thing that has helped me a lot in the past is combining some crunchy, fiber-y (did I just make up a word?) vegetable with drinking a lot of water. That keeps me full for a while and the craving usually goes away.

I don't like chocolate so I can't say for certain that this would work... but things I've read on the subject say instead of substituting a lesser quality stuff have the good stuff - just less of it... Love chocolate? Great - have some but don't hoover a 16 ounce bar... have a hershey's kiss... (or whatever a good chocolate is..)

Salty is my weakness and that's what i crave.. same line of thought there don't buy the 16 ounce bag of chips, they'll just get eaten get the small packages and satisfy the craving... that and icecream...

Generally you only need a little bit to satisfy the craving... but we shoot ourselves in the foot because the entire bag is still there, calling our names. But if you get smaller packs, you don't get the temptation to eat the entire bag... Portion control I think is the buzzword.
