Cory's Quest for a Healthier Life

The best part is when left hand driver indoctrinated walkers step off the curb at intersections while looking in the wrong direction for cars. Oh, maybe not the best part. When I was growing up, there were fewer one ways in town so you always watched to the left for immediate traffic when stepping out. Left hand drive pedestrians tend to keep to the right side of the sidewalk and it's interesting to encounter mall and sidewalk pedestrian traffic that seems to follow right hand drive patterns. I loved watching foreigners in with rental cars in roundabouts. Metric speed limits are great fun for Americans too, until they look at their speedometers.

There's no better education than travel. It's the best way to open your eyes and shatter ingrained thought patterns.

Jenni: Unless I have a man at that time, I'll probably go by myself.
Hale: I'm excited to even think about doing this. My family and I used to travel a lot, but we had to stop when my grandmother moved in with us.
Sunny: We primarily hung around London and Edinburgh, with a detour to Stonehenge. I haven't decided where I want to spend my time yet, but I'll probably avoid those places since I've already seen at least some of them. Do you have any recommendations?

It was a very weird, busy weekend. Friday I was at about 2,000 calories, Saturday was about 1700, and yesterday was around 2500. I didn't have power for most of the weekend, hence the higher calorie counts. I was unable to prepare or even heat up food. We had a terrible storm with gusts of 70 mph. Trees were down all over the place and knocking out power lines across a good bit of my state. I had to rely on restaurant food a lot more than I wanted to, but I did try to make at least some reasonable choices. Saturday was very productive though. I spent my daylight hours cleaning and trying to unpack the last few boxes and I can now happily say that I have a functional kitchen. Meal prep should be so much easier now and I'm hoping I'll be less tempted to eat out. Sunday was just fun. I met up with a friend and we checked out this dance studio. The class we took kicked the crap out of me. I'm not sure if it was just that hard, or if I'm out of shape, or if I'm still trying to get over my illness. Probably a combination of the three. Then we met up with my brother and his girlfriend for lunch and a coffee. After that, she took me to the build site of her soon to be home and showed walked me through the model that her house will be built to. It's one of those planned neighborhoods. I have to be honest, it's kind of my idea of a nightmare, but it will be so perfect for her and her family. I'm so excited to see it done just because of how happy it will make her. Then she came back to my house because she hadn't seen it yet. It was just a good day.

Yesterday also made 35 days soda free.

This year´s flu season is rough. The main strain is of a different type than most people currently alive got imprinted on. Or something. Which seems to make the immune response less efficient. So I wouldn´t be surprised if that feeling of weakness is an after-effect of being ill.

Q: Glad to see you back!
Lama: It's no joke this year. A coworker told me yesterday that someone in their department (I've never met them) is in the intensive care unit and has been for the last three week. Apparently she got the flu, it turned into pneumonia, then it turned into sepsis. She's been in a coma for a week and they don't think she'll make it. It's awful.
Cate: I'm getting a little better every day. It just feels so slooowwww.

Yesterday was good. I did not go to hip hop because I'm trying to save my still somewhat limited energy for my favorite dance instructor tonight and hopefully lifting on Wednesday. I did get 10,000 steps in though. That seemed like a good compromise since walking is low impact. I also did well with food.

Breakfast: corn flakes and cashew milk - 225 calories
Lunch: Roast beef, potato wedges, and broccoli - 823 calories
Dinner: Refried bean enchiladas - 627 calories
Total: 1779 calories

4000 US-ians died of flu and (resulting) pneumonia in a single week in early February. So... yeah, it´s serious.

Glad to see you are taking good care of yourself, Cory, & not pushing yourself too much just yet. I must check out when the best time is to get this year's flu jab.

Yesterday was good. I did my 10,000 steps and two dance classes. And my favorite instructor (I'll call him M from now on) yelled at me again, so that's encouraging. I won't say that I'm feeling completely back to normal, but I could at least get through the class without feeling like I might die. Food was also reasonable too.

Breakfast: bagel with cream cheese, grapes - 567 calories
Lunch: fajita pizza - 610 calories
Dinner: spaghetti with meat sauce - 758 calories
Snack: tiny sliver of cake - 132 calories
Total: 2067 calories

Exercise:
2 hours dance fitness
10,000 steps

I'm noticing that I'm not eating as healthy as I used to. The food I'm eating is necessarily BAD per se, but I have definitely shifted more towards carb heavy meals over the lean proteins, with a side of starch, and heavy on the veggies that I had been doing. A lot of that was about ease of preparation when I got so busy. But I'm done moving and I should probably try to get back in the habit of lessening the carbs and increasing the protein intake, especially given both my PCOS and the exercise that I do.

Lama: Definitely feeling better!
Q: It's a good thing when M yells at you. He's pretty good at judging where you're at and if he's yelling, it means he thinks you can do more.
________________

Owwwwwww. That about sums up how I feel this morning. I went back to weight lift for the first time since January 31st yesterday. I'm kind of ashamed to admit that, but 2 weeks of that time was spent doing stuff for moving and 3 weeks was being sick/recovering so I guess it's a legitimate reason. Still annoyed with myself. Let me tell you something: it felt god awful. You're body starts to forget the mechanics of the movements, even in such a relatively short time and it can take a couple sessions to get back in the swing of things. I asked my brother to spot me at 135 lbs on my squat. What the fuck. 6 months ago, that was a weight that I could probably do 8-10 reps on, no problem. Bad Cory. Food was alright.

Breakfast: Greek yogurt, half a scoop protein powder, grapes - 488 calories
Lunch: Salmon patty sandwich, carrots, pickles - 555 calories
Dinner: bean enchiladas - 702 calories
Total: 1745 calories

Exercise:
Squats:
105 lbs 1x5
120 lbs 1x5
135 lbs 1x5

Bench:
60 lbs 1x5
70 lbs 1x5
80 lbs 1x6

Lat Pull Downs:
75 lbs 3x10

45 degree Hyper:
BW 3x10

Ab Bench:
25 lbs 3x15

The strength will rebound quickly. Don't rush it, because that's a good way to get injured. Ask me how I know.

A month away is not so bad, muscle memory kicks in and you regain that strength pretty quick :)

Thanks guys. Trying not to be too discouraged.

Yesterday was good. Food was within my calories and I went to zumba. Not to M's class, but to another guy (H). H's class isn't as hard, but he is probably the instructor I'm more likely to recommend to most people I know. M is great if you have some zumba/dance experience and are already kind of in shape. Otherwise his class can be kind of...inaccessible because some of his choreo is hard to modify if you have mobility issues or just aren't there yet in your fitness level. H is good because it's easy to take his stuff up a level or down a level, depending.

I wound up driving to my parents' house last night (had originally planned to make the drive this evening) and took the grapes with me. I've been bad about stopping at a gas station and getting some peanut butter m&ms to help stave off the boredom of the drive. I hadn't intended to eat those 200 or so calories when I started the day, but I'd rather do 200 calories of grapes instead of 700 calories in candy.

Breakfast: cornflakes and clementines - 300 calories
Lunch: egg salad sandwich, carrots, pickles - 555 calories
Dinner: spaghetti with meat sauce - 758 calories
Snack: grapes - 208 calories
Total: 1813 calories

Exercise:
1 hour dance fitness
10,000 steps

Grapes are DEFINITELY the better option.
